Would the XX9 effect allow him to choose 1 crit from the top 4 cards thanks to Dodonna, and then do this again?

Yes. As long as you deal at least two damage cards of course. Also take in mind 3/4 are discarded so when you do it again, you cannot choose amongst those discarded during the first time.

With the number of large ships with Contain being played these days XX-9 is also a good way to push those crits through, especially with Dodonna.

What can you do about youngsters these days? Always rebelling against something!
