I didn't enjoy Legion - Edit - But will give it another try now

By Shadow345, in Star Wars: Legion

Played a few games and didn't particularly enjoy Legion.

I think X-Wing system was lightning in a bottle that captured players but I think a build and paint hobby game that's too similar to other wargames was the wrong direction. At the very least, it didn't work for me and feel that 6 turn based large wargames are a bit antiquated after the success of X-Wing.

6 rounds is a pretty odd thing to specifically point out amongst the plethora of rules

You should contact your local new service with this important announcement.

Just for the case, that he isn't as known on the Legion Forum. He is Troll. he makes Topics with one question, that is often provocating and then almost never posts in that thread again. He is well kown on the Xwing forum, though he always gets answers, which I don't really get.

I hope people these days realize just because you don't like something doesn't make you troll.

I actually bought some Legion in good will and hoped to enjoy it.

I guess as one poster pointed out this topic doesn't have to be a thread but i'm just voicing how I felt about the game.

I think its more because people are linking what you said in this forum and the armada one.

Both have common themes, which can be summed up to:

1. Both games have 6 turns

2. Both games are not Xwing

However the way you voiced your opinion initially has many hallmarks of a troll post: posting a potentially inflammatory comment ("why do 6 turn games exist with X-wing") with no supporting experiences or opinions just, "I don't like this game." Why didn't you like it? What did you like, if anything? You obviously felt it was important to post your opinion here, so why not take the time to explain your dislike. It could be that someone here can help you better understand the aspect you don't like.

In my opinion, to compare Armada, Legion, and X-wing to each other is comparing apples, oranges, and pears. They are all miniature wargames, all special FFG dice in various colours with various symbols, and use movement tools of some kind. But the "type" of wargame is very different. X-wing is a dogfighting wargame, controlling a small group of fighters in tight turns and trying to line up shots on your opponent's minis. Armada is all about capital ships, which should "feel" slow and heavy in movement, lining up broadsides, not nimble like the fighters in X-Wing.

Legion is a ground based wargame, focusing on infantry and support vehicles/weapons. Again, the movement and shooting should have a particular "feel" (infantry ignoring facing for shooting, able to move in any direction, vehicles limited to forward and back). The size of the engagements should also be larger to allow for a better representation of a reinforced platoon. Cover and the ability to stay in one place (something that wouldn't feel "right" for nimble fighters dogfighting) means the games can drag on if eliminating your opponent is the only way to win. A turn limit forces players to act semi-aggressively if they want to take the objective and win. Additionally, a turn limit just feels "right" for infantry combat, many historical battles weren't fought to the last man, but rather until one side decided either that it had completed the objective so there was no reason to continue using resources/soldiers on fighting, or that they absolutely could not complete the objective with the soldiers and resources on hand.

Saying X-wing should have killed all 6 turn miniature games is, in my mind, akin to saying "Settlers of Catan exists, so I don't understand why other boardgames are being produced."

At least that's my take on things.

Wait Settlers isnt the only Board game?

Thats a pity. I was never into wargaming very seriously though I enjoyed the model making and painting. Got into x wing and by extension Legion and I really love it. Its fairly intuitive, minimal book-keeping and the pace is quick but has the hobby element too. Ive played more legion in 3 months than I would have in a year of other games.

If you like X-wing so much, go play it.

A lots happened in the past couple of years... you'd be amazed

OP is the A-Typical X-Wing player here. Like why would you post in here that you don't like the game. None of us care if you don't like it. This forum for helping players and talking about the game between those that love this game. Obviously 2 communities know who you are now. Maybe you should move to, oh wait, you wouldn't like Imperial Assault because it's not X-Wing.

Well shadow, you are a known troll on this forum ?

I've been doing life wrong...I have to go look up every board game I've ever played once and go make a post in its online forum stating that I didn't like it ?

Don’t forget to compare them to another game system that plays completely differently.

* checks calender* its been a few days... right on time. Its random legion negativity day!

I'll take your stuff off your hands.

So you like x-wing more. Thats fine, I hope you have fun playing it. If you have any constructive criticism please do speak your mind and maybe we can get some good debate on this forum. But if you don’t like legion, you’re in the wrong place. This is the legion forum

Oh, man -- Legion is bad? I didn't realize. I guess I wasted all that time making terrain and painting minis then. I'm glad you warned me -- I'd better bin this stuff and go pick up a good game. I hear there's a Warhammer 40k version of Monopoly coming out.

Hold Up!

Don't Panic.

I had a freak out because I had too many games planned to play over the weekend and it was doing me in. So I cancelled all my games and needed a wind down and now that I've thought about it for a day I will give Legion some more games in a week or two.

Didnt realise how much I missed skirmish wargames after quitting 40k some 5 years ago.

Legion is fantastic!

Yeah...nice try on the retracting. We all know you did this in the Armada forum too. Just go back to the X-Wing forum and wait to bash 2.0 and that community.

Well it is technically a retraction, but i'm allowed to change my mind or not?

Maybe you should read my Armada post. I actually play that game and was putting forth a question as to why a lot of people aren't picking it up.

I'll give Legion another go in a couple of weeks.

In the meanwhile, it might be useful to ask about any particulars you don't really understand about the rules, or perhaps give more explanation about what you didn't enjoy. It may be something that can be explained or you misunderstood.
