Soontir and the Boogeymen 1.0 list

By nurglez, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Recently I have been flying this rather fun little list.

Soontir & the Boogeymen (97)
Scarif Base Pilot — TIE Reaper 22
Tactical Officer 2
Intelligence Agent 1
Lightweight Frame 2
Advanced Ailerons 0
Ship Total: 27

Major Vermeil — TIE Reaper 26
Veteran Instincts 1
Director Krennic 5
ISB Slicer 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Advanced Ailerons 0
Ship Total: 36

Soontir Fel — TIE Interceptor 27
Push the Limit 3
Autothrusters 2
Targeting Computer 2
Royal Guard TIE 0
Ship Total: 34

It's great fun, coordinating Soontir at PS1 leads to some rather fun tricks, and you can of course switch to Vermeil to either Jam 2 ships then sloop/run away, or to turtle up with a focus and evade.

While I fully agree that Palp is very good and all, I find him boring. He's quite costly, and is just too good in certain situations, and also means that if my opponent has a Palp reaper I can trade and still be up on points.

I shared a post in the battle report section with a link to a report of this list at 2 store championships (available here), I also took it to a small SC last weekend where I finished 6th, beating inquisitor, palp reaper and Vermeil and 5 U wings, losing to Nymanda.

I don't think Soontir needs TC if he's getting the condition. Then again...is he getting the condition?

The condition gives the ship with Krennic (Vermeil) a TL on the target that the prototype (Soontir) shot at.

So yes. He needs a targeting computer.

He doesn't need TC. Being able to target lock is nice to have thou. Even with the Krennic condition on Soontir. He still passes lock to Vermail, but at a certain point, your opponents ship is going to run out of shields.

With that said, I prefer stealth device. Hull upgrade is another nice idea too. Soontir's main goal is to not die. Doing some damage and taking out some ships before his entourage explodes.

Targeting Computer vs (defensive upgrade) is always an interesting choice on Soontir. There are frequently times when, after a single reposition, you are out of arc and won't need an Evade, so you just double-focus. With Targeting Computer, you can take a TL instead. It can still be useful to reroll blanks, since when shields are down you can't spend them with Optimized Prototype.

Palpatine changes the equation. You can Palp a crit when you're really trying to push through damage, and Palp for an Evade can protect a Stealth Device better. With Palpatine, I think Targeting Computer kinda becomes a bit less interesting. Without Palp, I don't really love Stealth Device, but Hull Upgrade is a reasonable choice. I figure both Hull and TC have a place.

Part of that is that Hull Upgrade and Stealth Device often don't feel to necessary. Last game I played, Soontir never took damage. A few rolls were close enough (evade, focus, 4x blank at range 3 through a rock, but still focus/evaded), but I know I had times when a TL would have been a good action to have. So TC is amazing when things are going right. Hull Upgrade and Stealth Device are for those games when things go wrong.

TC Soontir is great fun. I'd lost count of the times Soontir gets into range 1 only to whiff his roll. I dont like Palp (as i stated above) so a TC is the next best thing to make him reliable once a target's shields are down.
