If Character-A attack Character-B with a "multiple attack" Action and the Character-B uses Block, Dodge and/or Parry on the first attack, are the Active Defense bonus dice kept for the following attack(s) too?
Multiple Attacks and Active Defenses
No, it is a one time defense bonus. You need to be careful when you use your active defenses as you might want to have saved it to use against a more powerful attack later.
The only active defense card I have available right now is Counterspell, but I believe the syntax is the same for all of the active defense cards. They state that when you have been declared the target of an attack (ranged attack, spell, melee attack, etc...) action you can use the defense. Now page 39 of the rule book says, "Once the appropriate type of action has been determined by the GM, the character may need to make a check to see whether or not the action succeeds. In simplest terms, a player creates a pool of dice, comprised of dice representing the different factors involved in the action. This could be a combination of many types of dice, and can vary from action to action, situation to situation." Now this isn't very clear, but I take this to mean that once you pick an action, you then build a pool of dice, and this pool (or pools) can vary from action to action. Based on these two statements, I read that, an active defense adds a certain number of dice to the dice pool (or pools) of a specific type of action (the whole action) and not just one check of that action, therefore I say that a multiple attack action would get the extra dice to all checks made as part of that action.
Example: If Awesome Archer-A decided to use the Rapid Shot action against Big Barbarian-B and B decided he needs to block that attack because it might be powerful, which adds 1 misfortune die to the dice pool of the attack ACTION. Since the action of Rapid Shot possibly allows for several shots (lets say 3) to be fired, all 3 of those shots should have the extra black die.
With the rules I have available right now I think is right, I hope this helps.
I agree with BCA. The defense applies to the entire action, regardless of how many individual attacks are part of that action.
that's a good entry. I apply black dice to every blows/shots/strikes from the same attack action. Not doing so would make rapid shot stronger than it is.
