Hoth Shield Generator

By Noosart, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I hope you guys don't get bored by all my side projects. For my Battle of Hoth theme I needed a shield generator.

I found one on Shapeways

Because I want this generator in different style (for future projects), I created a silicone mould of this piece.

And using a liquid resin I casted a second model. I must say, it looks really crisp :)

In the mean time I've painted the model in primer, the I will give the model a few gradients using the airbrush.

So, after some primer I sprayed the model from the botom up in a dark gray. Then using a medium gray down the middle and a nice light gray from above.

I also have some DF-9 turrets which I sprayed in the same way

Both models will get some washes and highlighs. The shield generator will get a themed base and some snow on top while the turrets will get a game base with pilot skill and statistics.

I badly wish the generator since long ago, but can't find it at reasonable cost. Feel my envy, my dark envy.

I forgot to make pictures of the shield generator during the last stages. However, I did start making terrain pieces for my Battle of Hoth battle table. In the far you can see Eche Base. That is still in progress, because that grey ball... wel it's just a ball painted grey at this moment. ?

Here are some blast doors for the base

And a couple of more pics.

To do list:

  • Finish a couple of small icebergs that will act as 'astroids'
  • Create bases fot AT-AT, AT-ST, DF-9 turrets, laser dishes and snowspeeders
  • Finish the ion cannon

Looks awesome so far, those turrets are tiny!

I love seeing the progress on this build!

Absolutely love your Battle of Hoth setup! So cinematic!

One could play an epic game of X-wing on there! ?

That sure is possible. The size is 3x6

On the 6th of October I have a scale modelling event which I organize. www.modelbouwdag.nl

Besides the organisation I also demonstrate playing x-wing in combination with scale modelling. And this years setting it's on Hoth.

Two years back I did the battle on Endor from Beasts of War. And in the future I would like to do a raid on a convoy. So then I need a couple of huge ships. Like my tanker and some huge transports. Lots of plans! :)

That sounds cool! I might just stop by, living in the Netherlands myself... Are you planning on making the huge ships yourself, or contemplating buying models?

Together with my friends we already have all the epic ships (well... except for the GR-75). And I'm building the Imperial Tanker from scratch. (I'll bring that WIP with me as well in October). Besides that, yep, I'm planning do build all other models myself, since there are no suitable kits available.

Tomorrow I will be working on Hoth again :) so I'm expecting fresh updates this weekend.

I've installed the doors.

Using pva glue and some snow on top, the doors blend in very neatly.

The rest of the ice bergs are now all flocked with snow and I'm working on the base templates. Tomorrow I need to start on the ion canon.

This weekend I created the base templates. Unfortunately I found out I made a mistake with the firing arcs. Only the one from the snowspeeder is correct.

You can see that the Blue Sqd template is smaller (since it has to fit on a regular X-Wing base) and therefor the firing arc lines, originating from the center, make a different angle towards the template's corner.

I will redo the templates, but that will be after my scale modeling event, since I'm running out of time ?

Quiz... what is it that I am creating here? And what have I used as 'main ingredient'? ?

(hint: the syringe is not part of the object)

Is it the Tip of the Ion Cannon?

I think I can see a part of a pen as well.

Edited by RedLeader23

Yes, you are right in both cases. At this stage 95% of the cannon was made up of a single ballpoint pen.

Next up where the pannels surrounding the cannon. I used a bit of artistic freedom here :)

And then put everything together.

Now the race against the clock is on, because it still needs a bit of paint too... before friday ?

Past weekend I was enjoying our own scale modeling event (Netherlands) and showed my X-Wing table to the public.

Unfortunately, the pictures aren't great, but this is how it looked.

And to show you all that it was buzzing with people :)

Now it's time to focus my attention back on the Imperial Tanker.
