Once the newness of this game wears off I see it doing about as well as IA skirmish. It will still do better than Rune Wars.
a message for those who wonder about the success of SWL

Just like 40k does about as well as space hulk? Don't underestimate the power of star wars. People have been putting together beautiful terrain and painting some amazing miniatures. This game has the wow factor that games like imperial assault don't have.

I was doing that before I was even playing Assault. I just had pipe dreams of playing D6 again (which I've never stopped collecting to some degree or other), and then I was all "Eff it, let's buy Legion". Star Wars has a staying power among its devotees far beyond other franchises.

If you stick with this hobby for decades, you'll see them come and you'll see them go. The only thing I can easily think of that's still around from when I started is 40k. Though the rules and nature of the games have become unrecognizable since it was released.
People have a skewed perspective on what counts as "success". D20 lasted about six years, that's not a bad run for a game, in general.
All I can find for sale around here for Legion right now is core sets, and expansions consisting pretty much only of core set models. Hence my Hoth Imperial army has stalled out.
How long do new releases and official tournaments have to happen until a game can be said to have succeeded? 7 years? 10? It's gonna fold eventually. Nothing lasts forever. Legion isn't going to the be the next baseball or checkers.
Pretty much this. I've been playing Mordheim campaigns at least once a year every year since 1999 when it launched, and while it was only officially dropped by GW a few years ago(2014? 2015? Whenever they purged the Specialist Games from the website), functionally it was unsupported since the early oughts. Good games will last with or without "support" from a company even if playing them takes a smidge more effort than "show up at store", and people will always find ways to play in popular settings.
If FFG and Legion go down the pan and vanish into the ether, I don't really care so long as they don't do it until after they've put out a solid range of OT-era models and I've had a chance to buy the ones I want. I'd prefer they didn't, of course, if for no other reason than it sucks for people to end up unemployed, but in the end once I have a copy of the rules and the models I want it doesn't really impact me much what happens to the game or the company making it.
You have identified why some folk are so focused on the idea though - FFG have heavily cultivated "organised play" as the basis for the majority of their community, so that majority ends up heavily invested in whether or not FFG exists and continues to support that style.
I really hope there is just a Mandalorian faction. Instant $$$ invested lol. Been my fav for since I can remember

2013. A very unlukcy year indeed.

I'm still not convinced the majority of players are focused on organized play, beyond pipe dreams. Scrabble has competitive tournaments, very few people participate. Modern fictional-setting gamers DO seem to drop a game once new releases stop coming though. They need that regular hit to stay interested.

I finally have enough wee metal Boba's to make a Mandalorian squad for D6. I don't have a point really, just bragging.
Seems to be doing well to me, but what do I know?
I think; however, that if they want to keep people interested, playing, and buying they need to KEEP THEIR STUFF IN STOCK!!!! A few months ago I bought the Armada core-set and really liked it and wanted to expand a bit. I went looking for the Rebel/Imperial Squadrons packs to give myself a little variety in that respect of the game and NOPE both out of stock or being sold for quadruple their retail price on places like Amazon and independent sellers. It's now 2 and a half months later and it's looking like we're not gonna see a restock on those packs for another couple months....meanwhile my interest in Armada has been gradually decaying
In my area it's twice as popular as armada was in it's first year. We still have a good amount of armada players so if it keeps up it's momentum, I don't see legion going anywhere but up.
Locally Legion sold really well in the spring / early summer. Now it's just not moving from what I see. We likewise aren't seeing a lot of new Legion players, tho as we roll into fall I'm sure a few will pop out of the woodwork especially as the weather hits.
The biggest complain is lack of availability of stuff. Core things that you need to build a force... that's keeping out people wanting to get started. I don't understand why logistics is such an issue. Well I do, but seriously this stuff can be mitigated.
For those that have been playing or are playing, the lack of missions/deployments/condition cards is pretty serious. It effects replay-ability. Yes there are the ops but those aren't cards which people use for pick up games. What happens on the average week, pick up games... Ops while fun are a bigger commitment and for a number of the ops, their concept of playing the same person for a series of 4 games was unrealistic.
If I compare to GDW's Kill Team, the Kill Zone concept, IE you buy a box which gets you started on terrain for a game table set in a particular themed location. I think Fantasy Flight really could have had an opportunity there doing something similar. Sell me a box of Hoth themed terrain, cards and missions etc that go with it. So many themed locations in the Star Wars universe, it's a great concept. I love Imperial Terrain, it caused me to buy a 3D printer. I'm pretty fearless about terrain and putting in the extra effort. I'm weird tho. A lot of gamers these days are really drawn to things that will cut down in the investment in time and effort before they can get to playing. Another example the pre-painted X-Wing ships sure lowered the barrier for people to play that. There's a lesson there.
Ok so roughly a month since the last post in this thread. Boba and scouts are out; heavy weapons are coming; and it looks like there has be a restock on at least the base troops sets... I'm in the Orlando area too... Sci Fi City got them all in except the fleet troopers. I'm just getting into this but I'm hoping this will be the first signs of an uptick. Both sci Fi and Coliseum of Comics claim pretty high sales.of the game.

Drove an hour to get our stuff for the local crew as none of the closer shops got them in yet...I pretty much bought the store out. Got 3 Bobas, 6 scouts, and a snow troop lol (Boba 3 scouts and a snow just for myself, rest for the other guys) We have a tourney next Saturday hoping for 10-12 players to show up.
Nice! I need more scouts. But Boba is a beautiful model. Good luck with your tournament!
I dunno, as much as I love the game and the feel of the tables, it's a flop in my area (Coventry,UK). Only seen a few people play it and most were an intro game which didn't turn into anything.

It's got a nice community going on in Leeds. A bit far for you to come up for rrgular games though.
I've introduced the game to 2 friends. One bought into it (and did some nice painting too). I've got 3 more I'm trying to set up a game with. If I can get one of them to commit that would be pretty big for my local gaming area.
Unfortunately my FLGS only stocks the starter set. I don't think they've sold too many either. The owner said he feels like people aren't likely to get into ANOTHER Star Wars game (decent X-wing and Armada sales), but I think that's not accurate. Legion is a very different type of game. Hopefully the game becomes more popular and a community develops.

I dunno! With the amount I'm spending on it I may as well make use of it xD

I wonder what the updated numbers are. Spring 2018 was roughly right before they ran out of everything.
I’ve personally noticed a pretty significant stagnation in interest since the initial excitement wore off and nothing new was released (or in stock) for ~4 months.
Our store is starting to see what I've known as a "second recruitment" season. The guys that tried it and didn't really care have not come back. Meanwhile, new guys are seeing the game get played and getting interested.
Thankfully, most of the people that didn't like it were people that weren't as fun to play with. The new guys showing up are plenty of fun to play against.
In my area, Legion was very popular when it first launched.....then 40k Kill Team and Age of Sigmar 2.0 dropped and killed all interest in Legion. Can't really blame it on stock as my FLGS seems to have a decent amount. No one is buying though. Its admittedly tough in my area as 40k (as well as now Kill Team) is the dominate game. You always see a game of 40k or Kill Team being played just about any day during the week.

Yeah, we're down to 2 active buys at our FLGS ... Kill Team and Sigmar dominate the local scene with other games sprinkled in. Nobody even purchased X-Wing 2.0 (and it used to be huge).

People don't spend hundreds of pounds on Scrabble core sets and expansions, hundreds of hours painstakingly hand-painting their Scrabble tiles, and hundreds more hours reading books (or indeed watching videos) about the fictional Scrabble universe.
That doesn't mean organized play is or is not something the majority of players care about, but comparisons to Scrabble (or chess, or most other traditional board games) are very weak. Wargaming is a hobby far beyond the game itself.

This is what I say like every 2 seconds. "The hobby is bigger than the game, the game is bigger than the rules" is my saying.

Where abouts in Leeds is it? Patriot Games? I've been wanting to delve into Legion for a while, but everybody I know just flocked back to GW products so I abstained.
