Was there a Battletech miniatures game at Gencon?

By voltagejim, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Heard there may be a new battletech mini's game coming out and that it was being previewed at Gencon. Can anyone give any info? I saw there were a few battletech games on ebay for $300 and said they came from Gencon. Not sure if the same thing or not.

The new box set was out. Pretty sharp looking minis included. I could get you details pretty easily, but it's likely not too hard to figure out online off Catalyst's webpage.

Also, Iron Wind, as usual, had a few new minis for the convention. Some sort of heavy-lift helicopter-thing caught my eye as it was absolutely massive. Support vehicle capable of lifting assault 'mechs.

Edit: Probably obvious, but... don't be dumb and buy eBay "EXCLUSVE SAILE ZOMG!" listings. Way overpriced.

Haven’t there been, like, 6 new battletech games in recent years?

I assumed Classic Battletech, but you're correct that there's been some spin offs and new box sets. Classic Battletech really hasn't changed much, but the new cores are generally a good buy for the quantity of minis and they change things up on the contents with each release.

My only experience with the Mechwarrior and Battletech universes (I heard they are the same universe, is that correct?) Has been the PS1 game, the xbox mechassault games, and seeing some vids of older Mechwarrior games.

I always though the mechs looked cool as **** and would love to get a mini's board game of that. Which one would you guys reccomend?

Classic battletech...ALWAYS.

Got a link to it? Tried looking it up and there is so much battletech stuff I am absolutley lost.

Is there also a mechwarrior miniatures game? The Timberwolf was always one of the coolest looking mech to me, and sadly I do not think it is in battlech

WizKids had Mechwarrior: Dark Age out for a few years but I IIRC that tanked and they lost the license.

Edit: The Timberwolf is in Battletech. It just depends if the game your playing takes place pre or post Clan Invasion. Games set in the Inner Sphere around 3025 and earlier won't have it. 3030 (Once again an IIRC) and later can depending on faction and GM.

Added Mad Cat info... :)

Timberwolf is in batteltech. But it's called madcat..

So, when we say classic battletech.you can either find a ton of old sourcebooks o line that are still valid or start with whatever the new set is. They are compatable.

Coming from a " grumpy old man" perspective. I recommend starting with a couple key older books. Mostly because I enjoyed the storyline unfolding in order.

So, you can find an old fasa boxed set probably for cheap and the first book you want is 3025 technical readout.

Play that a bit then move to ..uhm..I think it was 3050..when the clans come in. ( that will be the Timberwolves etc.)

It's important because the clan mechs are seriously overpowered compared to the other ones.for an important story reason.

When we say 3025,3050..blah blah blah..its referring to the years in the time line.

But, if you aren't THAT Interested in it. You could just read a timeline on some website to get up to speed on the story and play whatever is the current game.

The only issue with starting with the older printings is that they can get very pricey. Even well worn FASA stuff goes for a premium now.

I'll just mention as well...if you are into pc gaming, the free mechwarrior online that's out now is really very good.

Sure it has a meta you'll need to learn. But it's a really fun game.

Worth quoting because you're not wrong. There's a reason it's one of the most recognizable 'mechs. Definitely one of my favorites as well. I've known a few people to purchase the metal mini of these just because... I've got a custom job myself that was setup for some event a decade ago or so.

Bah. I'm a Periphery Rat anyway. Outworlds Alliance fighter jockey... Or was until the Ravens came.

Camp specs online YouTube channel has several unboxing vids of the new starter sets. Link to one here:

look pretty good, but considering the earlier box set was 24 minis for about the same price, if you can still find a copy of it it will be a better deal. I do like that they are including some custom pilots and alpha strike cards. Doesn't cost them much and adds extra play value.
