Locations Questions

By Anathemus, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi guys, please help me on this one:

In the marshalling phase, when we buy new locations, can we use those locations bonuses already in that same round?

Let's imagine I drop a location that allows me to kneel it to save 2 dragon coins to buy a character, can I already use it once I drop it, or will that location only be ready in the next turn?

Winterfell castle and those type of locations, I assume it will immediately come into play.

Yes, there is no "summoning sickness" in AGoT. You can use all of the fiefdoms and cards like Great Hall and the Godswood right away. This is the main reason they have the Limited keyword. You may only flip one card over with the Limited keyword during Setup and may only play one card with the Limited keyword each turn thereafter. Otherwise, you could just dump all fiefdoms, etc. into play on the first turn.

Keep in mind that locations with gold bonuses are a little different. Since your gold is counted at the beginning of your turn in Marshalling, any gold bonuses you play during your Marshalling will not be included in the gold count until the next round. For example, you cannot play an Aegon's Garden during your turn in Marshalling and immediately take another gold from the treasury, even though you can pay 1 gold for a Stormland's Fiefdom and immediately kneel the location to lower the cost of the next card you play by 1.

(schrecklich's answer is correct, but I have seen people take the logic of that correct answer for reducers and try to apply it to gold bonuses. There are aspects of timing that are different, though.)

Good point, ktom Also, it makes sense - that's why the fiefdoms cost 1 and the gold bonus locations cost 0. Both have a net cost of 0 for the first turn (since you get the cost of the fiefdom back that turn by using its ability) and then provide 1 gold worth of utility on subsequent turns.

So, on the marshalling phase, can you buy a fiefdoms location and immediately kneel it to save up 1-2 dragon coins and another card with that bonus already in play, (let's say the character card costs 1, I down a fiefdoms card and I kneel it to immediately that character for free )

Yes. schrecklich already said that if you play a Fiefdom for 1 gold, you can immediately kneel it to lower the cost of the next character you play by 1.
