What is the visual difference between the DH-17 Blaster Pistol and Carbine?

By Mefyrx, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Simple enough, if I google this, both comes out with the exact same picture from multiple sources....

There is even a picture for a DH-17 short carbine meaning the pistol should be obviously shorter....

Stats are different from each books.....as the Pistol is mentioned that Models Includes: BlasTech DH-17 Blaster
Dam = 6

Carbine Dam =8

so they are two different items

You have to use two hands for one of them since it's ranged heavy. There's not really space for it, so it looks suspiciously similar to bracing a pistol with an extra hand, but since it's a carbine it's not the same.

Basically, this is the carbine:

And this is the pistol:

Notice how one has space for a grip at the front and the other one doesn't... you know this is all in reference to a stupid argument from 8 months ago, so I'm going to stop with that now.

Anyway, visually there is extremely little difference between the two. One is possibly a bit heavier or something.

The visual difference is......

Dont think about it too hard, you wont get answers that actually make sense. This way lies madness

:)

This is the carbine.

Well thank you for your input...

Ok, I think I'm getting the point

It feels like people that posted a picture for the Carbine and Pistol are mixing them up with one another which makes it much harder

But when you start looking at the pictures without looking for the name attached to it, you start seing some common trait that differentiate the two

Some have a small scope

Some have a long black metal tube, not sure it its a scope or something else

Some have both the previous items

Some seem a tad longer than the other

One even have it's barrel cut short

Well my guess is that some of those pictures are just wrong...

and the Carbine should have the long black metal tube which makes the gun, at least feels like, longer

and the Pistol should have the small scope onto it which makes the gun, at least feels like, shorter

and all the other ones are deviant art/modded weapon

The card has been created with proper picture

I suspect that truth is simpler than that...

There's only one DH-17 IRL... and since some have held it with two hands, people have assumed it was a carbine and it's been labeled as both...

The DH-17 Carbine's origin is Star Wars Galaxies, the old MMORPG from like what? 2002?. In other words, they recycled the graphic assets and attached a new stat block to it to expand the weapons catalogue without actually needing to use up more time money and hard drive space on a distinct asset.

So.... nothing. The Carbine and Pistol are all but identical and only a star wars person can tell the difference.

For what it's worth I've found the DH-17 carbine stats to be a good stand-in for the DC-15 carbine.

I found this...

Great picture...I think it probably fits better indeed.....maybe I should eventually make use of it ....would be hard to find a picture to work with this one.....will see eventually...

Nice input Ghost....understanding where this comes from and where the issue lied....I remember that game....played it for a while....was nice for what it lasted

Where?

Judging by the AR-15-style stock I'm assuming it's either a fan made prop, or Rogue One.

If it's R1, that's gotta be it.

I agree. There's quite a few instances of misclassification (in my opinion). E11 Carbine designated a Rifle, for example. The DH17 is a pistol in my opinion. The argument of 2-hands vs 1-hand has always been silly to me since even modern handguns are meant to be fired two handed. Yes they CAN be fired 1-hand, but it's still normal practice to use 2.

Often a carbine is just a pistol with a longer barrel and a stock for bracing it (like the E11) , however the major difference is that the carbine has burst shot capabilities

Seems like it's from the weapons they found at Crait in TLJ. So a more modern prop.

Modern prop, but right context for a DH-17 Carbine.

I'd say until some other canon source disproves it, that's it.

Easiest way to explain this oversight is the the pistol and carbine are nearly identical in size but are different in weight and the carbine model extra burst capability means it must be fired as a ranged heavy with two hands to be used effectively.

In actual real life definitions, a Carbine is a Rifle with a shortened barrel and a shortened/removed stock. For real firearms, this translates into slightly less muzzle velocity and long range accuracy.

What it means for energy weapons might be different. Though we can assume barrel length still has some effect on long range accuracy for blasters since long barrels are on long range blasters. So realistically, the difference between a Carbine and a Pistol is just the power of the energy cells and maybe the length of the barrel.

Carbines also tend to have a smaller round then other, "rifles". You don't find many true carbines in the big rifle rounds. It's typically the smaller sized rifle rounds or even pistol ammunition.

Of course that’s not always the case. For example, the stock AR-15 carbine uses the same 5.56 NATO round as the M-16 from which it originated.

5.56 is a "smaller-sized rifle round" comparatively speaking.

Main differenceis the pistols look cool....which is all that matters....

Yeah 7.62 S and 5.56 are the smaller rifle rounds I was talking about.
