Of what we know of the SSD (which isn't a lot), is it an enticing different gameplay experience?

By Blail Blerg, in Star Wars: Armada

Do we even know if its "allowed" to turn at all? Seems like Moffy J is a bit of a cheat. Nor do I imply that having 0 yaws literally means it can't turn.

Is the SSD actually fun and different at 400pts? Or just a very large ISD that takes forever to kill and will make for half-kill-half-point nightmares like large ships did in Xwing? And also is best supplemented with a fighter group, as you don't have enough points for activations and ships that move?

I think it's too early to tell. Without knowledge of the special Huge ships rules, the only thing we can do is guess.

From what we know right now, I don't feel like it's something that will be fun to play or play against outside of the (admittedly sizeable) thematic element.

My biggest fear is that (again, barring rule changes), it will make the game very binary/kill-it-or-you-lose.

I guess this kind of situation can already happen with Christmas-tree ISDs, but it feels like the SSD makes it worse.

One of the things that could help is if there are objectives specifically tailored for playing/playing against huge ships.

I can see myself wanting to go against it once or twice, but at the moment it's not something I find very appealing for the 400-point format.

I have a feeling that this ship won't be very fun in 400 point games, but in epic play (800?) I think it could be a blast.

I don't think it would be my playing style. Palpatine interests me though, and I'm hoping he will be a good counter to the SSD.

With the little we know I personally don't think it will be very competitive at 400 points or in tournament play. It will lose the activation game in everything except mirror matches. Skirt it at long range and I don't think it will habe a chance. MC80h, MC75, and AFM2, along with Arquitens should do well against it. As should Cymoons that can stay in one arc at a time. It will also succumb to bombers pretty quick.

If it brings anti Squad squads to deal with bombers the ships will get it, if it brings bombers other squads should lock them down.

I think it will be more fun in the higher point formats but as for 400 point standard games and tournament's I don't see it being all that effective.

To be honest I hope it has some compatibility with Corellian Conflict game or some similar campaign. I would like to see it in a few games as this is where the Big Scary Imperial Fleet is making it seem that heroes can't be at all places in the galaxy at once. Still it is nice to see it hitting the table.

Kiiiind of this, in our (half-made-up-rules) games with it.

The big takeaway we all had was "huh, this just feels like another Armada ship, rather than something that completely changes the game", like the biggest models in some infantry wargames or in x-wing do.

Base waaay too big for it to have any movement and positioning dynamism that makes Armada games great. Not sure what they were thinking having an elogated base of that size. A slightly larger base than the large would have been fine and it would have kept the movement map dynamism. It could still have one or no movement clicks.

The entire game is a big abstraction, you don't need to maintain scale at all. Size could be represented by big hull value and armaments.

Who knows, maybe it comes with its own movement tool. Doubt it. Btw, no way it works with JJ.

Why?

According to current rules it Definitely does work with jj

Yes.

I have used the SSD once and it was pretty much a smash up to see how it works. Tomorrow I'm going to try it again but with objectives that might not favour it, probably against a Raddus list. Some of the pics are up on my twitter @rebelfleethq if you want to check it out!!!!!

Alot of rebel naysay going on in here.

They were thinking how do we keep a really large model stable so it won't fall over and break the expensive model you just bought.

This is important to keep in mind. X-Wing Huge ships had several special rules, and I don't see why Armada Huge ships wouldn't do the same.

Indeed - and perhaps those special rules only kick in for Epic (i.e. >400pt) play. E.g. a new range of armament on a new range ruler would be nice to represent the powerful armament and offset the lack of navigation.

Not to me. About half our group is excited, the other half is ambivalent to near opposed. Lots of fun is being poked at it. We've tested it out a few times with a 3d printed base mockup, knowing we're not certain of the rules anyway. I think it's just stupid and will happily knock it about when anyone field it against me. The epic play format sounds silly as well, but time will tell.

My position is unchanged from the prediction threads. Give me a 6x3 play mat with the thing as the art. And they have all those awesome card and box arts they could have used any of them for it and I would have dropped $80 on it in a heart beat. But there's no way I'm paying retail for that thing. Even at the store where I get 20% discount. It's just not worth the tag. The only people I see who are committed to buying one currently are the super fans who just want it for the model as a display piece. And if that's what they want it for I think they would be better off buying Legos. But that's just me.

Whatever the ship will do when it is deployed on a 6x3 game mat, it already killed all those "Armada is d**d" posts for over two weeks now! I really love this ship!

(It's triangular, anyway.)

To each his own. I'm getting two. Price to me is immaterial (retired military, got plenty of play money...lol). And I intend to use both. But then, I love huge games, so planning on some 1500 or so games to field these.

I'm fairly certain it won't be the most fun list you can play with/against in normal matches, but I think it will be great to play with/against in larger matches. Generally speaking in pretty much all wargames I have ever played, the more eggs you put in one basket (typically a very high cost 'uber' unit that forces games to be based around its presence on the table) the less fun those matches typically are. When you put >50% of your points in 1 unit, your opponent basically has only 2 options: focus on it with everything he has to hope bring it down which will if he succeeds pretty much guarantee him the game, but its a big gamble. Or the second smarter option, evade it so it doesn't earn back its points which can result in very drawn out annoying matches where you may end up with a draw or just a very slight victory.

As the size of the matches increase, this all eggs in one basket problem will get reduced.

edit: I do like that we get the SSD, although I will not get one anytime soon due to the cost.

Good idea. That way you can bury one on Coruscant to use as a top-secret brainwashing prison.

I am thinking of getting one, because I like the idea of slapping enhanced armaments on it, getting 4 extra red dice, and super broadsiding with it.

I'm just imagining playing Imperial Assault - Heart of the Empire expansion. In the middle of a mission, everything gets flipped upside down and a SSD comes out from under the table. All of a sudden the heroes are traveling through space on the SSD and need to take control of it or destroy it...

CROSS-GAME INTEGRATION TIME!!!

The Imperial player literally flips the table. Everyone thinks he's really mad or frustrated until they see the Lusankya...

We don't know if that works.

The problem is also you’re not gonna get the same arcs on target. Also to me that low level firepower doesn’t make it feel stronger than a ISD. I was expecting something like 10 dice front and 6 or so on the sides. It’s close.
