2.0 Chopper Crew

By Greebwahn, in X-Wing

Hello again, folks!

So I was reading the Chopper crew card in 2.0, and I have a weird thought. Now, hear me out - RAW, would he not give an unstressed ship an extra action?

It says: "During the perform action step, you may perform 1 action..."

Now, a ship naturally may perform an action during the perform action step. With Chopper also saying so, it sounds like he grants another action.

The closest support to this which I can find is a parallel textual pattern: Perceptive Co-Pilot. PerCo says "After you perform a focus action, receive one focus token." Now, a ship naturally receives one focus token after performing a focus action. But we all understand this card to mean you get another.

The same pattern holds for Chopper crew.

Thoughts?

Perceptive Copilot triggers after you perform the action, so the focus token is clearly in addition to the one already received. Chopper triggers during the perform action step and does not add an extra action: "During the perform action step, you may perform 1 action, even while stressed." It's not another action; he just allows you to do it while stressed.

Those commas are a little bit awkward (imo Chopper should read "...you may perform 1 action even while stressed") but they don't change the meaning.

I don't get why they didn't just phrase him like "you may perform actions while stressed. If you perform an action while stressed, suffer one damage unless you expose one of your damage cards" if that had been their intention

They wanted to limit that option to the Perform Action step and to only one single action.

Oh, so with Chopper on Heff, you wouldn't get the free action from a bump if he were stressed?

Or with something like Han gunner that says you can perform a red focus.

PS. I know Hans Scum only but you know what I mean.

Check the RUles Reference section on can vs may vs must. Clears it up. Chopper gives you an option to perform 1 action. The core rules give you an option to perform 1 action.

Neither gives you the option to perform MORE than one action, nor does either add to the other.

It's not perhaps the clearest writing but it's correct.

The relevant area of the rules reference should be the section on replacement effects, however to be honest RAW I can't say conclusively that Chopper is a replacement effect. Clearly it should be, but it only says that these abilities use the words "would" and "instead", which Chopper doesn't.

Better wording would have been: During the Perform Action step , when you would perform an action, you may instead perform 1 action, that action even while stressed. After you perform an action while stressed, suffer 1 damage unless you expose 1 of your damage cards.

But if you're stressed, then you wouldn't be performing an action during the Perform Action step.

True, I guess the wording should be more of a "During the perform action step you may perform actions even while stressed. If you do..."

That would change the function of the card by allowing multiple actions.

Soooo...this card is just a mess lol

At least with this one, the intent seems pretty clear, even if the wording isn't.

Yes, true enough! At least its not Rebel Han Gunner lol

Sorry, to bring this up once again.

But honestly I got the same idea today...

Let's compare these cards for a moment please.

You always gain 1 focus token after a focus action... which is pretty much the reason why you perform the action in the first place.

So, of course this card means, that you gain a second focus token from performing only one focus action.

An unstressed ship may always perform 1 action during the perform action step right?

So could this mean...

1. an unstressed ship gets to perform a second action

2. a bumped ship gets to perform one action anyways

Honestly, I don't believe so myself, because Chopper is much too cheap for a card being so very powerful.

But the wording makes my wonder... what do you think?

It's kind of like upgrade cards like Coaxium Hyperfuel or Afterburners. It's not defining what you can normally do, it's defining only what you can do while stressed.

Still, if it was going to be an additional action, I think it would say, "additional." It would probably be formatted in a similar way to Darth Vader.

Beyond that, does anyone really think FFG was trying to publish a version of 1.0 Push the Limit with literally no drawback and an additional advantage on top?

I think you have some argument on point 2, but as you say, Chopper is cheap and action economy should not be.

You are right, I was just not happy with the wording though.
