T-65 PROMO DAMAGE DECK

By Peter13th, in X-Wing

this extra cost thing is interesting. My FLGS owner is pretty open with me about his ordering. Hasn't mentioned any additional cost but did say he would have the decks. Interesting......

Wait - there’s a porno version?

Seems reasonable to me. FFG have devised an opportunity for physical shops to offer a deal to customers to tempt them away from online. If the physical shops don’t want to partake they don’t have to, or they can offer it as an optional extra to customers. I’d buy it.

My owner is very open with me about the ordering process, we have been friends for decades. I informed him last night of this post after having seen there was going to be a charge, have him ask, they will tell him if he asks otherwise nobody is mentioning any cost. He has inquired about the decks many times and been assured he would be getting them, when inquiring about the cost today he was informed. It appears they were going to ship these and answer questions after they appeared on the invoice. I’m sorry but no matter what kind of goggles you put on to try and justify it there is no getting around the fact that this is a very dirty way to handle this. I offered to pay for mine as well as markup last night, as did several others there for game night but he refused. When you figure that the markup isn’t tremendous on these products and then a store owner has to pay for each promo deck and absorb the costs that said decks add to shipping costs it does cut into profits, especially if you are a store that offers discounts to regulars as well as preorders, it all could have been handled above board instead of screwing the brick and mortar stores again. I’m really glad asmodee made the decision to help brick and mortar stores a couple of years ago, because with the decisions they’ve made since I can only imagine how much worse it could be if they weren’t trying to help.

If FFG did this, it is not legal. Just flat-out. (It's also remarkably dumb. It shouldn't -- it really shouldn't -- but that surprises me.)

We've(my X-Wing group) asked the owner of my FLGS and he has checked with his distributor a couple times and they didn't know what he was talking about. Probably time to ask him to check again since we are about a month away from release.

Upgrade Your Damage Deck

It says right there, "talk to your local retailer about getting..." Nothing in there about guaranteeing the promo deck with pre-orders. Now, if the distributors did not communicate the cost to the retailers, then that is a problem. Additionally, FFG is only saying the deck is free when ordering from them, I don't see them saying that it is free from the retailers as well. If my local game store told me it was $2 for the deck, I would say "$2, well worth it."

You should be more precise in your analysis of what is legal, because people from all over the world use these forums. I assure you that this practice is perfectly legal in many areas where X-Wing is sold.

Player Side Solutions to support the flgs offering the promo decks:

Tip the store $2.

Buy something along with your core set.

Send ffg customer support 'Y U Do Dis?' Memes

Yeah, I'm not sure why FFG isn't taking the hit on the preorder damage decks. It's possible they're already taking a hit on the edition change (seems to be the pattern with almost every game system that goes through one), but this gives your average store owner 3 options:

1. Don't buy them, then probably lose preorders or have players complaining because they thought they'd get one

2. Buy them and charge an extra $2 for preorders. The idea of a preorder bonus you have to pay for will probably turn off a lot of people

3. Buy them and just take the hit. Suboptimal, but the best way to keep the preorders and players happy

I'm not going to say F FFG because at least they're putting for some real effort to push people to support their brick and mortars, but announcing a big preorder bonus for ordering at your FLGS and making the stores pay for it is weird.

So, this is being done and NOT being disclosed? Man, that is truly messed up.

The images of the ones given out at gen con have "not for resale" stamped on them. Yeah, I need to have the owner call and ask. And if he's getting charged, I'll also more than happily shell out $2 to cover mine and will encourage others to do the same.

Reminds me of those landscaping companies that auto renew then expect you to pay for the surprise visit.

The promo deck is for those who purchase from a physical store. The porno version is online only. ?

I'm actually really glad FFG is offering a way to get an additional deck. We are a two player household. Everything else is easy to share from one core except the damage deck. I'm more than willing to pay the extra $2 for the extra damage deck if that is what my FFG needs me to do.

A naughty alt art set of each faction for x-wing adult swim? That would cause zero drama.

Where is the Leia damage deck?

Spoke to my local store owner about the promo surcharge and he said that he was given a discounted package option which included set amounts of core sets, each conversion kit, dial covers and dice packs. the promo decks were included in the same quantity as the core sets. so I have no idea if the promos were wrapped up in the price he got or if they were added in. guess he'll see when he gets his invoice.

No, Lando and 3PO.

But that's not how it was presented, was it? My understanding is that FFG said, "Buy a core set from your FLGS, get a promo damage deck." Is that not correct? If that is correct, that's not leaving a purchase choice in the hands of the stores.

Unfortunately, ffg only said they would be free if you bought through ffg.

Inwent back and read read the announcement this morning, and it says “the deck will also be available through your local game store”

available does mot mean free. It’s just a little sketchy that a price was not associated with them.

It doesn't matter what FFG told us (well, it matters, but in an ancillary way). If the stores -- okay, sticklers, those subject to the Uniform Commercial Code -- raise a stink, FFG will have to capitulate.

FFG seems bound and determined to burn through as much consumer goodwill as possible as quickly as possible. It's pretty amazing, after the slap-down WotC got over 4E, to see another game company making the same missteps.

Asmodee is a company in the process of trying to change ownership from one equity firm to the next, it has to show it can pump money from consumers.

2e has done a great job so far showing people will eat it up, they just have to have the sales numbers to back it up and they're golden.

It is was they should do, they're a business and not shy about it.

Seems to be a lot of judging going on here without complete information. Were shops ever told it would be free? Are shops in the habit of ordering things without knowing the price? Is the issue with FFG or the distributors, if there even is an issue?

I didn't mean to revive this in order to be a flame War. After speaking to the rep from my flgs my understanding was they thought it would be free. I offered to pay for it if it came down to that, but they were still trying to fight for those who pre-ordered through them for this reason. Right or wrong, my read was that it would be free if it was ordered through a local game store or FFG. Which is why I personally made the decision not to order it through an online retailer.
