The Empire betrayed at Coruscant

By HolySorcerer, in X-Wing

So the result of the vote for the Coruscant invitational are up, and the Empire has been betrayed! We voted for Ruthless because it would be the least restrictive on list building, but FFG now announces that the voted for upgrades will be 0 points for the event! We could have had the Emperor by our side for no cost, instead we get a mediocre EPT at a one point discount.

They couldn’t have let us know that. Move on.

Shoulda done zer cost Vader

Considering his ability, Palp is actually hilariously affordable compared to literally every other force gunner/crew

Also, insert "it's treason, then..." Here

You're assuming they didn't make up that rule after the voting was complete.

Just spam Ruthless? You can run Howlrunner, a 30-point TIE fighter, and 5 Black Squadron Ace's for 200 points, then add Ruthless on all of them for free. Yeah, you get hurt, but adding damage to a 2-dice attack seems pretty good for front-loading damage on the enemy.

No no no! I have infinite respect for you, but you are wrong!

FFG asked what was the most representative upgrade for each faction, and told it will be compulsorily upgrade.

Most of the people ( cheated voting multiple times) voted for what they thought being the most effective instead.

Good for them

They will cry a lot, but we deserve it as imperial player

Anyway, we imps have guts. We don't like ruthless, we can play scum. The harder the victory, the greater the reward!

That would be the betrayal part.

No betrayal. Imperial players trying to get the least restrictive card, thereby trying to beat the system (and not picking the most representative card for the faction) only hurt themselves. There's an irony there...

The Emp wouldn't exactly be no cost either, since it forces you to fly a ship you might not want to fly :)

You expect them to force us into free gunner Luke? That’s what would have happened if they told us they’d be free, lol.

Gunner Luke was never an option to vote on.

didn't you know that FFG does everything they can to make sure that the Empire is always at a disadvantage

meh, you'll still win easily

take TIE swarm and toss Ruthless on a named pilot that doesn't have Elusive. Instant victory

Or, if you're brave, fly this:

Lieutenant Kestal — TIE Aggressor 36
Ruthless 1
Ion Cannon Turret 6
Barrage Rockets 6
Fifth Brother 12
Ship Total: 61
Captain Jonus — TIE Bomber 36
Barrage Rockets 6
Ship Total: 42
Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 28
Barrage Rockets 6
Ship Total: 34
Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 28
Barrage Rockets 6
Ship Total: 34
Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter 23
Ship Total: 23

I'm willing to bet this was added after the voting concluded, as FFG realized the implications of having the first major tournament of the 'new&improved' 2.0 be the TIE swarm invitational.

Even so, I think the Empire comes out ahead. 0 points Ruthlessness means nothing gained nothing lost, while Rebels and Scum still need to take a crew carrier for a crew of questionable value.

I know this isn’t entirely serious, but boy.

This twitter poll thing, which then resulted in “lol the votes on upgrades are free because that makes sense”, along with the announcement that the standard format is apparently “whatever gimmick we feel like at the time”, has got me really nervous about organized play in 2.0.

Chill...

FFG OP obviously had to solve this as the Empire was very much favoured if the upgrades were costed normally.

If Palp had been chosen this hadn’t happened.

Maximum Ruthlessness.

I've actually been considering a similar squad for normal use - The three Black Squadron Pilots (Mauler Mithel, Wampa and Valen Rudor), 4 Black Squadron Aces, and Ruthlessness in every talent slot going. I figure being able to fly out of formation means Howlrunner or Iden is less important.

Obviously Imperials are not used to having the right to vote.

This is FFGs fault for not including a meme option for Empire.

Really, Scum is the big loser here - no Boba Fett pilot, only crew. And the Rebs get one or two uses of Leia in a game, max. Ruthlessness can work throughout the game. Get your blockers in there to guarantee hits - they're just meat for the grinder anyway (TIEs are the Doritos of Star Wars: crunch all you want, we'll make more). In a way, this guarantees the Imps fly swarms, which is awesome.

Serves you right for voting with your cold, calculating, imperial hearts instead of voting for FLAVAH.

Why do people assume imperial players united in this effort? A single guy could have accomplished this. I didn’t vote at all but I sure as **** wouldn’t have voted for ruthlessness. FFG failed hard making an unrestricted voting option like twitter their vehicle for this choice. Honestly if what they wanted was a fair vote, paper ballot the day before the event would be closer to democracy. Each participant gets one vote. I really love how people attack imperial players because of a few outspoken activists/loyalists. Like any other factions broken list players are beacons of fair play and good form.

You mean.....ruthlessly?

To be honest, I do find it the more appropriate option. Fifth Brother is just 'some dude' who appears in two episodes of rebels and then gets killed. Plus, Helicoptersabers are something that doesn't need celebrating. I don't mind Sloane specifically, I just find the Aftermath books too much of a slog to like her as a character.

So in my mind it basically came down to the Emperor or Ruthlessness; and to me, the Emperor is not someone who turns up to a random dogfight in an asteroid belt somewhere. I'd have been happy with either, though.
