The real important question about the SSD

OH, I personally have none. I think Jerry will work fine with it, but somewhere in the forums I think I read someone tought it wouldn't work. I could be wrong....

I'm one of those folks who thinks it won't work. If it does, then at speed 2 & Nav command, the thing will almost be able to turn 90 degrees. That's ridiculous for a ship that natively can't turn, and requires a nav to click 22.5 degrees. Coming from the X Wing background, there were plenty of things that didn't work on Huge ships just because it'd be stupid if they did. For example, you can't pass it focus tokens... I mean, just because the thing can't take the focus action doesn't mean that you shouldn't be able to pass focus tokens to it... Except that the huge ships were "balanced" (hahaha, like XWM ever had balance) around not having focus tokens and stacking mods. Likewise they couldn't take free actions, even though there were ships and pilots who should be able to hand out actions to them. Basically, a lot of the stuff that used to work with everything, we restricted to work with small/large ships, and exclude huge ships.

And I'm applying similar logic to the SSD. Let's run through the different commanders and how they scale with the SSD. <Flame shield up>

Ozzel - Brings him from 0 to 2. No different than a VSD.
Konstantine - doesn't "work" with huge ships. Expect errata to work with Huge ships. Will still be junk though.
Jerry - increases max turnage by 200%. Next closest is the VSD that increases it by 100%. Note without a dial, increases turnage by infinite, next closest by 200%.
Motti - doesn't technically work. Expect errata to work with Huge ships.
Sloane - SSD is unaffected by Sloane.
Tagge - Replaces 2 of 6 tokens, less effective in that regard. More effective in that all tokens are doubled, and due to size, likely to have R2 engagement.
Thrawn - Unaffected by SSD
Palp - Almost more effective without SSD just due to the ability to have more ships/shots
Vader - 6 tokens and 3 attacks means more opportunities, but fewer ships to benefit, overall in line probably.
Tarkin - Scales better with more ships.

So the only one that's drastically changed is Jerry. And since we can already expect Motti and Konstantine to also have errata to apply to huge ships, might as well add it for Jerry as well. That's not to say Jerry won't work at all, but perhaps he'll end up being something like "During a friendly ship's determine course step, it may suffer 1 damage. If it does, then until the end of its activation, a small, medium, or large base ship may change the first yaw value of its current speed to II. A huge base ship may change the first yaw value of its current speed to I." So at speed 2 with a nav token, you can double your turning, but it's still not as good as even a VSD. Or, you can just move and click for damage and Jerry has a purpose on an SSD without breaking the core aspect of the SSD.

If we take a look at other upgrades that might be affected in drastic ways by a Huge Ship...

EWS - 6 hull zones instead of 4, but each zone is larger. Seems reasonable.
Tua - Tua says that she can't go on a medium/large based ship with the defensive retrofit. So clearly she can go on the SSD and you can take another Defensive Retrofit. I highly doubt this is by design.
SA - Large ship only. SSD can't take SA, which seems silly imo.

So there will have to be some changes to cards in order to incorporate a new base size. I'm hoping that Jerry will be one of those changes, otherwise he's going to be pretty much an auto lock with anyone with an SSD that hopes to do something besides go straight x6. </Flame shield>

Better question - why blue engines?!

What the WHY!?

SSD engines are red in that, and the model is blue.

ISD engines are white in that, and the model is blue.

But no one complains about the ISD.

Well, since we can't have the models actually heat up that hot, the blue on the ISD models is a pretty decent approximation.

Honestly, your statement would be like saying, "We often color the sun yellow in pictures when it's actually close to white. Therefore we shouldn't find it odd if someone draws a purple sun."

Maybe it’s because I don’t have the models in front of me, but aren’t all imperial engine glows blue in armada?

Most Rebels are orange. I assumed it was a palatte choice to help differentiate the factions. (Imperial: cooler colors, Triangles, Gray, Blue engines; Rebels: warmer colors, gray w Brown/cream, Orange engine glow)

Yes. Because all Imperial vessels in Armada have blue engines. Except this one. This is more than a stylistic choice, as shown by the blue engines of all four Mon Cal vessels, the GR75 and the Nebulon, and the yellow engines of the Hammerhead. That said... I like this better. And it’s an easy thing to change.

All my rebel ships are painted earth tones with blue engines.

I do have a purple hammerhead though

I mean, I can navigate with regular ships now such as VSDs. And I get to add a click to their zero click at speed 1, so....

I can imagine Jerry with it sure, but Piett, Thrawn, Vader, and maybe a weird Sloane build. You're not STUCK with Jerry, there are other commanders.
