Is it really possible to collectjust one faction...

By Porkchop Express, in X-Wing

... as I can't see how anybody wouldn't want all those nice ships revealed at Gen Con.

So far I have promised to restrain myself to:

Rebels

Resistance

Empire

First Order

A small Black Scum based scum force, plus Mining Guild Ties

Separatist droids (adsuming they are coming)

No doubt I will eventually be marketed into buying Clones as well!

"You will take me to Wave 2 ships now"

I'd assume it's possible in 2.0... but I wouldn't know since I'm collecting for 5 factions... and knowing my weak will, soon to be 7....

Joking aside, it looks like they're making it VERY possible to be a single faction buyer. Now, what MIGHT hinder that are the upgrades that you might want RIGHT THE HECK NOW and it's packaged with, for example, a B-Wing and you're SOLELY an Imperial player. You'd either need to bite the bullet and buy that B-Wing or wait a wave or twelve for that particular upgrade to be in an Imperial expansion down the road.

I'm keeping to Scum, but if Separatist ships show themselves to look cool, I'll get into them too...

Well, given that FO is going to revert to the Omega Leader faction whilst Resistance takes a hit with Poe's ability demoted to PTL and Rey having a red rotate action, the sequel stuff needs to have some fun toys to sell their factions. Hopefully the new A Wing can do that. I don't know what the FO can promise, though.

I'm weak-minded I was thinking just Rebellion, Resistance & Scum. Low and behold the Galatic Republic & CIS factions were announced so I now at least getting 5, why not 7. I'm starting to feel like C-3PO the odds I now stick to my 3 faction idea is 3720 to 1.

It's definitely possible to be a single faction buyer (outside of the annoying cross-faction crew and the Moldy Crow).

I'm hoping we will see this become more true over time but it's a little hard to say right now because of a few things outside of the conversion kits.

Only one faction has a turret-upgrade-ship. We'll have to wait and see what turret upgrades other factions receive.

Only one faction has a cannon-upgrade-ship in wave 1. Wave 2 includes another faction that can take a cannon upgrade but we have not yet seen any cannons that come with that pack.

Also, the TIE Advanced Pack does not seem to include Proton Rockets, while the RZ2 A-Wing does appear to have them (please correct me if I'm wrong on this one).

I think the correct statement is going to be that you don't have to buy cross-faction to get most things, and in some cases some factions will have certain upgrades in expacs before other factions will but eventually it will even out.

And if you buy the conversion kits, you're more even than players who only buy expansions.

....technically.... maybe.

But...

....no. Of course not.

I've firmly decided that if I do join in on 2e, that I will strictly only purchase/ play Scum. I rarely ever played Imp or Rebel before and what few ships I don't purge, I'll use for random 1e games.

Easily, I am only semi looking forward to the Scum Falcon. Will get it if I find a fluff way of building a list with it. Don't find any Scum ships, perhaps z-95s aside, fitting to fly with it.

If I make the jump to 2.0 it will probably be Imps and Scum.

I've always been Rebel only. I'm happy to expand to resistance and probably the republic when that drops.

I think once there are seven factions (and even with five), you're going to start seeing fewer people collect every single ship and it'll be more common for new players to limit their purchases to one or two factions.

It's interesting to look at this in terms of where the sweet spot in price/releases is for FFG. If they keep raising price and/or release a lot more ships, you eventually get into Warhammer territory, where it's nearly impossible to buy even multiple factions, much less everything (although there is also a high hobby price in paint, paint accessories, terrain, etc. associated with a game like that). This may be why there are only two factions in Legion right now. Just enough that players can keep collecting it all.

For people like me (and many of you) who have a full X-wing collection, we'll probably keep maintaining this for a while (especially if we don't have to re-buy all the ships once we've paid the conversion price). I get the sense that FFG will expand the game slowly enough to keep people like us able to maintain a full collection.

Two other points - I REALLY REALLY hope they don't charge a subscription for the app. And I hope they keep all the ships in print, as difficult as that may be. I've always thought it was great that (eventually) all the ships were available for purchase even years after their release. I had two or three periods where I stopped buying (or stopped buying every ship) and then went back and filled in gaps because you gotta catch 'em all, right?

I'm still pondering, but I may buy for lists instead of collecting all of a specific faction. Up until now, I've got one of everything (except the Tantive IV), but I don't see that happening with 2.0.

Me too. I realized last night when I was playing with my friend that I have so many ships and crew (palp) that I own but have never used.

Focusing on one faction is what I need to do, and to save a bit of money.

If you were brand new to xwing, maybe it’s possible now in 2.0 to do that.

For most of us, we got hooked on “I want to convert my old ships”... “oh I can sorta do all the things then because the kits cover so much and then it’s only a new ship now and then” and at that point we are now so hooked we want the new factions too.

I am telling myself I wont buy clone wars because I have the others. I don’t know if I will succeed.

i'll prob get all imp, reb, FO, Res, Scum. since I have them all up to wave 14 and can covert them all. We'll see if the two new ones have anything that interest me.

I hear that so far with Legion, FFG has been pretty good at not putting upgrades you need for Expansion #1 in the box for Expansion #2. I'd expect situations like the Autothrusters Expansion with a free Starviper to be a lot more rare.

Personally, the biggest reason I'm interested in, say, Clone Wars ships is because they'd be an alternate source of upgrades. While there will probably be reasonable upgrades in whenever the 2e B-Wing Expansion releases, I don't know that I need another B-Wing, but I don't have any N-1s, so perhaps the new Torpedo upgrade is in there first.

But I say this now. When it comes to the time, there's a reasonable chance I just buy both.

Honestly, I think it's easy to stick to one faction

This may just be the pre-2nd ed hype and that 99% of these ideas will die on the table, but there's SO MUCH to explore even for my particular "**** green dice; need full mods" taste

Can't stop making lists for the three base factions

Hahahahaha I guess I have a comparatively strong will (or low budget).

Even in 1st edition, I only ever bought Rebels and Empire. Never got scum. Steered clear of Resistance and First Order. I love the factions and have all their 1e cards memorized, but I guess I foresaw the split and I’m a sucker for thematic builds anyway. I’ve also never bought anything that hasn’t been confirmed canon (pilots and crew aside).

With all these new factions out, I’m thinking of getting into one more. Probably either FO or Scum. We’ll see based on what Wave 2 has to offer.

Cool to see Clone wars in play, but I’m not going to buy in. Maybe Republic some day, but not for a long time.

I just really like Star Wars starship minis. There are a few I've never even played with but I still got them because...it's Star Wars. A friend of mine is rabid for Mass Effect and he bought a bunch of starship models that cost 3-4 times what we pay for X-Wing models and there wasn't even any gameplay associated with them. So, really, I don't even see th3e point in just playing one faction and I might as well get all the conversion kits just in case I feel like playing some other list. Gameplay-wise, I could probably just get Imperial and be mostly happy (it's what I play most often) but why limit myself?

It also helps that my LGS gives us awesome deals.

yeah, I started buying x-wing due to it looking like a fun game. But I didn't really have anyone to play with. I kept buying x-wing cause the ships were super cool. Now, I have a lot of x-wing stuff...... And several people to play with. :-)

When I was first getting in, I said "I'll never get scum. Too dumb. I hate bounty hunters and all their ilk."

And then I watched Rebels, and saw the Protectorate hit store shelves.

"Just a trio of fangs won't hurt."

Before I knew it, I had 3 fangs, 2 starvipers (but only 1 auto-thrusters) a couple Kihraxz's, Most Wanted... until I realized I had at least one of every ship from ALL factions.

I've since forgone the Resistance Bomber and Kimogila, but otherwise, I like all the ships I have. I know I will be getting all 7 factions eventually. Piecemeal as it may be. At least it won't be every ship.

I think so, but man all the other factions look so tempting. Will focus on Rebel and Resistance with Republic later down the road.

Not only do I not collect anything that isn't Imperial, but I don't collect anything that isn't an Imperial TIE.
