Article: "Qualify for Worlds in Less Than Twelve Parsecs"

By HanScottFirst, in X-Wing

While people are free to not like whatever they choose there’s not a lot of introspection going on here. Your own personal wants and desire don’t necessarily make sense as the primary organizing principle for FFG’s tournament system and World Championship.

I wanted to play in the Super Bowl, but the stupid NFL will only let you play if you happen to be on one of their teams and if your team competes in their season schedule and playoffs.

Its clear they are trying to organize a World Championship that feeds in from their earlier events, brings in players with demonstrated skill at the game and doesn’t cost them a fortune to host. I’m equally sure they are not trying to deliberately marginalize or exclude any geography or individual players. But they have practical considerations as well.

So maybe try to focus on criticisms that apply to this strategy and not just unrealistic personal preferences (i.e. “Now I will never get to go to worlds” or “once again they aren’t hosting this event in Europe.”)

I seem to remember quite a lot of whinging about the overall quality of the competitors at World's for the last 2 years (and probably before that too, I just hadn't started playing) since it was primarily determined by where you lived and whether you could afford to attend.

The whingers wanted some sort of qualification standard and additional funding for people who didn't live in the USA...

So, here are exactly those changes that were asked for. Happiness will ensue, surely...? Ha!

One thing I'm still confused about: will the Coruscant Invitational still exist for October 2019?

I thought the point of the Coruscant Invitational was to have an invited, prestigious event, with lots of space for other X-wing players to come and play and have fun around that main event. If X-wing Worlds still happens in May with all of the other Star Wars games, I can see why they might want to limit it to invitation only. However, limiting Worlds to qualifying players only will not go over well (as seen already) if there isn't a more open event for all players. Just my 2 credits.

Someone should take it upon themselves to track and monitor every xwing player in the world and where they reside on the globe. Denser populations of players would receive weighted bonuses to moving the tournament needle closer to their location. Once all of this information is collected, and posted for peer review, for player approval, the tournament location should be held at this composite spot (Note: should this location fall over a body of water, you will need to procure some sort or portable floating island stable enough to host games. Power will also be needed to charge laptops and tablets for the app, cellular and wifi data will be the responsibility of participants). If on land, simply rent and possibly build a suitable venue for the tournament. This is the preferable way vs the island.

Now that the perfect neutral location has been decided, you will next need to focus on advertising, as well as prizes for the winners. You'll need to set up rounds and brackets as well as procure volunteers or paid employees to manage the games. You'll reserve the right to sell video rights and replays to whatever organization you do choose so that those who do no attend cannot complain they have no way to view this most perfect event (why the **** aren't they here anyhow, amirite?).

Any permits required by local governments (county, state, country, etc) will need to be handled as well.

This will ensure that you really stick to FFG and in no uncertain terms, show them how to do a real tournament. Honestly I'm surprised this hasn't been done already, it seems like less effort that what some do on these forums

I nominate St. Helena: if it was good enough for Napoleon, it can hold a bunch of disgruntled X-wing players safely.
