Can you throw us a bone, on the state of the game? Nothing at Gencon... pretty please with PB&J on top.
FF Please stop ignoring Descent... :(
Has anybody tried to ask them directly what the plan is? I know it's a long shot but the only little bit of information we got out of them about Descent last year was because somebody asked them about it in the Q and A at the In Flight Report.
I really don't expect they have anything encouraging to say at the moment, and the chance has probably already gone, but if anybody's at Gencon right now and in a position to ask, please do!
The Fantasy Flight "In Flight Report" seminar will be in a few hours. Here's to hoping...

Please, somebody ask! I didn't make it to gencon this year.

If they just say (/said) 'we got stuff' or nothing can we send the Farrows round to say hi?
If anyone asks FFG they are going to get the same answer we've gotten 3 times already. "Stay tuned."
At this point I think it's pretty clear that this guy was telling the complete truth .

The 'move over to IA for a crawler' logic isn't sound logic though- if Descent dies there's no way I'd buy into IA to fill the crawler gap- I'm not into SW much let alone enough, it's not Descent in any thematic way whatsoever aside from some overlaps that aren't enough to make it similar enough. IA is I'm sure a great game, but I wouldn't switch to IA to 'replace' a killed off Descent. I don't even think you can fully accurately call IA a dungeon crawler due to its space opera-ish/SW theme- it's not going to tick the boxes of someone seeking a traditional fantasy-setting game.
The other logic may be true but perhaps shouldn't be in the public domain anyway if it's from insider knowledge which has been doubted, (it's only ok as it's more speculative than precise, the kind of things fans have been theorizing on anyway, if it was 'hey this is the next expansion' it very much wouldn't be ok), but too much lack of info from a dev will start the rumour mills turning.
The other logic flaw is IA is always at risk from IP rights anyway- IP non-renewals have harmed a lot of computer and physical games recently, if they're not renewed it's (punnage, sorry) game over for the devs, company and fans. So IA doesn't have a guaranteed future either (no game does, IP or no IP, unfortunately great titles can and do go out of print).
The other point is FFG's thoughts on their games are probably in constant flux- depending on the game's current performance, the ideas of their creatives etc etc, so such dubiously shared 'info' is likely to be quickly out of date anyway- the biggest reason we don't get that much wanted heads up on what's next is it can be as unpredictable for a dev as for the players, even though the dev will be more in the future plans knowledge loop.
The dev might be thinking we'll scrap game A then suddenly something gives it a surge in sales, planning an expansion for game B but people aren't buying what's already available for it all of a sudden, planning something for game C and you lose the IP rights, ....... so the table changes.
The only time it's really disheartening if it's purely a dev lacking faith in a product (such as we'll scrap it, but not realizing it still has loads of potential).
Edited by Watercolour DragonI think FFG need to be very careful if they are thinking of a 3rd edition.
There are so many great dungeon crawlers out nowadays that D3 would have to compete with. D2 I think does okay because it already has its fan-base established who love the game. If D3 comes out, there will be some people who go for it because of their love for D2 but some others avoiding for the same reason. There will be a group of people go for D3 because of a love of the IP.
But the rest, D3 would need to compete with the rest of the market. Would it be good enough for that? I suspect not considering how radically it would need to change to have something "different" that sets it apart.
Sticking with D2 has an established fan base that will buy the stuff anyway regardless. Even better, app content, I suspect, is instant buy because it represents additional value/play from game components you have already bought so many people will become attracted to that.
So I think D3 would be a very risky road to go down.
On a separate slightly related note, if FFG released something digital similar to Valkyrie but official, even if it cost the same as a big box physical set I think people would buy it. A central quest vault online for players to contribute digital adventures to would create a bottomless pit of content that FFG wouldnt even need to be bothering creating. Fans getting excited about adventures mixing up all the tiles from different multiple expansions would be great. Unending content, I really think most fans would pay a lot for that (I havent tried Valkyrie so am unsure how well this already fills that purpose).

Someone shouldn't ask direcly, they will get an answer as always, 'stay tuned' of something like that. Instead someone should start like this:
Its been over 2 years since you released any physical content so we can assume this is dead, there will be no more physical content because that would be strange after 2 years. But for the last 2 years you guys keep saying 'something is coming', or 'stay tuned', so the RtL app would be the most logical explanation, but here we also hear of see nothing.
What would you think this would do with your fans or new customers (since RtL) if they found out you're not bringing anything new to the table? So the reason behind your 'stay tuned' would be a 'pure selling' statement right?
This should be asked, because we already know the answer on the question: Will there be anything coming for D2?
...'stay tuned'...
And by asking it like this you can corner them about a presumably announcement of D3 (which I'm not interested in btw).
Cheers!!
In flight report was on Wednesday? They released huge amounts of news for Armada, Legion and X wing
Yes, it was. FFG continuing their love affair with all things Star Wars. I don't get it myself, but thousands of others do, and it pockets them shed-loads of money, so they'd be fools not to I guess.
Still... Sigh....

I agree with just about everything you say here. None of it really matters now though, since the decisions have definitely been made at this point. They have bet on the Star Wars horse, for good or ill. Time will tell if it was the right call.

Such as? Not sure there is anything like Descent.

Didn't mean there was something exactly like Descent I meant lots of Dungeon Crawl type games (many with specifically different exciting mechanics) whereas there weren't quite as many when Descent2 was born.
Such as Gloomhaven, Kingdom death monster, sword & sorcery, mice & mystics, conan, shadows of brimstone, Warhammer quest (new) , new D&D, orcquest and many others. Keep seeing new ones on kickstarter too.
With so much choice nowadays, a game aiming at a specific type (dungeon crawl) needs to excel or be significantly new/different to stand out. Right now, it's possible a D3 may be able to do that but D2 doesn't quite need to (imho) as it's age means it's got its die hard fans as well as a load of existing content. Hoping a redesign D3 would compete I just think is a bit of a risk that's all.
I certainly wouldn't buy a 3rd edition, 2nd edition was expensive enough to acquire.
It had to end sometimes, but they could have done it with everything being "completed":
- Same amount of classes
- Hybrid classes
- All first edition heroes released in 2nd
- ...
Now it feels uncompleted, a slap in the face of every fan that wanted a completed collection.
Edited by GridashIt surprises me how many people here feel the game is only "complete" when the numbers all even up. For me the game was complete when I got all the expansions that interested me. I don't like the idea of the hobby being reduced to a checklist of products to buy.
Very Glad that they announced nothing about a 3rd edition. **** i am far away from having gone through all the campaigns yet (meaning by that playing each 3 times, RtL included). I just regret that there isn't a RtL campaign for the Mistlands boxes.
I really appreciate Descent 2 as it is.
For the futur i think the only current competitor is GloomHaven, but i think thats mamageable for FFG. Let them time to come with something really interesting. Anyway GloomHaven material (tiles, standees,...) is just crap.
I think that if two Gencons have gone by with nothing then that's it, we're done.
It's a shame because the imperial assault app is a bit fiddly and confusing compared to the much easier to follow enemy orders in Road to Legend!

While I mostly agree with you, I think the feeling of incompletion is a result of it looking like everything was going to be completely rounded out.
One hero and monster pack is great- but then every single 1st edition monster was updated, as well as every 1st edition hero... except 12.
Big boxes had 1 of each hero/class, and the small boxes had alternating sets of 2, and Mists arrives with... no heroes. Chains follows up with new types of classes, but still no heroes.
Is it fair to expect FFG to do more because they already did more than originally expected? No.
The game isn't really incomplete, I agree; however, it does kind of feel like it is.
The gray bar is the same color all the way across- but the colors around sure make it look like one side is darker than the other.

I don't want a third edition (I'm just now getting close to owning everything in 2E) but much like with many FFG lines, I wish they were more a lot more transparent about the state of the game.
As a fan of stuff like IA and Descent, GenCon can be downright depressing when we get nothing year after year.
Honestly there is no reason to become distressed . FFG now clearly stated that their homebrewed fantasy universe is Terrinoth and that Descent is the amiral vessel of that universe. For the time being we see that games in that universe are still released : RuneWars mini, Dragonhold, Heroes of Terrinoth, Realms of Terrinoth (which everybody should acquire for the lore in it). So the Universe is clearly expanding if you compare it to some years ago.
We also know that without a buzz around their amiral vessel it is difficult to give some visibility to that universe (Terrinoth is not Warhammer). There will be something now that the range of products is more or less complete be sure of that. The question is will it be a run for Runewars the Board Game, Descent or both .
Who would have bet that there would be a 3rd edition for Arkham Horror

Amiral? Are you going for "main" or "primary" there?
There won't be anything for Runewars the board game again. Having two properties competing for attention with the same name (even if they're not quite the same genre) is a really bad idea.
I was on the fence with D2e for a couple of years as I had committed to Armada and dabbled a bit with X-wing. But every time I’d go into my FLGS, I’d keep getting drawn to D2e and, eventually, I took the plunge. Knowing the product was getting a bit stale and possible nearing end of life, I snagged all the expansions, lieutenants, and m&h packs and was banking on scenarios being released for RtL. I must admit that I’m a bit shocked FFG hasn’t capitalized on using RtL to sell more scenarios/campaigns. I suspect they don’t have the resources dedicated to writing worthwhile content for the app, but still, it seems like a bit of a let down and a missed opportunity. They could have easily converted all the boxed set scenarios/campaigns into a digital co-op format for RtL, charged a bit of money, and made a decent profit.
I’d have a hard time committing to a 3rd edition to be honest and they charge a bit much for upgrade packs.

That's what is really sad about the RtL situation. The built the very functional framework, they added quite a bit of content for free, and at it's peak it seems as if they decided to abandon app development.
RtL would have been a great platform to sell content. I'd be happy to buy new campaigns, more side missions, or even things like random event packs, new monster activations and additional perils. The pricing of the paid content has been reasonable (disregaring Trials of Frostgate which just isn't very interesting from a gameplay perspective), and since a lot of the content in the app is free, there is no barrier of entrance for the numerous owners of Descent 2E.
It all seems like a massive missed opportunity. And it would be tragic if they decided to stop development because Trials of Frostgate didn't sell well.
