Mel's Miniatures Alien Heads

By Abwehrschlacht, in Painting

Recently I bought some 3D printed Alien heads for the Star War Legion figures I have. There's a bit more information about them on this latest blog post:

They are lovely sculpts but expensive!

These look amazing. Really digging the paint job on those miniatures. Mel does very nice sculpts although some of the full figure miniatures appear a little thin when placed next to a 3 to 4 layer baggy clothed rebel. These look like they were taken straight out of a Star Wars Battlefront game. Once again awesome job on these.

Thank you, I haven't seen his full figures IRL, but I am very happy with these heads. I have been toying with treating myself to his droid collection and the probe droid.

Yes I have seen the droids and really want them as well. Skull Forge Studios makes heads and droids on shapeways. Also check out 4 A Duel Tabletop.

Oh, excellent, thanks for the tips. I will check them out. I just wish 3D printing prices would drop. I am sure they will in the future.

Those avatars make this conversation very confusing.

I don't think the pricing for 3D printing is too bad, honestly. Looking at the detail Mel puts into these sculpts I think it is fair. Also it gives us the opportunity to create an army that has variety and to see our favorite species on the table. I think that is one of the biggest things that I really hoped FFG would have carried over from Imperial Assault. They had a nice variety in every box of that game.

Yep, at first I thought when did I comment on this thread and had to see what I said! Once again I love the sculpts you have created and honestly think that your work is top notch. I wish you much success.

I agree with you about the very nice sculpts, they are terrific. I also agree with the opportunities for having different variety, as I am a bit annoyed that there are only 7 poses for each type of trooper, especially in a skirmish game. I would prefer sprues of figures so you can change thing around, but I understand that Legion falls into the grey area between miniature gaming and board gaming and FFG have a target audience in mind (ie, not model makers...). That said, I do wonder why Shapeways prices are so high as once the sculpt is submitted they don't have a massive amount to do. The work comes from the sculptor really.

Sorry about that Mel, I tried to change my avatar, but the thumbnails are all broken so I just had to guess which one I was choosing! As above, you're culpt are outstanding, now lets see some more Stormtroopers! :)

Changed it now... :)

...wow!....great work!!....them are some REALLY nice crunchies....my imperial armour would truly enjoy to defeat them!...

Thank you, but I'd like to think they'd hold their own in a fight! :D

I picked up the droids and Probe Droid, so you can check mine out when they arrive in the mail!

Mel, I have a question for you. Are there plans for your shop to produce specialized mods or figures that have the correct anatomy for some of the races like Mon Cal, Trandoshan, or Rodians? The heads are great, but the extremities like hand or feet would make the models even better. :)

Yes, I want to make specific alien sets. With each head with a different expression and features, arms and legs.

what level of detail is recommanded ? someone got a comparaison pic
