Other implications of the GenCon presentation - Armada *NOT* getting Clone Wars factions

By xanderf, in Star Wars: Armada

The slide teasing 'Clone Wars coming to our game systems' showed...

...X-Wing and Legion, only.

And for those, they mentioned this as a teaser - there wasn't going to be any more formal/complete news on them until Christmas. Sooo...late 2019 or 2020 at the earliest for the new Clone War factions to get released in X-Wing and Legion? Makes odds of those factions in Armada rrrrreeeeeeally low.

Now, of course, absence of confirmation is not confirmation of absence. And just because it isn't "soon" doesn't mean "never". AND just because the Clone Wars as a setting isn't coming to Armada (soon, if ever)...does not mean Clone Wars ships wouldn't under the flag of other factions - Venators for the Empire or Munificents for the Rebels or something like that.

But it does tend to suggest (pretty strongly, IMHO) that - at the very least - we aren't getting any new factions set in the Clone Wars for Armada.

Not quite correct. If you watch the Q&A, ya boi Crabbok asked about Clone Wars in Armada, and Andrew Navarro's coy response was something like "that sure would be a big omission." Seems like a pretty clear tease that they're at least trying to make it happen (and as a betting man, I'd say they will).

FFG's history seems to show that they don't like to talk about content more than one to two quarters before it releases. So given the tease and that bit of info, my guess is we'll see Clone Wars stuff Q4 2019/Q1 2020, and that it's already in the works, but they're not ready to talk about it yet. That would also put the reveal at Gencon next year.

Tinfoil hat time, the Holiday season is also a great time to release a new core set as it makes a great gift. I could imagine a new Clone Wars core set alongside a soft reboot to add digital list building a la X-Wing 2.0 maybe with some very minor rules changes, but no big reprint like X-Wing.

The very first question in the QA was @Crabbok asking if the slide confirms is Armada will not receive those factions. The response was intentionally vague. I expect that we will see other factions in the fullness of time, but not within the next two years.

Aaaand I got Ninja'd

Or it could just mean that Armada is getting Clone Wars ships, not factions (whereas X-Wing and Legion are both announced to be getting Clone Wars factions).

I mean...how could they be planning Armada releases out 2 years in advance, when Armada Is Dead (*cough*)

Theres only a limited amount you can read in to these things....

But i would think with the effort they mentioned went into the ssd and the guess that legion and xwing 2 (and now into clone wars) is taking up whatever their production capacity is for the curent forecast.

Ie they could announce it for us but they couldnt schedule it for any reasonable time frame

They may just be waiting to see the reception Clone Wars gets in X-wing and Legion first.

If I had an announcement for something as big as the SSD I wouldn't potentially overshadow it with an announcement for Clone Wars plans. Some of the people on the fence about getting the SSD would pass on it and wait for the Clone Wars stuff. Why sell you one product if I can sell you two. Especially when the risk is as high as stacks of unsold $200 models sitting in a warehouse.

Navarro and the Armada design team have been asked about Clone Wars/Prequel ships before and the responses have always been pretty consistent "not something we're looking at right now." This new response was almost a bright neon sign reading "we want to make this happen."

Yeah, I think its more, they very clearly said that Xwing and Legion are not getting prequel factions. Almost immediately after signalling that xwing is getting first order and resistance factions. Im willing to bet it would be more prequel ships...

This makes sense to me. In xwing, they had a series of ships come out for first order and resistance already, and they do have the ARC170 as well. In Legion, being a more ground combat game, its perfectly reasonable to see a match between republic and empire forces, rebels vs droids, droids vs empire, republic vs rebels...

And they could always release ships and come out with factions later, like they are doing for XWING

Seems like it'd be easier to just add Clone Wars era ships into each GCW faction as older ships, like the Arc-170 in XWing.

I actually don't think it'd be easier - reason being balance. First Order doesn't need to worry about the power implications of Motti, or The resistance with the Rebel version of Ackbar, etc. Gives more flexibility and closes a lot of potential overpowering.

In an ideal world I’d have republic & separatists as factions you can play against empire & rebels if you so wish.

But I also definitely want crossover ships, the Acclamator to be available to the empire for example, where the crossover is appropriate.

They wouldn't have put that much time and effort into the SSD if they thought Armada was dead.

Due to the lack of ships left to put into the game (particularly non-SD empire ships), the Clone Wars is the logical next step.

I think we’ll see them, but not for some time for a few reasons:

1) Armada has a more methodical pace. x-Wing and Legion are games that do waves and releases at a much higher rate than Armada, thus they need those factions sooner.

2) The SSD. With this bad boy announced all we will be seeing I bet before and even after it’s release is HEAVY promotion of it. They want to get their investment back on it and announcing Armada Clone Wars could hold some fans back from buying one.

3) X-Wing and Legion are better test-beds. While I’m sure most people wouldn’t mind prequel factions, FFG does not want to take a chance that they don’t sell well. Introducing them to X-Wing and Legion is a much safer bet because even if they don’t sell well, you risk less due to cheaper models, etc.

As crazy as it might sound, I’d rather see ships from the New Order and the Resistance make it into Armada than Clone Wars stuff. Not a fan of the movies, but I like the ship design.

To me Clone Wars would best be served by them making a seperate game like Dropship for the era. It makes sense to put the stuff in Legion, but (again, personal tastes) the Clone Wars era capital ships are pretty boring.

It's most likely the case that Armada won't be getting prequels in 2018 or 2019. Otherwise, they'd have announced it with the others.

But the response to the Q&A makes it sound like we're getting it in 2020 (I wouldn't promise stuff that far in advance either). Or, that it's coming to Armada in a different way (eg, a second edition, or something) that warrants its own announcement in and of itself next year.

How has the stuff from Rebels done in Imperial Assault? Is there a lot of buzz about the Tyrants of Lothal expansion which is taken right from the show? All of the main characters from Rebels are in that game and Ahsoka and Maul and Hondo also have figures. I'd guess they have a pretty good idea how the animated inspired stuff sells compared to OT stuff.

I know that in Battlefront II there is a lot of call for Clone Wars stuff and the next new content will be prequel based. It seems likely that there will be prequel inspired content for Armada. One of the exciting things about X-wing 2nd for me is FO and Resistance getting split off into their own factions so I can ignore them. Clone Wars and Rebels and old EU content is far more appealing than anything from TFA and TLJ.

They would...

Yup. I remember that. That was a big discussion point for us on what ships we thought would make it into the game.

I'm split on that one. I do like the Republic Star Destroyers with the hanger bay as a split down the middle (though I don't love the weirdly tall towers (imagine what they'd look like in Rebels!!)), but I think most of the CIS ships are ugly. I think I'd prefer First Order Star Destroyers and MC85s.

And of course, Snoke's Mega Star Destoyer! 's only about 3 times the length of the Executor, turned sideways! :D

Good point although I think they'd have information on pre-order levels. Only Ahsoka, Maul, and Hera/Chopper I think are out on shelves. Are the Destiny players asking for more Clone Wars? Were the LCG players?

This seems to me like the right answer, with additional ship cards to help represent any additional factions.

If you think about it, Clone Wars just doesn't have enough warships for the Republic other than they already released. Acclamators, Venators, Dreadnoughts and that's about it. You can make a Republic variant of the Gozanti, the Kitten and the VSD but that would be a really lame expansion.
