Simple clarification regarding the Pit Fighter and his/her ability

By jmoodie2, in WFRP Rules Questions

The pit fighter gains a fortune die when in an engagement with more than two "combatants."

The question is, what is a combatant? Does that mean any thing in the engagement, including the pit fighter? Including other party members? Or just enemies?

So if a Pit Fighter is engaged with a Goblin and a Squig and a barber-surgeon is also engaged with the enemies, how many "combatants" are there?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Four.

1) Pit Fighter

2) Goblin

3) Squig

4) Barber Surgeon

Now the use of the term "Combatants" is a bit subjective, as are most things in WFRP 3rd. As a GM you must decide what qualifies as a combatant. Does ANYONE qualifiy? Do terrified screaming children qualify? Do pesants with no weapons qualify? Do PC's who don't have any kind of combat skills (Weapon Skill or Balistics Skill) qualify?

If your GM determined that the barber surgeon, who is only in the engagement to patch up the Pit Fighter is NOT a combantant, then there would only be 3 in your example. If the Squig became dossile, or preoccupied gobbling up a steak that the Barber Surgeon thew down to distract it, then it may no longer be considered a combatant, then leaving only 2. First step is to determine what makes a person a combatant, once that is done the rest is straight forward. NOTE in all examples, the Pit Fighter is considered one of the combatants if he is wanting to do harm to someone else in the engagement.

One last thing to point out, if squig was killed, and only the Pit Fighter, the Goblin, and the Barber Surgeon were left, that would still be 3 combatants, and since 3 > 2 the Pit Fighter would still get his bounus Fortune Die, at least this is how I would read it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help!

the FAQ says that the participants in the engagement do not need to be enemies, so you can count the guys on your side.
