2.0. Cluster Missiles or Proton Rockets for Vader?

By Shockley, in X-Wing Squad Lists

How often will we see ships flying in formation within range 1? I predict swarms will make a comeback if even for a limited time and the Rebels appear to have a lot of close flying synergies. I'm debating flying the two following lists in a tournament on opening weekend.

List One...

(84) Rexler Brath
(4) Heavy Laser Cannon
(4) Juke
Points 92

(70) Darth Vader
(12) Supernatural Reflexes
(3) Fire-Control System
(8) Afterburners
(7) Proton Rockets
Points 100

Total points: 192

List 2...

(84) Rexler Brath
(4) Heavy Laser Cannon
(4) Juke
(3) Fire-Control System
Points 95

(70) Darth Vader
(12) Supernatural Reflexes
(3) Fire-Control System
(8) Afterburners
(5) Cluster Missiles
Points 98

Total points: 193

I'd probably go for proton rockets given a choice.

  • Cluster missiles let you split fire at range 2 if you're prepared to invest a force token to give the second attack some modification, but it means one attack with a target lock (or more likely a single-die reroll) and one attack with a focus (or a single-die focus modification).
    • That means you're far more likely to wound two targets than kill one, even if they're TIE/ln fighters.
    • At range 1, you're better with primary weapons (because you get 4 dice with an automatic critical against a locked target).
  • Proton Rockets are more awkward to use - I admit - but if you have a shot, it's 5 dice - unambiguously better than your primary weapons in all situations. Even if the enemy is bunched up, a single kill-shot is probably better.
    • There is one noticeable exception to that; Iden Versio lets your opponent tank one attack - regardless of how much damage it causes. Obviously, therefore, try to avoid flinging proton rockets at her or at anyone within range 1 of her.
