Well of Darkness figures in Runebound

By TheStranger, in Runebound

While all the rest of the heroes match between Descent and Runebound (Journeys in the Dark = Basic Runebound+IoD, Altar of Despair=SoAK, Tomb of Ice = Frozen Wastes), the heroes from Descent Well of Darkness are not in any Runebound expansion (they are used in Drakon through). So I was wondering if FFG had any plans to release Runebound hero cards for those 6 characters (and why not Runewars cards as well :) .

If they have any such plans, they sure aren't telling us about it. I think it's a safe bet they'll show up in Runewars at some point, and they may yet make an appearance in Runebound, even though it would seem like they were "passed by."

If FFG doesn't have plans to include them, I'm sure we resourceful fans could do up some homebrew content for them. =)

Chances are they will be in the new big-box expansion that gets revealed at the Terrinoth event.

I doubt they would skip those six figures and then create new ones for the upcoming expansion.

There are already some homebrew versions of these characters for RB over at BGG, but I will be having a go at these for my own use. I even bought a copy of Drakon just to get the minis!

However, being a complete noob in the lands of Terrinoth I wondered if there was any opinion about a general rule of thumb to use when converting characters from Descent to make them usable in a game of Runebound?

Thoughts?

Well they already did exactly that at least once when they released Tomb of Ice/Frozen Wastes in tandem. It's possible that the next time they release an advanced campaign for Descent (which typically includes no figures) they might release these guys for RB in an unrelated expansion, but if they're in a marketing stage where they're looking to release a new expansion for each game around the same time, they're going to need new figures for Descent anyway.

There's no rule of thumb for conversion that I'm familiar with. The two games are different enough mechanically that the only thing that really carries over is the thematic feel of the special ability the hero has. Even that doesn't always line up if you look at other heroes who have been released in both games. I would say just aim to make a balanced Runebound character that at least "kind of feels" like the Descent character. ie: make sure Tethys is a roguish type hero, make sure Nanok is a brutal melee character, etc.

Thanks Steve. I would be interested to see anyone's personal take on them, stats wise etc. Perhaps this could be a forum "project" that might end up being taken on board by the powers that be... you never know!

I'd wait a couple of weeks before you jump into this project. I honestly think these six figures will show up in the big-box Runebound expansion they reveal next weekend.

Those molds are already done...I am about 98% certain they are going to be in this new expansion!

Do we even know for sure there will BE a Runebound expansion at Realms? Last time I checked it was just "an announcement about a new product in the world of Terrinoth." That might be an expansion to one of the three games or it might be an entirely new beast. If there's new information I'm unaware of then that's fine, but if not let's not get carried away. =P

In one week my prophecies will come to pass!

I am 100% sure they will reveal a big-box Runebound expansion there. They even had it on the Terrinoth schedule when they first announced the event. Later, they edited the announcement. As for the figures from Well of Darkness, that is just a guess but a good one. Why would they not use six figures already created? This is FFG we are talking about.

I did versions for many of the cover art heroes last fall, including the 6 from Descent. They are posted at boardgamegeek.com:

Hey Judd

Yes, I had seen your creations over at BGG and that is part of the reason for asking about ideas about conversion. I've only considered the 6 that actually have miniatures ready to go.

How do these Heroes actually play out?

As I said before, that makes good sense as long as there's no new Descent expansion coming out alongside it. That sounds like it might be the case here, so there's a good bet the WoD figures will be around and about. Descent recently got its expansion fix with SoB shortly before Christmas, so you may be on to something there.

Frog! Your prophecies are getting me very excited. Big-box you say?! Well, that would be outstanding.
Do you really think FFG would produce a big-box expansion for Runebound that was not a 3rd edition? I mean for the big-box senario to come true I always thought a 3rd edition would be the only thing that could fill it. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of 'all new' content they could possibly make to fill a big-box.
This 'thing' whatever it is doesn't even exist yet and I'm consider it money already spent.
I really do hope you're right. I love Runebound.

When I say big-box I do not mean Descent Journeys in the Dark size, I mean Runebound board expasnion size like Isle of Dread, Sands of Al Kalim, or Frozen Wastes. Big as in not a card expansion.

Remember we're talking FFG terminology here. "Big box" is the size of the existing RB expansions, "epic box" is the size of Descent core, Runewars, etc.

"Small box" is like the King in Yellow et al for Arkham Horror, incidentally. AFIAK, Runebound is the only game the uses the even-smaller card expansions, I'm not even sure those boxes have an official name in FFG-land. =).

I asked this very question at Realms this weekend, and the devs. couldn't remember and thought they already were. Then some loud mouthed moron in the back of the room chimed in that they already are Runebound characters, and the devs were ready to take them at their word. I called them on it, since it was obvious they were confused (had to list off the heroes by name, by expansion was getting me nowhere) and then instead of actually answering the orignal question it got delfected into how they came about the whole idea of sharing characters between RB/Descent, and then dropped entirely. That was the ONE time this whole weekend that I was genuinely and thoroughly disappointed :( .

I just want Hawthorne in Runebound...is that so much to ask really?

You can always make your own hero cards for these guys if you want. You may have to start rolling dice to pick heroes randomly instead of drawing cards, but it'd work just as well.
