Ion hits vs. Iden Versio

By heychadwick, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi,

I had a 2.0 game tonight when an Ion Cannon got 2 hits against Iden Versio. She used her ability. What happens?

It comes down to timing. When does the dice turn into Ion Tokens and when does Iden Versio negate all damage?

Does Iden negate all hits/crits before they convert to Ion Tokens? Or do they convert to Ion Tokens before Iden negates all damage?

In this situation, there is either zero damage and zero Ion Tokens.....or zero damage and one Ion Token.

She gets an ion and I don't think timing actually matters on this at all. Iden's text is this:

"Before a friendly TIE/In fighter at range 0-1 would suffer one or more damage, you may spend 1 charge . If you do, prevent that damage"

Her ability says "prevent that damage" it doesn't say anything about canceling dice and those are two different things. So 2 hits from the Ion cannon does one damage (which she can prevent) and then 1 ion which her ability has no interaction with.

Ion attacks trigger on an attack hitting, which is the final part of the Neutralise Results step.

Iden triggers on 'would suffer damage' which is part of the Deal Damage step that comes after Neutralise Results.

I think the logical assumption is that the spending dice part of the ion attack happens either as the last part of Neutralise Results or the first part of Deal Damage, depending on what exactly your read on 'if this attack hits' means. With ion, you spend all of your results (even the hit for damage, if you read the card again) before the target suffers damage, and one of the effects of that is that the first hit spent then causes the target to suffer damage. The others are spent to inflict ion tokens.

With no outstanding effects left to resolve, Iden then suffers the damage. There is only one damage left to suffer, and ions do not count as suffering damage so she cannot use her ability to block them.
