Western United States Regional at Kublacon information

By Syd, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Here is the basic information for the only Regional Championship west of Chicago. A bit sad for the "left-siders." But, that just means that the Regional Championships at Kublacon will have to be amazing in order to represent the whole western US.

A Game of Thrones Regional Championship (Joust Format)
Saturday May 29
11am-5pm

The Regional Championship is a Joust (head-to-head) format tournament with a series of swiss pairings followed by a cut to top 8 and single elimination. You are welcome to come early, as there will be a number of GMs and Judges doing demos beforehand. You can even borrow a deck for the tournament!

There is a $10 entry fee, which covers the cost to run the tournament and the significant prize support. Prizes include:
Playmats
Trophy board
Uncut card sheets
Large glossy art prints
Expansion sets
Cloisonne pins
…and much more! (details to follow)

In addition, the first 16 players to register for the tournament will receive an exclusive Regional Championship set of power tokens for use in the tournament!

Legal Card Pool: Core Set, Kings of the Sea Expansion, Princes of the South Expansion, Clash of Arms Chapter Pack Cycle (except for banned cards), Time for Ravens Chapter Pack Cycle, King's Landing Chapter Pack Cycle, Defenders of the North Chapter Packs # 1 - 3 and any additional AGoT LCG cards released for retail distribution by 5/22/2010. (thanks Ktom!)

IN ADDITION TO THE MAIN EVENT WE ARE ALSO RUNNING THESE SIDE EVENTS, ALONG WITH THEIR OWN PRIZES!

A Game of Thrones Grand Melee
Sunday May 30
10am-4pm

Description

This tournament will be a multiplayer format event, with a series of 3 rounds consisting of tables of 4 players, followed by a cut to the top 4 Final Table. Come test your diplomacy and cunning against the field in a format where anything can happen!

Legal card pool is the same as for the Regional Championship.

Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place!

A Game of Thrones All-Star Draft
Saturday May 29
6pm-11pm

This will be a Joust (head-to-head) format draft tournament. Each player will be placed at a table with three other competitors for the draft period. Each player receives one “draft pack” which contains basic locations and resources. In addition, each player receives 4-5 custom made packs of 11 cards each. These packs will contain cards from many major sets, both LCG and pre-LCG. Once all cards have been drafted, players have 30 min to build their deck before the start of round one. Draft deckbuilding rules apply. This unique format costs nothing to play, and you don't even need to bring a deck! Come come ready to stretch your ingenuity and deck-building skills!

3-4 rounds of swiss style pairings with a cut to final four, single elimination.

Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

IN ADDITION TO ALL THREE EVENTS BEING HELD AT KUBLACON:

We will also be running the notorious "Maester's Challenge" throughout the entire weekend, during all events. I will let Deathjester give the details on this exciting and fun addition to the play experience of all games. Will you apply yourself and earn the greatest Maester's chain and earn the title of Grand Maester?

Check this post for updated information, or to chat about travel plans, or if you're looking for some space to crash at the cenvention. There are a number of us staying at the convention, and I'm sure we can work out accomodations for anyone willing to come out!

Sweet beans! it's almost here...

Maester’s Challenge

For each field of study below, there is a task and a chain link of a specific color and shape. Players will earn a link for a particular field of study by accomplishing the task (only one link can be earned for each field of study, unless it states otherwise in the task description below). After the melee on Sunday afternoon, the player with the longest chain will be crowned the Grand Maester (tournament points from the entire weekend will be used as a tie breaker if needed). Of course, there will be a cool prize…. Details to follow on that.

So cool...

~you know Chaos probably wears chains all the time already :)

Am I that transparent? ...

I hope you can make it out this year Rings. I owe you one for that beat down in Seattle you gave me. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Some few updates for the Kublacon AGOT Regional in Birlingame, CA (just south of San Francisco).

The prize support package has been purchased, all the events are coming together, and there looks to be a lot of interest! We are shooting for the top attendance Regional this year, and I think we may just pull it off (if Rings can only get himself on that plane!).

Second thing, there needs to be a slight adjustement to the legal card pool. On the original post it showed all chapter packs released before 5/8/2010 as legal. Since our events do not begin until the 29, that actually allows for one extra week. SO, that means if there are ANY chapter packs released ON OR BEFORE 5/22/2010, they will be legal in the events. There may not be a chapter pack released in that window, but in case there is, I want every player to know that they will be able to use them in their decks.

Hope everyone hoping to make it, does! It's gonna be a hell of a good time.

Go Sharks!

What is your current ballpark figure? Just trying to figure out if the NYC joust has a shot and, if its close, whether I should be dragging people by force to the event. lengua.gif

And Bruins!

Good info thanks Syd.

Here is the exact address of the Kublacon:

LOCATION:
Burlingame Hyatt Regency
1333 Bayshore Highway
Burlingame, CA 94010

Also, are you guys going to stay over there or commute back to east bay over the weekend?

@LGR

I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to pull 12-15 people on saturday (with the potential for more). I sent cha0s a text asking for a head count, to which he replied he was going to send out emails this week to the East Bay meta.

@LT

cha0s, Syd, Joey, and I (including any potential guest I may bring up with me) have a room for Friday and Saturday night. We may, or may not, have any extra floor space. I would check with cha0s or Syd on who all is going.

I'm so fired up....

~Oh, 12-15? Is that suppose to impress me? lengua.gif (If it'll help drum up attendance to have cha0s's email say that some NYC meta yahoo is talking smack about expected turnout, by all means have him include it.)

I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll have more people at the June joust than any prior NYC event since I picked up the game (I think this past year's Black Friday with 17 participants is tops during that time) and might get over 20.

lol... yeah 12-15 is a very cautious estimate on my part since I haven't talked with anyone from up in the Bay Area for a while now, and they've all been pretty busy.

Syd knows better than I do, so hopefully his optimism is based in knowing who's planning on going.

I think that 12-15 is a pretty cautious estimate. As the ONLY regional tourny on the West Coast (or even the Western US) we are hoping for a good amount of travellers. Given the popularity of Kublacon in general and it's proximity to the best city in the country (yes that comment is meant to bait you NY boys!), we are also hoping for some surprise attendees.

But here we have it. It suddenly occurs to me that we should perhaps have a friendly wager. East Coast vs. West Coast. We can judge this competition purely on attendees for the Joust, if that works for you NYC guys. So there it is, I am throwing down the gauntlet. Let's see who can drum up the highest numbers. The only two questions left are: 1) Will NYC accept the challenge? 2) What are the stakes? Suggestion: The loser must send the winner their Regional Banners supplied by FFG for the tournamentssigned by all the players? What do you guys think?

Syd

Oooo, interesting. The stakes sound good to me. I see three possibilities: (a) the NYC joust participation vs the Kublacon joust participation, (b) total participants in the two NYC regionals (which are on separate weekends at separate Manhattan venues) vs total participants in the Kublacon joust and melee, or © or total unique participants in the two NYC regionals vs total unique participants in the Kublacon joust and melee. Losing TO bundles up the Regionals banner and their dignity and ships it to the other TO. (I'm only the TO for the joust, but I'm in communication with the TO for the melee -BrooklynMike- and should be able to get a list of participants for determining total unique participants if we go with that format.) Which of the possibilities do you think is the best metric for bragging rights?

Well, I think it would be best to go with the Total # of players in the Joust Championship only. I think you might have a slight advantage if we combined them, only because both of your events are on Saturdays, whereas our Melee is on a Sunday. I'm sure you know how Sunday events can often conflict with travellers needing to get home before monday. So let's just say the total numbers for the Joust events (since both are on a Saturday).

Do the terms sound good to you? I'll get everyone at the tourny to sign the Regional Banner in anticipation, as should you. I am excited!! This will get our meta a little more fired up I think.

Syd

If you confirm that it's all good, I will post something about the showdown in its own thread.

The NYC Melee is actually on a Sunday, but I'll let you and LGR sort the details of this wager. Looks like Long Island has it's fair share of work if NY is going to with this!

~I will hold all of the Long Island wing of the meta responsible if they don't show up in quantity.

Fatmouse is correct about the NYC melee being on a Sunday. But for ease and symmetry, let's go with joust participants. The wager is accepted.

~Make sure you have plenty of fresh Sharpies on hand; I want the players' signatures on your banner to be legible when we receive it.

We totally should go joust v joust - cause it seems the fairest.

Although the whole matchup isn't really fair, being that we are in the Capital of the World and you guys are stuck out there on the Left Coast, but it will be nice hanging your banners and signatures up at our events later on this year and next regional season. Can't thing of anything else that we woudl really want or need from California - oranges maybe?

Too bad, I'll be in Sunnyvale just at that moment but will probably have no time to pass by to play :(

Being the underdogs just fuels the fire. I think we may have to send a consort to SacTown and resurrect the Mafia. It's all happening.

we should have said the cube draft! That got a ton more people last year than the Joust :)

Well, we don't want to embarass our brothers in NY, just beat them handily.

For those of you who also play Warhammer: Invasion LCG, I am running a WH:I tournament Friday night at 7pm

Just wanted to bump the thread to be sure any interested players see the post.

The Regional Championship at Kublacon is quickly approachingless than two weeks away! This is the ONLY Regional Championship in the Western United States. If you call the west home, you gotta make the effort! We have three exciting events planned, all at the amazing Kublacon gaming convention. If you are already going to be there for other games, please come by and check us out...we will be in the Harbor room most of the weekend. If you don't have a deck, no problem! Just post here or send me a private message. We are constructing competitive decks for new/inexperienced/returning veterans to use if they want to play but came otherwise unprepared.

You can check Kublacon's website for a full list of games and events: www.kublacon.com

Hope to see a lot of returning faces. If you are reading this: Khaleesi, Freerider, Kevin, Rings, Mathlete, SacTown en masse, Ram...post here! We want to know if you're coming...or if we need to apply more "pressure" to get you to come.

If you are somebody reading this, wondering if you should come...stop wondering! I can guarantee we will make this a tournament to remember. We welcome new players (we were all there at one point). If you are interested but worried about practice, post here and we will set you up at the con to get some practice games in before the Tournament on Saturday. The organizers are all staying at the Con and will be there Friday/Early Saturday to help get you ready!

Can't wait for KUBLA!!!

Not that I want to speak for Syd or cha0s, but the latest Chapter Pack (A King in the North) will be legal for Kublacon as it was released today.

One week and counting!

Here is the preliminary breakdown of the prizes for the events over the convention weekend:

Regional Championship (Joust)
1st Place: Trophy, Champion's Playmat, Art Print, Uncut Card Sheet, House Pin, invitation letter to World Championships with 1st round bye and reimbursed registration cost for GenCon Indy
2nd Place: Art Print, Uncut Card Sheet
3rd Place: Uncut Card Sheet

Melee Champion
1st Place: Generic Playmat, Art Print, House Pin
2nd Place: Uncut Card Sheet
3rd Place: TBD
4th Place: TBD

Draft Champion
1st Place: Generic Playmat, House Pin
2nd Place: Art Print

There are more prizes being purchased/designed, so this is really just the breakdown of the official FFG released prize support. There will of course be Sansa prizes...I am actually working on a "Brienne" prize as well...for the player that has the best overall win/loss record but could not manage to win any of the three events. Like Brienne, they have the skill, just not the glory.

Can't wait to see everybody at the Con next weekend!
