Is this 3 ship list any good?

By Jedijones95, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I've just been playing around on a squadron builder and come up with this list and wondered if it be any good or not?

Esege Tuketu — K-Wing 28
Twin Laser Turret 6
Recon Specialist 3
Ship Total: 37
Shara Bey — ARC-170 28
Weapons Engineer 3
Alliance Overhaul 0
Ship Total: 31
Benthic Two-Tubes — U-Wing 24
Sensor Jammer 4
Renegade Refit -2
Recon Specialist 3
Operations Specialist 3
Pivot Wing 0
Ship Total: 32

Don't take this the wrong way, but not really. It always seems fun to share a bunch of tokens around, but it often doesn't amount to that much. It's wiser just to have self-sufficient ships. Consider:

  • Miranda Doni (TLT, C-3PO, Long Range Scanners) 38.
    • This is only 1 point more expensive than Esege, and considerably harder to kill. Long Range Scanners sets up a potential 4-dice Focus/TL attack at range 1, and otherwise her TLTs and C-3PO will keep her plinking away and hard to kill.
    • I left out an otherwise solid Bomblet Generator, since your list didn't run bombs. Swapping C-3PO for Jan Ors, and Ion Projector on Saw for Bomblet Generator would also work well.
  • Norra Wexley (Adaptability, Rey, Flight Assist Astromech, title) 32.
    • Again, only a point more, but she can stack up tokens on Rey, take TLs as her action, and use Flight Assist for positioning. With her rear arc, it won't trigger as much as on an X-Wing, but it's still good. I put in Adaptability over Veteran Instincts here to keep everyone at PS 8.
  • Saw Gerrera (VI, Refit, Collision Detector, Hera Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, Ion Projector, title) 30.
    • Saw, when stressed, will have a reroll and a focus-conversion from his crew, can stall at will, and Ion Projector can mess up other folk's moves. Trap someone against Saw, while Miranda circles like a vulture raining in TLT shots.
    • Meanwhile, Saw's ability can also help out the other ships from time to time. If they're stressed, or once they've taken a few hits, adding a reroll on either of them is great. Miranda getting rerolls on TLT shots can go a long way. Norra frequently wants to use her TL to add a focus result, so her having a reroll from another source is handy. But his reroll ability doesn't really cost him anything, not like the Weapons Engineers and Operations Specialists. It's just pretty much built-in.
    • This is certainly a list you want to run with Debris, rather than Asteroids. Saw can just park himself there and keep blazing away.

But you see how making each ship more self-sufficient probably makes the whole a lot stronger? When you have too many folks whose only goal is to share their actions, no one is really taking advantage of the action economy. Here, there's still solid action economy, but ships are better built to use those extra tokens and actions. The points are directed at strengthening the ships, rather than sharing with others. A bit more selfish, but I think it'd be more potent.

Yeah I can see your point being able to share a load of tokens seems like fun it it doesn't really amount to anything but having the individual ships be more self sufficient is better and they can still work together to pack a punch, thank you I'll keep what you said in mind when I'm squad building ?

Now I want to go contradict myself, since sometimes it's useful to have helper ships. The Sheathipede is great in this way, since it can help a squad, while being fairly cheap itself. A reasonable rule of thumb might be to have the helper being cheaper than the person it's boosting. It won't always be true (Howlrunner, for example), but not a bad thing to keep in mind.
