I think the Rouge Squadron books are the biggest reason I like Armada. Even though they focus on one fighter squadron there is quite often multiple squadrons and several capital ships, sometimes entire fleets. Thats also why I tried for ages to make decent rules for the starship battles game. Due to no star destroyers in X-wing its impossible for me to capture the feel of the books. Plus big ships are cool.
Who is Armada for?
I actually came over from X-Wing. I used to play X-Wing almost every weekend with friends. I started late in X-Wing as well (TFA core set launch). I quite enjoyed the game.
My issue with X-Wing was it's limited in scope and thematic play. With the biggest ships being the raider and gozanti you don't get the full Star wars feel. It also didn't help I wasn't a fan of scum and it seemed like they were getting the best stuff. So I decided to take a lookinto armada. ..
I was put off by armada due to scale at first. Fighters being grossly large compared to ships and scale being out of wack on certain ships... but I gave it a shot anyway, loved the idea of capital ships with fighter support on a large scale. Thanks to @Crabbok for his videos for armada (and the reason I got into x-wing )I overcame my issues with it and picked up the core set... never looked back since
Also the community here is better than X-Wings in my opinion. You guys are awesome
Speaking for myself, I think, is for anyone who want to play one of the best strategic/tactical game on the market !
Little story of mine: one and a half years ago I didn't know the existence of FFG, x-wing and all that stuff. I'm not a tabletop guy, last time I put a foot in a local game store (before I get into Armada) was in 1999 and I was playing MTG with my friends in high school. I got into Armada because I saw an x-wing batrep on YouTube and think "this look great even if the game mechanic look a bit too random" then watching more video I saw the CR90 and this make me wondering if that game was having more big ships. I did some research and I discovered Armada and was surprised it was made by the same company, not even hesitate and I ordered a core set.
A week after tried my first game (february 03 2017) and just fall in love with this game !
In the course of a year I have get my hand on every expansion even double and triple and to be honest I don't make lots of money.
I have also tried to make a local group, but everyone in my city was already playing x-wing and yes the argument "I have already invested a lot in x-wing I will not buy into Armada" is the main answer I got. I didn't keep the effort of trying to hook up people as I'm very lucky to have 2 default opponent and get my regular 3-4 games/week in the comfort of my home.
I did try X-wing, but seriously... Armada is like 500% better in my opinion!
So in the end this make me wonder at how things would be different if the Armada we know was release before X-wing?

I think Armada’s later release is an important part of what makes it a better game. Less power creep, reasonable dice, a great maneuver system... A lot of lessons were probably learned from X-wing.

And many of the simple and nice mechanics were abandoned for Armada and instead we got a 6 turn wargame system again. Also the ability to manuever in X-Wing can be answered with a K-Turn but Armada punishes the player until they have played enough games to manuever and get the best firing arcs.
Now I was lured in with the chance to buy and play Imperial Star Destroyers and Mon Calamari Cruisers but money is a real thing so it's not surprising that many X-Wing players I have heard from don't feel inspired to double dip on a second FFG Star Wars starship game.
X-wing sucks.

I haven't had the chance to play Armada yet, but as an X-Wing player, this is actually something I'm very much interested in about Armada. My play group doesn't really go in for the missions in X-Wing, and only occasionally does anyone do the campaign, so most games are just standard, 100-point duels to the death. Having a system with objectives and a time limit actually sounds like a fun alternative.

An ImpStar Deuce is supposed to handle like a TIE Fighter? O_o
I don't know if I'd really view it as a punishment as much as just a bigger learning curve.

Are you Wedge Antilles or Admiral Ackbar? Decisions, decisions...
I played Xwing since first release. Slowly got power creeped to death, and I found that fr me it lacked strategic depth.
Then Armada!! Got it at release. Eventually sold all my Xwing.
To me, Xwing is for the more casual gamer who wants a 15 minute game based on simple card combinations, and not much more.
Armada is for the more serious gamer who wants a finely balanced game, that rewards strategic planning and thinking ahead, and STAR DESTROYERS.
I played tabletop games in till mid 90s, and mostly naval thematic games; 7th Fleet, 2nd Fleet, Hunt for Red October, Axis and Allies, then it was over for me, PC took over then PS and Xbox.
I saw X-Wing models on stores and a begin to see a lot of youtube videos about the game ( ironically first one was Wil Wheaton playing) but I was not attracted to the game. I loved the models of X-Wing, even thought of buying a few them just for display purposes.
However, all that changed when I saw Armada's core set at a store. I loved the art work on the box and the miniatures and my hand reached for the box immediately, till I saw the price and my hand retracted in an instant.
A few months later I came back and I re-entered the table top gaming after twenty years of absence. Reasons?
- Miniatures, artwork, presentation, the whole packages looks great, not like the games of the 80s and 90s.
- Game play is complex yet logical, you can play the game knowing the basic rules or you can really go deep and have fun in both cases( with more or less same level opponents).
X-Wing has most of these qualities but then why is Armada for me but not X-Wing?
Well, when I watch Star Wars, I prefer to be in Ackbar's chair rather than Luke's, I love commanding squadrons but not individual fighters, I really enjoyed playing X-Wing and Tie Fighter in PC but it gave me an extra pleasure to play Rebellion because I could command fleets and Armada fullfills me in every possible way.
With its high price and complex game play, everyone thinks Armada players are elitist who play the game at a cigar rooms with drinking a nice glass of brandy but in reality, it is two different type of games that are for two different types of players.

I think most every strategy game has some amount of planning ahead and some amount of reacting to events as they come, but in different measures. X-Wing has a little planning ahead but seems to involve a lot more reaction, while Armada has some reacting but involves a lot more planning ahead, especially if you're flying Large ships.
