Is the cost of entry now lower?

By Lyraeus, in Star Wars: Armada

So thinking about it, with the The Corellian Conflict having about 70% or so of what a player needs beyond ships, is it possible that the game is easier to play now than it was in the past?

This is not to say that the Core set is not useful or decent value, while it is one of the lower amount of value in a Star Wars core set it is still worth more than its base cost (and its on sale a lot). This does come with Luke and Howlrunner, dodonna and tarkin not to mention the objectives and debris obstacles so it is still of value but I dont think its required to buy in now.

Players can pick up CC and some ships, a movement tool and any third party range ruler and voila they can play (could do the same for the debris tokens I guess)

Thoughts? Do you know people who have tried this?

Damage Deck

thats the kicker

Everything else can be found 3rd party one way or another if you look hard enough...

... the total 52 card damage deck, you have to try to eBay , if you’re lucky to find one reasonably, and that can be very Regional particular..

Welp thats my premise shot right between the eyes at execution range

Well with the sames the Core set goes through on other sites, sure its only a $15-20 difference but when you are looking at base costs of the core set not including cardboard, squadrons, and damage deck is what $98 for just the 3 ships the dice and the movement tool, paying 80-85 is pretty reasonable

You missed my point.

Although you can get the rest parted out — the rest you can get, guaranteed, 3rd part alternate, if you look hard enough ...

... obstacles and even a speed 1 movement tool segment set can be just purchased without eBay.

But not a damage deck.

That is the ONE thing you need to official at the moment, even for casuals.... you could share during a game though

I tried to get around buying the core set, but yeah. Basically I bought it for the damage deck and objectives.

Damage decks were all sold out on eBay when I looked.

Ships, squads, all the cards, "terrain", accessories, copies of the rules.

Personally I think the core set is both a good value box, and necessary to pick up the game. Buying everything piecemeal can lead to problems. I think saying "Tarkin is not a good admiral" or "no one flies Victories anymore" is missing the point. You buy the core set to have everything to play, and it does. Makes the game play easy, and as you learn, if you like the game you can worry about getting good cards. Looking at the core set as a veteran player is looking at a set of cards and ship, when you should look at it as access to this game.

I got a 2nd damage deck back in the day for my empire fleet. 20$ on Ebay I believe

“On eBay” ?

I think you're more likely to pick up used sets now as well. I mean people to flex out of games all the time.

But yeah, you pretty much need a core.

This is why I have small shred of hope that if/when they introduce new factions, they introduce them with faction specific starter boxes. Get only what you need to start and some ships and squads for your faction. It seems like it would make the buy in easier.

I take great offense to this disrespect for the Grand Moff, since wave 7 hit with the Sovereign title Tarkin has become one of my favorite commanders. More than once I have gotten a snicker about playing Tarkin only to do some serious damage to my opponent.

I just want faction starters at 60$. Slap a Hammerhead in the Rebels with the rest of the Core set contents and Rebel stuff. Do the same with Imperials adding in an Arquitens. This makes getting to 180 easy and the selected ships added means all of the cards in the core are usable by both factions.

A man after my own heart....

But what IS considered a reasonable price on a damage deck? Or the terrain tokens and other bits for that matter. Asking for a friend... Though seriously, they don't seem common at all on e-bay and all the standard re-sellers are cleared out on most of the core stuff.

Of that I have no doubt. I personally don't think Tarkin is weak, more I'm using it as an example or why people might say the core set is unnecessary

I don't know if that'd be a good move. On the one hand, a pack of Hammerheads would get you the sweet spot of 3 Hammerheads, but on the other hand, having only a single Hammerhead means not getting a lot of a value from it as they get a lot of power from showing up together with titles to go along. Maybe if you also add the Garel title to the starter - or a copy of External Racks?

Currently, I'd argue that the entry cost is a bit higher as the Squadron / Fighter packs are sold out in a lot of places and seem to be in reprint currently - thus resulting in quite high prices by people smelling their chance to get a nice profit themselves.

I would add the title and a copy of Dual Turbolaser Turrets

Squadron packs are sold out? Maybe Imperial 1's and Rogue but I say Rebels 1 and 2 and Imps 2 at the store I was at today (they had about 5 imps 2 or so and only 1 rebs 1)

I can't find imp 1 packs anywhere for less than $50, which more than I'm willing to pay. What I'm doing currently is putting 1 TIE or defender on a stand so I have enough.

Squadron Pack 1 is sold out at a lot of online stores, at least here in Germany and prices on ebay and similar sites are starting to rise pretty quickly. Squadron Pack 2 is still available...but yeah...it's Squadron Pack 2 ;)

What is this squadron pack 1 you speak of? I have seen no such thing....

I think the entry cost is lower, but simply because individuals are selling off their barely used core sets.

Just picked one up for around $40, essentially never used.
