Been mauling over an idea in my head that i want to use in my own game and wanted to get input about it from the community.
Basically the idea is a Magic weapon that has different levels of power and you can unlock the different levels by spending xp on it. My thought is that this would make so when ever you wield it you have access to the level equal to what ever xp you have spent on it. So if you have spent enough to get to level 3, every time you use it you have access to its level 3 abilities where someone who had put no points into it would only have access to the level 1 abilities. I figure that it should be 5 xp to level it up to the next level only being able to purchase one level every session, or use the talent system where every level costs 5xp more than the last (ie. 5, 10, 15....). Not sure which of these i like better. I like the idea of weapon that gets better as you use it, in past games i have use the weapon that has been broken into pieces and gets stronger as you reattach the pieces but thought this might be an interesting change.

Description small wooden handle with a white fluffy tail-like part coming out of it. (the wand sprouts another tail for every level above level 1 the player has invested in it. tails turn gold when ninth one sprouts)
Level 1 - downgrade difficulty of all Augment spells cast using this wand by 1 to a minimum of one purple. +1 spell damage
Level 2 - +1 to intelligence. +1 damage to spells (+2 total). Knowledge becomes a career skill
Level 3 - downgrade difficulty of all Curse spells cast using this wand by 1 to a minimum of one purple. +1 spell damage (+3 total)
Level 4 - +1 to presence. +1 damage to spells (+4 total). Charm becomes a career skill
Level 5 - downgrade difficulty of all Conjure spells cast using this wand by 1 to a minimum of one purple. +1 spell damage (+5 total)
Level 6 - +1 to cunning. +1 to spell damage(+6 total). Deception becomes a career skill.
Level 7 - downgrade difficulty of all spells cast using this wand by 1 to a minimum of one purple. +1 spell damage (+7 total) regain one strain if you roll a triumph when casting a spell.
Level 8 - +1 to will power. +1 to spell damage(+8 total). Casting spells costs only 1 strain.
Level 9 - +1 to spell damage(+9 total). When the user casts a spell, as part of the same action, they may cast another copy of the same spell or another spell with no addons. User must pay the additional strain it would cost to cast the spell.(most likely 1 strain.)
This is based off my wives last character who was a kitsune.
Looking for all comments and critiques about this idea so i can workshop it before i give it to my players later this month.
