Store Championship Awesomeness at the Guardtower East in Columbus Ohio

By ForceSensitive, in Star Wars: Armada

We had a great turnout of fourteen players! To our knowledge with only a few left to go this season, that put us as the largest in Ohio. The core group from the weekly game night comprised the bulk, with about 3 or so new faces we were happy to have break up the field. All the players were super awesome and friendly and fought with both honor and distinction in the face of danger. Congratulations commanders, one and all!

A very diverse meta was seen with an almost even split to factions, 6 Empire to 8 Rebel. Very few repeat commanders were seen, in fact I think the only ones were Raddus and Dodonna twice each. Fairly ship heavy field with a smattering of squads, only one dedicated squadron fleet to my memory. The top four was a tight fight with most only being separated by a point, first was only two points ahead. 25 points and over 600mov took first with a Rebel gun line of Nebulons and Garm bel Iblis as Commander that has been terrorizing our local scene for a few months now.

Special thanks to all my guys in SF-614 for all their amazing help getting the event together, the word out, and getting involved, it would not have been a success without you all! Also special thanks to Raven Squadron for all their back up and letting us guest run their Championship this coming weekend at Ravenstone Games in Columbus Ohio, check the Star Wars: Armada Ohio Facebook group for details. Lastly, special thanks to Cryodex tournament software for being our tech solution for tournament tracking, the platform ran great and it's free!

So long, and may The 614th be with you!

Lol, the player who runs it likes to keep it close to the chest, so I'll let him reveal details if he wants. I'm sure you'll see it at regionals. Funny thing is that was his second SC win this season. Not sure if he ran the same list for his other win. But I will say there are FOUR nebs involved.

We had an interesting Dodonna list with a Pelta, 2 Nebs, and a pickle push some serious hurt yesterday.

Fair enough,

I am curious because I ran this for a while and it was just a tad too slow at killing ISDs which are everywhere these days:

@Ginkapo your like a hop skip and a jump away from his list ?

Guardtower is best tower. I really liked that we had a good mix of experience levels. A number of people who don’t usually do store championships came out and had fun blowing up ships. The Armada crew here is seriously great, playing on Mondays is always one of the highlights of my week. :)

Have to say, I'm curious about this list now. Four Nebs would be cool to see on the table - definitely an iconic Star Wars design. Heck, it's in the core set even. But with Garm? Huh. What an...odd choice...

Special thanks to @ForceSensitive for running the event and being a awesome judge. It was great seeing everyone promoting this on facebook in the weeks leading up.

I will say that the competition in Columbus has become a serious thing over the past few months. We've had a ton of people start Armada since the end of last year that have wanted to play competitively. It's nice to see the real improvement going on.

With that said, I'm the weirdo with the Garm fleet. Our group had a discussion several months ago about which ship is the worst in Armada. A few people agreed it was the Neb B Support Refit. In a combination of disagreement and my trolling nature, I decided to make it happen.

My fleet originally had Raddus in a defensive role, but I realized after a few games that I was spending too many points and too much brain power keeping tokens on my Nebs(which is desperately needed). So I tried Garm and swapped some ships around. This was my result.

++ Standard (Rebel Fleet) [399pts] ++

+ GR-75 Transport Flotilla +

GR-75 Medium Transports [25pts]: •Toryn Farr

Nebulon-B Support Frigate [58pts]: Quad Battery Turrets, •Ahsoka Tano

Nebulon-B Support Frigate [56pts]: Quad Battery Turrets

A-Wing [33pts]: •Shara Bey, •Tycho Celchu

Assault Objective: Opening Salvo

Defense Objective: Contested Outpost

++ Total: [399pts] ++

I get two reactions when people first see this fleet. First is,"Four Nebs?". Second is,"This will be easy.".

My fleet does have some big weaknesses(Heavy bomber fleets), but it's deceptively tough and puts out a ton of damage, from any arc, over the course of a turn.

I tried keeping this fleet as a little secret, but I honestly don't think anyone will believe me enough to start using it or to actively work to counter it. ?

@Quadro28 I got to test this one out. Though I might swap the yellow objective and maybe a Neb for a Slaved Turrets Scout Hammerhead.

@TallGiraffe What would you take as a yellow objective?

I like contested outpost since it a) gives me points and b) lets me slow roll while giving me points.

I considered Hammerheads in this fleet, but I can't see how they'd work better without a completely new fleet design. Nebs with QBT, Garm, Toryn and IF castle very well. It's the synergy that works. Slaved turrets cuts out value from my other components. And I like the consistency of blue dice with Toryn.

Jamming Barrier primarily. I am worried someone could just drive an ISD in front of the outpost.

I personally would swap a single Neb for Garel's Honor Scout with Slaved Turrets because it is about the same price as a Neb with the same firepower at command 1. Add Dcaps for a blue at long range.

Also wider front arc.

I'm a big fan of having objectives that give points, but I did consider jamming barrier. Nebs really want to stay long range, and I see jamming barrier working better for fleets that want to close in.

And ISD or two running strait for the contested outpost is exactly what I want. I think anyone from Columbus can attest to how much damage this fleet puts out. Funnneling ships to a single, known point on the board is a powerful way to get ships where I want.

Accurate. The last thing I'd want to do is aim an ISD at that gun line. It cracks out like 20 damage a turn. Even side arc is dangerous on them as he is still rolling three to four dice with intensify per shot. Quadro is also a very skilled pilot and is adept at speed and range planning to a high degree. Trust him, the fleet is fine as it is.

@Quadro28 ever think about projection experts?

Garm typically gives an Engineering token to the Nebs on turn one. That's 2 points to move 2 shields ideally from the rear to the front, but it works as a budget projection experts for each individual ship. If that token isn't needed, Ahsoka can change it.

Dedicating an entire ship to engineering commands is hard to do justify to keep a bunch of <60 point ships alive.

I mean... The Pelta is already geared for it....

The pelta is geared for IF madness. Quadro is free to set Concentrate dials on it every turn, and get double value from Raymus. I think experts would just drag down the engine, for really no gain. Quadro is full aware of the glass cannon nature of Nebulons from years of Yavaris play and like he said, a token to shift shields around is about as much as should ever be put into saving it.

A few reason why it can't work in this fleet

1) No points for it.

2) The Pelta is typically #1 priority for opponents. Projection experts won't help here.

3) Intensify Firepower needs the concentrate fire token every turn. I could use my initial Garm token to use PE, but see point #2.

4) 56 points for a Neb with QBT. It's not a huge concern if one goes down. At least not enough to sacrifice 10 potential damage per turn from IF.

@ForceSensitive Thanks for letting me watch the game tonight. I’ll do my best to put together an Armada list and show up next week.

Sounds great! We'll look forward to it! ? Can't wait for you to meet more of the crew!

I feel like this is a beautiful trolling attempt where the C-Bus guys try to get a bunch of hapless neck-deckers stomped at Regionals who foolishly bring this Neb list, haha.

I just don't see how it could ever handle dedicated fighter wings or Ackbar MC80 Objective Pickles.

I also plan on trying something along the lines of this.

Faction: Rebel
Commander: General Dodonna

Total Points: 398

Assault: Most Wanted
Defense: Contested Outpost
Navigation: Solar Corona

MC80 Command Cruiser (106)
• General Dodonna (20)
• Electronic Countermeasures (7)
• Leading Shots (4)
• XI7 Turbolasers (6)
• Home One (7)
= 150 Points

Pelta Assault Ship (56)
• Intensify Firepower! (6)
= 62 Points

Nebulon-B Support Refit (51)
• Intel Officer (7)
• Dual Turbolaser Turrets (5)
• Salvation (7)
= 70 Points

Nebulon-B Support Refit (51)
• Intel Officer (7)
• Dual Turbolaser Turrets (5)
= 63 Points

GR-75 Medium Transports (18)
• Comms Net (2)
= 20 Points

Squadrons:
• Tycho Celchu (16)
• Shara Bey (17)
= 33 Points

I posted something eerily similar back in July. Played a couple times...but those side arcs....

Your list looks superior, ill try it out.

That is a remarkably similar fleet to the one I've been using. The biggest difference is the QBTs. QBTs turn Neb side arcs from awful to respectable. They also force your opponent to make one of 2 possible bad choices; Slow down to not take QBT, but stay at long/medium range longer. Or speed up to close in, but take a lot of extra dice on the approach. 3 and 4 dice side arcs(QBT plus CF) combined with toryn, cf token, and IF makes for consistent and annoying side arcs.
