"At the point of a blade" and "unconventional warfare"

By khunkwai, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi All

Bit of a debate in the game the other day.

During the challenge phase the active player paid a gold to change a miitary battle and then wanted to play " at the point of a blade".

We all argued that as the plot card wasn't "being revealed" that the "point of blade" card wouldn't work, and that it could only be used during the Plot phase and only on an actual Military Battle Plot card (not on uncon warfare)

He's not convinced so I thought I'd ask for clarification here :)

tks

Well, it simply comes down to this: what does it mean to reveal a plot card?

Revealing a plot card means to take a plot card from the plot deck and make it your "currently revealed" plot. It does not necessarily have to be during the plot phase (there are many card effects that will let you reveal a plot card), but there does have to be movement from the plot deck to the "currently revealed" state. So no, manipulating the plot later - in this case, by giving it a trait - does not count as "revealing" a new plot card.

This is probably a lot easier to see with trait manipulation of characters. Say that you have an effect that says "Response: after an Army character comes into play, choose and kneel a character with STR 2 or lower." Let's say that in the Dominance phase, I use Old Nan to give Eddard Stark the Army trait. Could I use the Response? I have a character with the Army trait that wasn't available to me before, but nothing actually came into play, did it? Eddard was already in play, so the opportunity to Respond to him coming into play is well past. Giving a card that is already in play a new trait, or an icon, or changing its STR, or manipulating any of its stats once it is in play does not count as playing/putting into play a "new" character.

So you were correct. It's the same deal with plots. "Revealing" a plot is a parallel game mechanic to a character coming into play. Changing the plots characteristics after it has been revealed does not count as "revealing" a new plot because nothing has gained a new status as the "revealed plot" during that particular Response window.

At The Point of the Blade does only work with plots that have the printed Military Battle trait because there are currently no effects that will give a plot a trait within the Response opportunity for revealing to plot.
