Kill Vader first?

By soontir67, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

On a youtube video the comment was that you should ignore vader and go first for his companions. When I played against Vader I always tried to kill him first because he is the greatest threat. What are your thoughts?

I think the aim there is to avoid vader as much as possible and whittle away his support.

Otherwise, you've spent 1/2/3 rounds trying to kill Vader, and now have the rest of the enemy list to deal with, all of which are probably healthy and gunning for you (or grabbing objectives).

I.e. don't take the bait and waste your time and limited activation's trying to take down one (albeit threatening) figure, kill his support / try to kite him / grab objectives).

It depends.... :)

If you get the opening and have the dps to kill off Vader first and fast, then go ahead. The problem with trying to kill Vader first, is when you fail (bad roll, CCs) - then the Vader player still has Vader AND all his friends. This can also depend heavily on map.

I played against Vader list on Uscru at the regional in DK and just ran my *** off against Vader while taking down all his friends (should be said though, that I also had all the small-luck on my side: getting just enough damage through to kill his stuff, while he was constantly 1-2 damage short). I made it to 40 through objective points, Jabba, Jawa and Pickpocket tricks.

If you want to ignore him, do it properly. He's one, so split your group.

There's a few variables to consider when deciding if you want to attack Vader. If you have the firepower and cards to take vader down in round 1 or early round two, eliminate that threat. If your list doesn't have the firepower or maybe you haven't drawn the cards you need or cards and you won't be able to finish off Vader before he's already activated enough times to get his value back, then spread out and target the threats you can eliminate.

I like it when my opponent spreads out when I play Unshakeable Vader Jets. Makes it easy to pick off their isolated figures before they activate without exposing my units to a massive counter attack.

Unless you’re playing Hunters and have drawn at least 2 of the good cards (Assassinate, Tools, Reflexes, Primary Target), or you’re playing a Rebel box (Han+Drokkatta), you should probably not be shooting at Vader.

I agree. Make him make a choice. Then let him get stuck on one side of the board. I rarely go at Vader.

I only go after Vader if I have all / most of the cards in hand necessary to take him down- ie- element of surprise, assassinate, heightened reflexes... and all of the guys shooting at him are focused up.

Man. If you can merc him early with all the great cards, that would be a huge boost.

True, but generally, I play Rebels, so, it's a little more of a lucky draw. Scum can do it pretty easily with all their card draw.

Anyway with second chance and extra armour I don't really see how you can tear him down early game.

Han/Drokkatta chew vader up and spit him out.

I could believe that. Also, with Chewy you may get off the stun. If he doesn't have Unshakeable, that can be costly for him. Other than Greedo, Chewy is my favourite figure in the game. For 11 pts, he can do a lot.
