Discussion Time: Are Uthuk too strong?

What also doesn't help is that Uthuk are fast, silly fast and the current deployments kind of favour that.

Unprepared 100% means a turn 1 charge if the Uthuk player wants it.

Standoff has two peices of terrain which if done currently can really help a Uthuk player scuttle out of and charge on turn 2.

Careful Approach is the worst one out of the three for Uthuk I think but even then, the terrain can be pushed out of the way.

Careful Approach is rough for Uthuk, but that one is out of rotation. We now have Meeting Engagement, where both armies start on the back edge of the field. It doesn't help Uthuk being that far away, but my Waiqar armies generally have things that want to hide* behind a big unit, and Meeting Engagement does NOT help with that.

*E.g. 6-tray Reanimates with Ankaur Maro figure upgrade, Combat Ingenuity Reanimate Archers, or Violent Forces Ankaur Maro unit.

yeeeah , I admit I'm guilty here. I've beaten Uthuk once, and I rationalized that it was just because it was an atypical build. But in truth, it was because I had good deployment and put my brother's forces in a tough position. The other games where I lost may have had more to do wit h my bad positioning than Uthuk's power level. Maybe .

If I'm not mistaken, I lost against you when playing my very first 200-point game with Uthuk Y'llan, which was only my 2nd or 3rd 200-point game ever. I was running a Fear Incarnate list. Is that the game you were thinking of?

Oh, nope. I forgot about that one. Let it be known that I have defeated the Uthuk Y'llan TWICE! (The other was the recent list with just 3 large blocks of Spined Threshers, Flesh Rippers and Berserkers).

I sometimes deploy into what amounts to Careful Approach as Uthuk even when it wasn’t Careful Approach. In particular, I place Berserkers towards the edge of table, Ravos near the center, and the Threshers between them. Rippers placed as needed. With Warsprinter, my Berserkers can get across the table, reform, and start advancing along my opponent’s edge in two turns. Ravos essentially sits still while the threshers do soft turns and hold the middle of the line. With practice, this has gotten fairly smooth.

All the effort is so I can approach from a different than expected direction. Volatile Runes has shredded my army a few times in practice games against Jukey (he figured out he can durdle behind the tokens I place and wait for me while Ravos hurts my own guys), so I needed a new way to do things.

Now it has just become a useful way to approach. The only downside being combat doesn’t start until turns 4-5 in most games. It can help me get a win but does end up making it hard to get runaway 10-1 wins.

The Runecasters at Gencon was on the receiving end of this in game 4.

Just making the point that you can’t rely on a good deployment card against opponents.

Since it was Josh that asked Tony the question, I did specify it was that specific instance.
