Well, it was actually pretty funny. Partly as GRRM wrote a pretty great and slightly humorous/tongue-in-cheek story to go along with the round. It was in the same round that Kvothe (Jaime's present opponent) "defeated" Aslan. It was mostly a reaction that a great number of the voters decided a tournament where a lion and elder god that couldn't die would basically just walk all over everything to the finals was stupid and everyone voted them out.
You should read GRRM's versions of each of Jaime's fights. They're pretty entertaining. You can find them on his live-journal or linked to Jaime's section in each of the brackets.
But yes, it is just a fun "popularity contest" in the end, so don't get your undies all bunchy. :-P

Eh, as RJM said, it's a popularity contest chosen by the fans, and popularity contests are decided by people with more time on their hands than they know what to do with.
Song of Ice and Fire fans have a lot of time on their hands because they're used to waiting 4+ years between books.
Wheel of Time fans have a lot of time on their hands because they don't have to muck about with excessive substance.
