a few weeks ago i was playing targaryen at a tourney in munich, with quite some success (3rd place), but i thought i was able to improve it a little bit. so this deck was a candidate for the austrian regional.

but then, i dont like to play the same deck in several tourneys. i was looking for something new. the week before our regional i was testing a martell control deck (which has always been my favourite house) and greyjoy rush. both didnt meet my expectations, so the day before i prepared a greyjoy winter deck. never played it before, but since this is quite straight forward, i thought it wouldnt matter that much.

in the end i brought 2 ready-to-play- decks (targaryen and greyjoy) to the tourney and i was still undecided a few minutes before the tourney. my gut feeling told me to play greyjoy, since this is going stronger against lannister. and i was right ...

round 1: playing josef (bara treaty martell)

a match up i feared. i knew his deck, and we both knew that the game would be decided after a few minutes. either he rushes or i lock him down. the first thing happened. he started with the viper and 2 orphans and some 0cost locations. the viper is one of his most important characters. so i started with Valar (though i had 2 characters and no saves). he was surprised but not impressed, cause robert was following, also brienne and some more characters. no chance to control things any longer and at the end of plot 3 victory was josef´s.

we played a re-match, and this time it was the other way round: i was able to make winter in the first round, and then hitting him hard with high claim plots.

round 2: playing gunther (lannister + shadows)

another well-known player (including his deck). i knew i had to play very aggressive before he starts to lock me down with his kneeling effects. i remember that i have chosen a Lannisport Weaponsmith with Seductive Promises, though there has also been some much better character. but it was the right decision, cause he never had enough gold to start with Shadows effectively. Icy Fishermen are great!

rounds 3: playing gerald (lannister)

gerald didnt play that much recently and he finished his decks jsut a few minutes before the tourney with the help of lanzes. but it was a very good deck and gerald is a very goo dplayer even though lacking experience. it was a very hard struggle all the game. i had a good start and was able to play my winter stuff. alas i didnt get and additional draw. he did and in the mid-game he was able to play some nasty events (distraction, you got the wrong dwarf, insidious ways), which brought him back and made me stop at 14 power. we both had not played valar yet. i was lacking any saves. i was hoping its not in his deck, but it was. and one plot later i HAD to play my valar. which was very bad leaving me always between 12 and 14 powers somehow. at this moment i was regretting the decision to take out Winter Festival and adding Ruled by Decree. game would have been over so easily.

time was called and we both had 14 powers at the end of the last plot. this was a very thrilling game and left us both with chances to make it 2 the top4 (though i didnt now it at that moment).

round 4: playing eddi (lannister)

ah well, so its again lannister. unfortunately i cant remember any details o fthis game. eddi played a rather unconventional lannister deck. he claimed that it was put together by kilian, which explains a lot (to those who know kilian, who couldnt come to the tourney in person). the game didnt last very long, cause i had enough time then to talk with lanzes (who rushed thru all of his games and had a flawless 4:0 record) about the chances and probabilities of making the cut.

so after 4 rounds i had 7 points. gleb & gunther (both at 6 TPs) were still playing, and i only needed one of them to win to be sure to make it to the semifinal. gunther pulled it off. as did gerald in his last game against max, and so also made it to the top. gerlad and i had exactly the same result, so we tossed a power counter to decide the pairings.

semifinal:

playing gunther again. i think he was not very happy, cause he knew that greyjoy are no friends of lannister. i had a very good start (6 cards set up). winter from the first round and though gunther kept on playing for some time, his chances to win were dwindling fast. cant remember that much, i have to admit ...

as expected also lanzes made it to the final, though he had to struggle very hard against gerald. it took a very long time to finish, both players were close to victory. every single move could be decisive.

at the end of the game the situation was like this:

gerald (needing 2 more power) had 2 character (tyrion and cersei) and You have killed the wrong dwarf in his hand. lanzes had a lot of characters. gerald knew, he had to win this round, cause he has to play Valar the next (and lanzes had a lot of saves).

there was some discussion now if it is possible to play YHKTWD on a kneeling character ("no" was the ruling). gerald made the one thing he could do and attacked with cersei, hoping lanzes would let her win, but experience&caution in lanzes didnt allow that. valar in the next plot phase sealed this game.

so again i was meeting my buddy lanzes in the final. i expected a tough game, but it was the other way round. what happened was absolutely not worthy of being a final. we both took a mulligan. we both regretted it A LOT. i had a setup of 2 with Winter Armada and Dagmar (i think). i was already starting to give up this game, but then i saw that lanzes also had a very bad set up. so things seemed to be even again.

after drawing up to 7 cards hope was alive at my side. i had samwell and sunset sea. i searched for the winter raven with the first plot, i drew a carrion bird and later also wintertime marauders and i had seductive promises on the hand. lanzes had darkstar and some other minor character, which soon changed over to my side and made darkstar the only target for the military claim. also i was able to control his influence, not allowing any Red Vengeance. since lanzes didnt draw any characters in the next 2 rounds and his locations were leaving one by one, he conceded at plot 3.

this game lasted about 10 minutes. it was a little bit strange afterwards. i didnt feel as a winner at all. there was almost no game in the final, no tension at all, nothing you can be fond of after winning. also some sympathy for anzes, cause he played very strong during the whole event, winning all his games. and just in the final luck completely left him.

nevertheless i was exhausted and looking back i enjoyed the tourney a lot, especially the good company with the other players.

Man, GJ winter is still the deck that I fear the most. Lanni may kneel your characters, but at least they leave you with characters!

yea, i also think greyjoy winter is a good match up against lanni. for example theon KOTS helped me a lot against alchemists guild hall. and when i got rid of the influence (which isnt that difficult), seasick is great.

my greyjoy deck didnt try to kill characters at all means (of course i play valar and some high claim). most important is to keep the income low and get control of the board situation from the very start.

No Support of Harlaw? interesting. i ifnd squeezing the multiple attacks out the Marauders to be to good to pass up. Always one of my favorite atatchments.
