So I have Heirs of Blood, and I'm aware that most consider it to be the superior quest.
But it just seems like, story wise at least, you're missing out on a lot if you don't have The Shadow Rune campaign.
As of now, my version of the game just feels... unfinished. For instance, there's even a quest called "The Baron Returns". From what, might I ask? Because without the first campaign, that just seems like a stupid in-joke that my group and I aren't a part of.
The Farrows seem better fleshed out (no pun intended) in Heirs of Blood, but Zachareth, Belthir, and Splig definitely seem to get better featured in Shadow Rune. I know my group would've loved to play Shadow, and eventually return to those characters later in Heirs of Blood. It just feels weird to me to literally make the foundation of the game's story discontinued. It'd be like if Peter Jackson decided to stop selling copies of Fellowship because he thought Two Towers was better.
If they needed to update the campaign, at this point I think they should've included the Shadow Rune campaign quest in addition to Heirs of Blood in core, or just retell the story of The Shadow Rune with better missions. As far as I'm concerned, people who bought the game before HoB came out got a superior experience, in that at least they could buy the campaign they were missing separately. I don't have that luxury.
I've almost completed my collection of Descent I started in January (just one expansion and a few lieutenants away), so it's really frustrating to me that I don't even have an option to purchase this as a standalone.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. Any advice?
