Will we see cardboard only expansions?

By HolySorcerer, in X-Wing

FFG has confirmed that we will get some form of upgrade kit for the rereleases in the future. There are no details yet, but these will not include any models.

Does this open the door for future cardboard only expansions? I know I’d be first in line for the Maarek Stele expansion, which just adds Stele to every ship he ever flew. Maybe follow that up with the Black Squadron pack, to restore the pilots who got cut to make room for ******* EA Squadron.

What would you guys like to see in a hypothetical cardboard only expansion?

Cardboard only packs is a given, no way to fulfill a shipless upgrade path without doing that. The question is how it would packaged. I’d say the smart money is on multi pack upgrades. It would be a lot of extra packaging costs to ffg if they did single xpacs. I’d love to see tri-wave packs, so wave 1-3, 4-6, etc. I don’t think they’ll do special pilots though, I mean maybe but newbies would be just as salty as old timers at having to double buy.

I think each wave will see 2 small ships per faction or 1 large, with medium not sure if on its own or with a small.

as for card packs, could be a pack per wave for each faction to contain 1 of each release.

i hope and do not think they will group the waves as this will mean players who got the conversion kits will not have full acccess to all the pilots for wave championships and qb tournaments.

I wouldn't count on it man. Star Wars still has loads of ships to offer, and with them now covering THREE eras alongside having brand new content coming out for all the trilogies, you should NOT expect them to be shipless for a VERY, VERY long time. Probably ever.

I would like to see some campaign or scenario packs like they did for Armada. Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is a lot of fun and I hope for something co-op like that, too. Put together some new pilots, make some Quick Build cards and design some related missions for different scenarios. I think that would be great. Probably not very useful for competitive play but I think it would add some fun and different ways to enjoy the game. Would enough people buy something like that?

Pretty sure Aturi Cluster was 100% fan made.

I could easily see this being part of the marketing plan (puts on Evil corporation goggles) old players will get card expansions, but if you want that new shiny ept now, you will have to buy the ship it releases with. I hope to be proven wrong, but it is wierd FFG has not revealed how precisely they are going to tackle this. How many extra card packs until every ship is rereleased and what will the price be?

With seven factions now, each wave will be 14 ships?

That I can see. Scenarios and quick build cards make sense as a natural pairing.

To be honest, a 'corellian conflict' equivalent box makes sense - you can throw out new pilots for existing ships, scenarios, quick builds, terrain obstacles, and generally a fair amount of game-changing stuff in one box. The thing is, given FFG's track record, they're not going to sell anything 'cardboard only' unless it's correllian conflict/ conversion kit money.

So the 'Maarek Stele expansion pack' seems unlikely because there's not enough 'stuff'.

Something that's essentially a 'TIE Fighter' box is more feasible (although also probably unlikely now the Defender's origin has been retconned), giving you all the maarek stele, all the time, but also additional gunboat and interceptor wingman characters and crew from the games, possibly even the unholy nightmare that would be Delta Six.

.

They said they’d do it, but did they promise WHEN :)

Seeing 4 factions that are coming, and two of them have no ships at all (the others have 4 known each), I suspect a large part of what will be coming is bulking up the new factions.

I am predicting that all the “new” manufacturing will go to that for a while. The “reprint” manufacturing will start on the 1.0 ships in 2.0 packaging, and maybe for a while they just put them out with the generic known cards plus the pilots in the conversion box for said ship?

I think that’s the easiest way to make the transition for them - and would remove themselves of having to put out card only packs for a long time (after all, you got your stuff in that conversion kit)

Since we still have no announcements about how or when 1.0 ships will drop in 2.0 boxes, guessing this is most likely until the backlog is caught up for sequel and prequel factions and they’re fleshed out more.

You are correct. But I don't see how that would affect FFG making something like it. I heard (what might have been just a rumor) that the creator of HotAC spoke with FFG about a sell/purchase of the IP but it didn't work out. But nothing could stop FFG from making their own co-op version of the game. Concepts like an AI, variable enemy concentration and ability, and things like that are not protected.

Random booster packs!

Not every faction will be represented in each wave.

probably some waves will be imperial and rebel, then another wave first order and resistance, then another wave of prequel ships. Scum getting fitted in wherever.

By this time next year we should have a very good idea :)

I played several CCGs growing up. After switching to LCGs, I can't imagine ever going back.

I expect the experience would be just as, or more, frustrating with miniatures.

Ooooo, I pulled a Mythic Legendary Soontir Fel! All his three speed maneuvers are green and he has an additional agility!

There was an episode of The Shuttle Tydirium podcast awhile back in which they interviewed Josh Derksen, the creator of HotAC. If I remember correctly, he said he was not really interested in selling it to FFG. But he mentioned that at a game convention he and one of the FFG X-Wing developers (Alex Davy?) struck up a conversation. Apparently FFG really liked HotAC but they thought it was best that it stay in the hands of the creator because he has complete freedom to do what he wants with it with no restrictions. The fear was that if FFG took ownership of it, a commercial product version might not be as good due to potential creative restrictions imposed by FFG, Lucasfilm, or Disney.

Maybe there have been new developments since that interview but that's my understanding of the positions of FFG and the HotAC creator.

A Hera Syndulla pack would be great, or even just make that a Star Wars Rebels pack. Hera, Wedge and Hobbie in A-wings, Hera also in a Y-wing, B-wing (maybe a new cannon in that pack, but probably with the 2e B-wing) and an X-wing. Maybe some other Phoenix squadron pilots as well? There could be decent amount of content there.

I hate to be that guy but he has put some amazing effort into that variant, fans too. The Aturi Cluster thread is a symphany of creativity and fan love. That said, if no one has a patent on it ffg can, and has proven will, steal it if they think it’s profitable. I just hope Josh Derkson patented his concept because he seriously deserves compensation for this masterpiece.

I'd be happy if you were that guy! I am overly impressed by what he and fans have done. I am in NO way encouraging thievery. Plus, I don't think FFG could patent HotAC since it's prior art, but IANAL.

However, I don't believe it would be a violation of law or ethics to create a co-op version of the game. That is what I am hoping for, a co-op version that can be played by a team (or 1 person!) against an AI, that has a campaign/objective/mission feel to it. I am sure there are other games that could be described as such. I mentioned HotAC because it has some of that and is well known. Can not HotAC and some FFG co-op co-exist?

I’m just saying josh deserves credit and possibly monetary (in some form) compensation. I can’t even begin to imagine the man hours he put in that game and ffg basically saying, no we don’t do coop. Josh not only proved there is a valid want for this style of play, I myself prefer coop to 6 rock monty, but he also proved people want it so much they create whole D&D style campaigns for it, complete with monster folio. I just want him to get what he deserves because he has brought a lot of happiness to people who don’t like ffg’s cage match mentality. Honestly, if ffg does a coop campaign, I’d be interested but it’s gonna have to be pretty amazing before I spend money on it when there is a beautiful community incarnation alive and well.

I'm sure they considered this seriously. Like, at the time when they started with 2.0, which got priority - prequel factions next, then epic 2.0 (hopefully). Co-op campaigns with re-designed epic ships, up to seven factions?

Even if they don't (which I think they will), I won't be rebuying ships. I'll just go to online places/friends and get the card stuff that way.

I own multiples of nearly every ship already, I don't need a 3rd/4th/5th/etc...
