What does Armada’s SSD announcement mean for Epic XWM, if anything?

By weisguy119, in X-Wing Epic Play

FFG’s excuse for not producing anything bigger than a corvette for X-wing Epic Play just went out the window with Armada’s SSD announcement, IMO. People are estimating the model size of the SSD at 30”. If they can make that work in Armada, why can’t we get ships like the Nebulon-B and Arquitens in XWM? I already have customs of both at 19-1/2 inches long that I’m able to make work on a 6x3 mat. These guys are better than I am at making up game stats, since it’s their job and all. Surely, they can go bigger than corvettes and still have playable models. Maybe, Epic 2.0 will make this a reality. And, while we’re at it, design an official campaign. We need a co-op, Epic campaign box. Price point isn’t even an argument for them anymore since the SSD clocks in at $200. Make it happen, FFG! If you knew how much I spent on customs, you’d realize there’s a market for this stuff - a small market, sure, but we exist. Just don’t overproduce the ships and you can make this all work.

They are wrong.

Im here at GenCon, have looked at it it in the display case, it’s no more than 24”. Still bigger, but nowhere near what some people are estimating.

It has also taken FFG more than 2 years to produce such a huge model. The product code for it was skipped that long ago.

Doesnt really invalidate your question, but that’s important stuff to know.

Twenty-four inches is still quite a bit bigger than my two 19-1/2” customs. The size and price invalidate 2 major arguments FFG put forward concerning anything larger than corvettes in XWM. You could possibly fit ships up to Gladiator and Immobilizer 418 size using that kind of sliding scale. I’d buy a $200 Gladiator and Immobilizer in a heartbeat. I’d pay a lot more, actually.

I'm not a huge scale snob, but the SSD is going to look silly on the board. They should have gone with something like the FO dreadnought or whatever their new ISDs are called. Bigger, but not 19 kilometers big.

As long as there are not exclusive standard play cards in any future epic models (like 1.0 Emperor or C3PO), they can make whatever they want for Epic.

Finally. This guy gets it. They said they weren't going to make you cross-purchase things you don't want in XWM 2.0 just for cards that you may want. They could make a Nebulon-B with cards used only in Rebel Epic fleets and an Arquitens with Imperial Epic-only cards. Everybody wins. Standard format players can keep chasing the meta and ignore any new Huge ships and Epic lovers can get more variety in their capital ship fleets.

It's not just length, but width, that makes a model "playable". I could possibly see a Nebulon B as a mega-epic scale ship, but anything larger than a CR90 is going to have to have a narrow profile to work.

Honestly, I'm more excited about the prospect of getting Clone Wars era epic scale ships in X-Wing (mostly 'cause I like how they all look on my shelf).

I'm more concerned with the question:

What does FFG's Prequel announcement mean for Epic XWM?

I'll take anything for Epic, at this point.

Like, maybe, JUST A WHISPER THEY ARE WORKING ON IT.

I'm hyped for the Prequel stuff, but now we have 2 non-existent factions that need work and 2 half-factions that need filling out.

Who the heck is working on Epic???

Bah! You just have to get clever. My custom Nebulon-B has a removable targeting token for the spar section. This allows smaller ships to pass underneath while still allowing the spar to be targeted:

This gallery explains the system: https://imgur.com/a/x8pL

I plan to use the same system for my custom Arquitens. However, with the middle section of an Arquitens being quite a bit larger target than the spar of a Nebulon-B, I’ll compensate with more hull and shields on the bridge (middle) section of the ship. I can justify the added shields and hull by the fact that an Arquitens is a slightly larger ship than a Nebulon-B but has fewer guns. So, it’ll have more defense to compensate the lower offensive output. My Nebulon-B has two 5 dice primary attacks, a tractor beam and 6 hardpoints. With enough energy, it can fire 9 times per round. My Arquitens will have two 5-dice primary attacks and 4 hardpoints., so it can “only” fire 6 times per round. It has other dirty little tricks up its sleeve, though. It’ll be able to launch 3 TIE Interceptors, 2 TIEs, 2 TIE Bombers or 2 TIE Defenders from its hangar. If equipped, It can also deploy Zero-G Troopers and Buzz Droids. Of course, Thrawn and Eli Vanto crew cards will be powerful as well. It’ll be tricky to balance but I want them to be relatively equal mega-capital ships.

The custom Corsec Engineering stands I plan to use for both will allow for 7-1/2 inches of clearance underneath certain sections of the ships to allow for more freedom of movement around them for the rest of the models on the mat.
