Counterstrike and Redirection

By deashira, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Can Counterstrike damage be redirected? Counterstrike damage is "uncancellable," but I don't think redirection equates to cancellation. However, I was under the impression that Counterstrike is immediate and cannot be responded to, so the damage assigned by Counterstrike is applied before my opponent has a chance to react. My last opponent insists that Counterstrike damage can be redirected. Is there an official ruling on this?

According to the FAQ, it says that Counterstrike damage is applied as soon as it is assigned, before any other actions can be taken. So I would say that it cannot be redirected.

The only way i can possibly see it being avoided is if there was some continuous effect inherent in the unit or from an attachment that stated something like 'whenever this unit is dealt/assigned damage, cancel / redirect that damage to another unit"

Or if you play redirection card before defensers are declared wich lead to something like "continuous effect inherent to the unit".

So, this came up when my opponent played a Dwarf tactic which redirects the next 2 damage to another unit of his choice in response to my Counterstrike. In reality, this would not be legal, but if he had played that tactic before I declared defenders the damage could be redirected? Of course, I would just have used my Counterstrike on a different unit, but for the sake of understanding the rules, would that be possible?

Yes. If there's an existing game condition that redirects damage, then that does not constitute the playing of an action nor a response to the declaration of defenders. In that case, the damage could be redirected. Otherwise, the attacker's getting a faceful of anguish. llorando.gif

i thought counterstrike damage could be redirected? its not damage cancellation, as the damage goes somewhere.

that's what everyone says.

Counterstrike damage can be redirected, what is at issue is how you do it. There is no opportunity to play an effect in response to Counterstrike, so whatever way you want to redirect the Counterstrike damage, needs to be inherent to the card or an effect already in play.

But <deashira>'s asking if it would be legal if his opponent played it before defenders are declared. And the answer to that question is yes.

No, he would not be able to play that action in response to your Counterstrike as there is no "action" phase. Counterstrike resolves immediately. So, if he wants to use it, he'd had to use it when he declares attackers as Counterstrike triggers as soon as you declare defenders.

That was what I said, I just gave the exact problem in regards to timing so anyone else wandering into this thread a couple days/weeks/months later (assuming this forum ever gets a usable search engine) gets that yes it can be redirected but the important part is how one attempts to do it whether it will be legal or not.

Uh, I was responding to XCoconutMonkey06X. Hence, the quote. Of XCoconutMonkey06X.
