Gold on characters

By plebeianmaw, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

After seeing some of the House Dayne and Lannister abilites involving gold being placed on characters, I wanted to make sure that I had the rules right.

Gold on characters is not "taxed", or returned to the treasury during the Taxation phase, but it does not count toward Dominance either, correct? Also, Gold on Characters can be spent at any time it is needed as if it were in your Gold Pool, correct?

Correct. Since it is not actually in the gold pool, it is not subject to the restrictions and/or benefits of having gold in your gold pool. It does not get returned to the Treasury in Taxation, nor does it add STR to your Dominance count.

Incorrect. As in the answer above, since the gold is not actually in the gold pool, it is not treated as being in the gold pool. This includes being spent to pay gold costs - which the rules say are paid from your gold pool. Unless a card effect says otherwise, gold on characters cannot be spent.

Look at it this way: why would the Core Set Tywin Lannister have an ability written on his card allowing his gold to be spent "as if it were in the gold pool" if that was a basic rule of the game for gold on characters?

Good point. I noticed that, but passed it off as an early clarification of rules that they eventually decided to leave out on later cards instead of being an exception to the rule. I've seen it so often before in CCGs.. Ah well. Thanks for the Wisdom ktom!
