Returning player starting over. What to buy?

By Darkjawa, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

So I got out of the game just before the Jabba's Palace announcement. I've learned the error of my ways and am getting back into the game. I picked up the Core set, Jabba's Palace, Heart of the Empire, Emperor Palpatine and Hera and Chopper.

What should I consider buying next?

the Jawa!

That depends on what format you're looking to play.

And which faction you might be playing if the format is skirmish...

Be playing mostly skirmish. My son loves to play Vader with Force choke. I haven't decided yet if I want to play Rebels or scum.

Welcome Back!

if you want to run Rebels, the 3PO/R2 pack and maybe an alliance smuggler or two should give you enough to make some solid lists. Alliance Rangers have been good, but look like they may be taking a bit of a hit when Tyrants of Lothal (the next expansion) comes out. Han and Chewie’s fixes came in HotE (along with the Vader fix) so they are both going to be upper tier figures (Han>Chewie)

For Scum, still looking at 3PO as a priority pickup. Greedo is Awesome (GIA). Jabba can be good, but also comes with Assassinate which is a staple command card for Hunters. If you want to run IG, you’ll also have to pick up a Jawa to get his fix.

Yeah, what Fightwookies said

For scum you need IG-88, Jawa, 3PO. Maybe Greedo.

For Rebels it's Han, R2, 1-3 Smugglers, 3PO, maybe Rangers, maybe Asokha.

For Empire get an Unshakable card on eBay.

Whatever you do, don't buy Twin Shadows, Hoth or Bespin. Right now, there is no playable figure or card in these packs, except for Negation and maybe the Junk Droid. (For skirmish, campaign is a different story.)

Your next buy should be R2 and 3PO.

For Empire you want Zillo and Rule by Fear. Those two cards define this faction. But they come with figures you don't want.

Is it sad that if you own every set and blister you've spent well over 1k, 867 euro, 750 pounds on a boardgame?

It's worth noting that many of these recommendations describe purchasing certain expansions primarily to get a card here, a card there. Typical FFG bloat crap, frankly.

Are you playing casual, and don't mind printing cards? Buy expansions for the figures you want, and proxy everything else. Are you playing in local tournaments? Check with the TO for your community, see if they're okay with proxies in tournaments. Assuming everyone (including you) are okay with that, it can -greatly- reduce your (re)purchasing costs.

Our community allows proxying of just about everything, with just about the only limitation as having the figures themselves for actual tournaments. And even that is more to avoid any possible confusion ("I forgot that smuggler figure was actually Han!"). And anyone missing something can generally find someone to borrow from for a tournament. So long as I'm TO, it will always be that way.

(I should also emphasize: this post is -not- any sort of attack on any of the other posters here, I'm not intending to criticize anyone for providing the helpful advice that the OP has specifically requested! --I am taking a moment to hop onto a soapbox and criticize FFG's sale policy though, and offering an alternative to buying some of the suggested expansions. ; )

This is a game, meant to be played for fun. No one should have a wallet advantage if it can easily be avoided.

I appreciate all the advice given by all who posted. Personally I'm not a fan of printing stuff offline and using it to play. I like all my stuff to be uniform, but it's a great suggestion for any new/returning player who doesn't mind doing it.

While it may seem suckish for ffg to put good or what players consider "staple" cards in packs with crappy figures, we have to remember that fist and foremost they're a business and need to make money. So what better way to get people to spend money on a figure that may not be good, put a really good card in their pack. Look at X-wing, you had to spend $90 on huge ships you would never play to get cards like Palpatine or C-3PO.
