High XP Genesys Characters

By TyrisFlare, in Genesys

So coming from a few SWRPG campaigns where the PCs have had about 1000xp and the game still plays perfectly fine, I am worried that the same will not be true of Genesys. The reason being that there simply aren't as many ways to spend XP, and once you've completed the talent pyramid once it's a measly 75xp to get another tier 5 talent. Compare this to SWRPG where you will usually be spending much more than that, not to mention the XP for actually buying additional specs.

So I guess my question is...has anyone played 1000xp or so characters? Are people insanely bored of progression at that point or does it still work reasonably well?

(I admit, some of this fear is borne out of years of D&D/Pathfinder where interesting characters inevitably out of being fun because the games are so broken at high level).

Mine are probably 500ish but I made Talent trees and launched prior to Genesys by about 3 weeks. I made trees for spells, items, diagrams, sentient items, etc. So they've got a bunch to spend on.

Well, without adding in any additional XP dumps, how well do you think it will scale?

There’s definitely never going to be the same xp ceiling as Star Wars due to the sheer number of talents in Star Wars, and the Force Powers. Add to that the restrictions on Dedication and it’s certainly going to be lower. But the real question is how much homebrew have you added to your setting? If you just use the talents that FFG have released then you will run out of Tier 1 and Tier 2 Talents, eventually everyone feels the same.

At 1000xp you probably only have 6 t5 talents, and a bunch of ranks in your career skills. So I don’t actually think that 1000 would be the limit, 2000? It’s probably run it’s course by then.

Ultimately the Genesys system is at its best when you play through to 4 or 500 then move onto a new campaign, leveraging the diversity of settings to its maximum.

We use the Talents Expanded, so it has all the SWRPG stuff. So I guess that will extend it a little? 1000xp seems like a decent "level 20," I guess.

Yeah GTE will definitely extend it, although it can also break the game if a player decides to focus on one thing, Combat usually.

Heroic Abilities at 1000xp are really broken too. 20 points on one of those means it lasts an entire encounter, and can be used a couple of times a session for the supreme effect. Basically there’s going to be at least on HA active every encounter
