IA is and will always be more fun for me. The gameplay, mood and setup is much more enjoyable. I will continue play for years to come. I started playing with my kids and will continue doing so. Legion like Armada are fun but take too long to set up and play to be done with any consistency
I'm a campaign player. There's no campaign play for Legion, at least not yet.
I'm more into Imperial Assault than my group. There's no solo play for Legion. (T-6 days for Jabba's Realm on the Legends of the Alliance.)

Reflects my thoughts very well!
I once bought Armada because I love the epic scale space battle of Star Wars (Return of the Jedi!) But the fact it is a 2-player competitive play as well as the lack of a campaign (at the time I bought it) made me back-off. I sold it and dived into Imperial Assault mainly because of the campaign game mode.
On top of what @a1bert said, if the rebel players are fine with it, the imperial player can bring (as house rules) some DM elements into Imperial Assault campaigns to "enhance game play" (personal opinion). My understanding is that Legion is less flexible on that matter, being a competitive 2-player game.
If you haven't done it yet, you should definitely ask the same question in the Legion forum. It's like asking people on a Baseball forum if they prefer baseball over hockey. Chances are you'll get a lot of pro-baseball answers although you might stumble on some people liking both sports.
As for IA future, there is a box expansion that is expected to hit the store shelves in a near future. There is also a new app campaign to be release in a few days as mentioned by A1bert. And during Gencon's Q&A it was said that more app stuff is on the making. So IA is definitely still on FFG work table despite clearly not being their main focus at the moment.
IA skirmish is the only point of contact between IA and Legion. We aren't talking about a game, we are talking about a mode that born like "an alternative way" to play IA in case you wanted. It's the MOBA of board gaming and it's treated like Cinderella by FFG. Even so, if you take it standalone is a much better game than Legion. Simple as that.
Edited by Golan TrevizeTo be fair, legion dropped of my radar pretty quick once i found out it was a 1 vs 1 competitive system. I played armada for about a year and loved it (even developed a campaign system for it) but our group likes to play narrative stuff, so it kinda of fell by the way once i bought into IA.
It looks great, but it's not something i have any interest in
Legion is a pretty niche product. You have to enjoy assembling models, assembling terrain, and 1v1 open terrain Bolt Action clones.
IA has a much more broad appeal thanks to its 3 game modes. Even if I had room in my closet for a 4th Star Wars minis game, there was nothing going on in Legion that made it feel like it was overtly superior to skirmish. Also open field warfare doesn't feel very OT star wars to me. With the exception of that one penultimate battle, the galactic civil war to me is more about small-scale tight-quarters guerilla warfare, and IA captures that better for me.
Maybe once Clone Wars comes to Legion I might take another look. Legion's combat feels much better suited to the prequel movies. Armada's likely getting replaced soon now that they've jumped the shark with that SSD.
Hands down IA. I love the deckbuilding mechanics mixed with the listbuilding for skirmish (also 4 player skirmish battles are hilarious and awesome fun). And the campaign is fantastic and only better with the App. Best game I have ever played, period.
IA for me. Haven't even touched Legion.
I will say, I'm starting to like a lot of the Legion models, especially the airspeeders and the specialists. And I enjoy seeing battle reports sometimes. It's not a game for me, but it's still undeniably cool.
I like both games!
When you you have the time to commit to an 800 point Legion game, it is very fulfilling. The variable deployment zones and objectives add a nice variety every time you come to the table, and most of the Legion units play well on the table provided you play them to their strengths. (Sorry, Snowspeeder, not you. ? ).
I still spend most of my time playing skirmish IA because I'm wholly invested into it. But Legion is fun and scratches a totally different gaming itch than IA.
Never played Legion and am not really interested in it (2 players only, need a big terrain table, no campaign, no app).
I love IA (has to be my fav board game but I do still like Puerto Rico and Power Grid). I love campaign (I've played as IP and Rebels), love the app (went thru it with my kids), surprisingly LOVE skirmish too (I didn't get it for Skirmish, but tried it and now am hooked... very different feel from campaign), and REALLY love 4 player games too! The one thing I don't love is painting the plastic but I sort of have to because I bought the core set used and half painted... now, whenever I buy new stuff I have to paint it... I'm getting slightly better (but still really suck, and don't have the time or motivation to watch Sorastro's videos and properly learn how... I'll probably start "letting" my kids paint them for me... they would look just as good, and it would give me more time to mess around making silly lists on Tabletopadmiral.) So, choose IA instead of LEGION!! And for the love of God, don't start painting them or you'll have to paint them all.
I've only played IA skirmish. But I can more reliably get a game of Legion in my area than IA.
Both games are different. I like that IA plays quickly but don't like that it has become very wombo-comboy, that you must have a double-attacking powerhouse in your squad to be effective, and that thematic lists are crap. Legion looks good on the table, so far is pretty balanced and thematic, hasn't (yet) been broken by card mechanics, but unfortunately takes a long time to prep and play.
Ya not even the same game. I'm sure it's great but I'll never play Legion. IA skirmish is a hidden gem as far as I'm concerned. People who ACTUALLY play IA know this. I was at Gencon and once again saw a lot of faction diversity, which to me proves the game is great. For those who think the sky is falling, please relax. The game is harder to develop due to it's campaign narrative, which has to be approved by Disney, and because of it's distribution which must please Hasbro. But the game sells which could translate into a better future. Keep buying it and tell FFG it's great. If not, try another forum page.
Hum i see that IA is still very loved.. Lets hope it doesnt end with thrawn now
Still loving campaign for IA - both physical and app driven.
I was going to avoid Legion as I've had my fill of fiddly, tape measure games. However, FFG basically removed *every* issue I had with those games in the past so I've been playing Legion as well. They are completely different styles of game which is why Legion has not "fired" IA in my game closet.
For those that see Legion as only a 1v1 competitive game, I'd take suggest taking a second look at it. I've actually loved the Operations they have published for the game where you have 4 linked games that impact one another. I think it gives a similar campaign "feel" to Legion; almost like a bridge between IA Skirmish and IA campaign. Definitely a way to get some casual SW play in if you only have one other person with which to play.
I also like to describe the differences as IA Campaign is "Luke, Han, Chewie & Leia escaping the Death Star" while Legion Operations are "Luke, Han, Chewie & Leia leading the forces on Endor".
A question to you, have you done same question on Legion forum? Here I'm sure people will tell you IA. On Legion forum people will tell you Legion...

Thank you! Gawd! This is an IA forum. I'm sure Legion is a great game, but I'm not sure why people think they should come here and talk about Legion, nonetheless compare it to IA. I'm even past the point of trashing Legion since we all like what we like. Personally, I think IA is awesome and the best Star Wars gaming value for my money PERIOD. There's still a ton of design space, and the game is super healthy. Campaign is awesome and sells well.

Well I'm not as optimistic as you but I agree it's a great game. I wish we could see some more "innovation" in the following, otherwise this will follow same path of World of Warcraft videogame, another great game that became obsolete in its own greatness.

I'm more optimistic now than I was a year ago. As long as FFG keeps their great relationship with Disney, the game will keep going.
The first thing I saw when I opened up my Tyrants of Lothal box was the FFG catalogue with Legion on the cover ?
I love them both. IA’s great for sitting down with 4-5 buddies every week and getting into a campaign. I like Legion’s 1v1 better than IA’s skirmish but other than the theme they’re really different and have had a lot of fun with the more competitive modes of each.
I have and play both games. IA more on the skirmish side. And actually I've been more of a tabletop gamer than a boardgamer for most of my live. Still I prefer IA. It's just the better, faster and more fun game to play. Especially LoS and positioning are far more easy and precise for IA. I've been to 50+ IA tournaments and never had LoS discussions or an argument about measuring or cover or whatever. I've been to one Legion tournament and had it all. Boardgames are just more precise than Tabletops. IA 4 live. GIA.

I know eh? It's Star Wars. You really can't lose. In saying that, they're both such different games. My Legion core is gathering dust because I found out fast that it's not my cup of tea. IA is my one and only lady, although I'm sure I'll dabble into X-wing 2.0 until it gets ruined. I feel obligated as I was very vocal about it needed a re-boot 2.0 years ago.
As a newbie to both Legion and Imperial Assault (and Armada, I bought all of them at the same time) I’ll say this: each satisfies a different type of gameplay for me.
Legion is great for putting two forces against one another on a grand scale. Imperial Assault is great for playing through a more RPG-esque experience with an overarching story and characters.
I like them both equally I guess.
Though I haven’t tried IA on skirmish which I think is what the OP was getting at.
