SSD and existing commanders; or why this thing is about to be serious threat to almost any list out there.

By Battlefleet 01 Studios, in Star Wars: Armada

Last night as I basked in joy over finally receiving news of the SSD, my brain of course began to consider how to work it into the game. I first thought of commanders, and amazingly, most commanders that currently exist within Armada actually will work well with this ship. So I've ranked what I thought (based on presumptions alone) will be the best commanders (excluding Piett/Palpatine since we don't know what they do yet) for this absolute unit of a ship.

1) Thrawn - I feel Thrawn will be an amazing admiral for an SSD build because of his three command dials. We know the 400 point SSD has four command dials, and planning commands four turns in advance is quite challenging. Thrawn brings that flexibility.

2) Motti - Motti is almost in my book just as good as Thrawn for the SSD because for a cheap cost, he will give this ship three more hull points, taking it from 22 to 25. If it has the defensive retrofit and you have five points, throw on reinforced blast doors to effectively bring this thing's hull point level to 28. Let that sink in. 28 hull plus all those shields. Good luck killing it in six turns...

3) Moff JJ - Another cheap commander, this one I think will be useful the way he has been to VSDs but on an SSD scale. The SSD can take the damage from his ability much more easily than a VSD, and that extra click may be a big help.

4) Tarkin - Perhaps a surprise to some because of his cost, Tarkin will be very helpful for the SSD in my view. Gaining a command token every turn will, like Thrawn, help your planning and flexibility, making your ship that much more versatile.

5) Vader - Vader would be a good commander for the SSD as the ship have SIX defense tokens, which play nicely into his rerolls. Sidenote: I think you could give this thing an evade if you put Captain Needa on it!

Now, those five are all excellent in my opinion. We venture now into the realm of question mark commanders, as I'm not yet sure how they will interact with the SSD.

6) Ozzel - The only reason Ozzel has made the question mark list is that we don't know the SSD's speed yet. If it is one, as most suspect, than Ozzel is useless to the ship unless you just want a cheap commander and don't care if he doesn't do anything.

7) Sloane - Another question mark, by virtue of the fact that I am unsure how the SSD will operate with squadrons. It's squadron value is rated at five, so clearly it can work to some degree with them but what degree that is remains to be seen.

8 ) Konstantine - Konstantine was almost my last overall commander but I decided to move him up to question mark status as I don't know how many other ships the SSD can fit with. But if, as I suspect, it is as expensive as I think, I don't think he will be very useful.

Heading down further, we've left the question marks for the commanders that I think just won't do anything for the SSD.

9) Screed - Screed in general hasn't really been useful lately and I see little practical application he has aboard the SSD.

10) Tagge - Poor Tagge, bottom of the barrel, but I doubt a ship that has SIX defense tokens needs an ability like Tagge's

So there they are (minus Palpy and Piett of course). Let me know what you think! Are you excited or terrified to be flying or going up against this thing?

Ackbar and Rieekan will be wonderful.

Pin it in place and Angry Bee it to death.

Hammer it with double broadsides.

Choices, choices.

2. Unkown yet I think.

3. Not inside turns.

Are you referring to Motti and JJ? Just a little confused.

Tarkin? One command token Tarkin when you can do the same effect with a Comms Net Gozanti for cheaper?

Comms Net Gozanti could get one-shotted, easily. SSD, not so much.

I am pretty sure it has speed two. When you look at the ship card in the photos you can see the upper part of the manoeuver chart. You can see that about half of it is red and half is grey. Since the chart goes from one to four and red coloured tiles indicate a possible speed I think it is pretty save to assume that it has speed two

Yep
