I wonder how long FFG will make conversion kits

By thomedwards, in X-Wing

So I got to wondering about conversion kit availability. If I decide to go Rebels only in the beginning, I wonder what kind of time frame will I have to grab up a conversion kit for Empire or whatever other faction. Will they be a one-run item and if so how much stock will there be when they are released? I'd like to think they will do reprints after supply is out, but at that point they may think "we kept our promise with the kits" and that be that. And if there are reprints, it could be a *long* time before they hit the shelves.

It's all speculation, I get it. Trouble is I don't know if I want to get every faction right in the beginning, but I know that I may want every faction later on and would hate to miss out on the value of the kits because they don't exist anymore. Am I overthinking this?

Just buy it all.

If I had to guess, I would think they'll do reprints of them as long as they're selling, and then once the demand dies off they'll post something on the website saying that they're being end of lifed so get them while you can. I'm planning to get all the conversion kits I need in the first six months or so, a year tops, because I do think they'll stop making them eventually.

And yet, that is exactly the opposite advice when someone complains about the cost of conversion. . .

Not gonna lie I bought all 3 because I have little faith in FFG supporting them for long. That and Boba Fett looks **** and I wanted to be able to play him since Imperial Boba sucked so hard he could unclog a drain.

Okay, say it with me: wait.

I see there’s still a lot of variables here. Unsure if you want to play all factions or not, etc.

I would say go on and buy the conversion kit for your favorite faction and then play with it, and from there decide if you want to delve into the others.

It’s a pretty safe bet the conversion kits will be around for at least the next 6 months after release, which should be plenty of time to pick up the other two.

Send me the money, and I will.

Agreed to this point. One of the big selling points was “you don’t need to play all factions anymore”.

That said, if you are wanting to play them all, the “buy it all” advice is pretty sound.

I would guess the kits are around as long as the 1.0 ship packs are reliably in circulation. Once that starts to cease, maybe 6 months to a year before 2.0 conversion stops. There’s certainly no danger in the next full year of being able to pick them up as funds allow (unless you just don’t want them all, which is cool too).

I am in for 4/5 factions. This is largely because I could convert my existing collection in one kit per faction, and was unwilling to offload a huge faction (ok more like unwilling to go through the effort of piecemealing it out one model at a time). That left the FO and Resistance, so I went for offing the one I had the least number of ships for.

had I possessed less of a 1.0 collection, I’d have been more inclined to downsize to less factions total.

Could that maybe be because it's different advice for different problems?

Or maybe because it was a deliberately facetious answer?

I thought it was "you don't need to buy all factions anymore (for cards)."

I have to admit, if I embraced the "just play your favorite 2 or 3 factions" I'd be out. I have 3 factions, I don't care they are 1.0.

The main reason I will continue with 2.0 is the Prequel stuff. Sheet, in the "Mistakes Were Made" moments of starting this game, I told my wife it would be less expensive because I only needed to be Imperials. Yes, I mostly play Imperials, but I also like dabbling. So I will be collecting all 7, emphasizing 2 or 3, and only be playing 2.0 for 4 out of 7.

I kinda hope I can get conversion kits on sale for Christmas/Black Friday. If not, I will probably only convert FO.

Here's the thing...if you want to play stuff that is going to be re-released later on, you may have to buy the re-release if you want the new content they are going to shove into later waves. I still think that the conversion kits are a good idea, and you can get a metric *** - ton of upgrade cards out of them, but I just know I'm going to be spending money to buy a ship I already own just to get that ONE card that will make up for my lack of skill.

Am I the only guy here with a LGS that gives crazy discounts for launches? I'm getting all the conversions and basically the core for free. Plus they have a points system that provides discounts after you purchase a certain amount. It turns out to be even more cost effective than buying online, at least if you're consistently purchasing products. I saved something like $70 when I got all my Legion stuff.

Regarding the main point here, demand will keep them printing up conversion kits. I'm thinking they're doing a massive initial roll out, so you should likely be OK for a while at least. It's likely they'll have at least one more printing (speculating here, of course), with more if demand persists. I guess that's kind of obvious I suppose, but it seems FFG would want all of their players to convert, as it means more revenue in the long run.

Haha my store never do discounts, RRP all day. Although there's gunna be about 8-10% off Core +conversions kits (honestly it feels like a rather special event tbh). We do pay a premium for a central convenient space.

While not as good as what you have going on, my local store is offering 20% discount for 2E preorders.

I am sure there will be Black Friday sales for everything. You should be good to go then.

and I suppose it’s a fine line distinction between “play all the factions” and “buy all the factions”.

We are both approaching this from opposite ways, and that’s OK: you are buying the new toys for 2.0 and ignoring the conversion for the most part, and I am converting for the most part but ignoring he new if I can. Whatever makes you happy is great! And I sincerely mean that - the game is supposed to be fun.

Yes apparently you are. The LGS choices in my area are full bore msrp, with no loyalty or incentives (and the inventory you order will be late if it’s a preorder, guaranteed).... or go to ffg, for full msrp but at least you can get it on release day (though they’ve sometimes done a “play to midnight” on the eve of a release and the reward is a discount buy of the new shiny)

So I usually buy from ffg if I have to have it ASAP, or online if I can wait.

Very much this. I would buy local if I had a reason to. Shops around here may or may not get things on release day and for preorders especially you’ll be literally laughed at asking if there is a discount. I get 12% off singles and something like 4% off any new product at CSI. I shop where my money is worth more, that’s just plain sense.

I would be able to justify buying from the LGS if I actually spent any time there. I figure if you’re playing there, the msrp premium is a part of paying your rent to use the space.

But 95% of my game time is at friends, family, or my own game room. The last 5% is at ffg for OP events and maybe one other event (like Adepticon was for me this year). I don’t have a “home store” to truly support.

That's what we're getting, which gives you your core set for basically nothing ($2).

I just noticed my initial post made it sound like I was getting it all for nothing - just the core set for $2. 20% off on launches has been awesome. And once you spend $100 on retail stuff they give you more cash off, $10-20 off depending how much money you've spent over $100. And they keep track. Actually, BOTH of the popular local stores have great deals like that. Everyone move to Rochester.

Okay. Just hadn’t worked the math out that far.

The one game store near me that charges MSRP is also one I play at weekly, so I don't mind paying a little extra occasionally. Most of my local game stores offer 10-20% off MSRP on all product, so I usually go to those for more expensive purchases.
