W:I Regionals Orlando: Blood in the Sun -- the greatest single event you may not live through

By Overseer Lazarus, in Warhammer Invasion Community

Anyone able to drive, fly, ride, run, or swim to Orlando just gained the chance for an even better life than they were already living. Next Level LAN in O-Town is hosting the most extraordinarily groundbreaking Warhammer: Invasion Regional Championship in the world. Casual and competitive players from all over the U.S. Southeastern Region will journey anxiously to the center of Sunray Kingdom to partake in 1, 2....2 beautiful days (ah, ah, AH!) of Blood in the Sun! Naturally, you'll be a part of the momentous War of Attrition -- where only the most distinguished few will claim victory and earn their rightful place in the Warhammer: Invasion National Tournament in the frozen wastelands of Icepack Kingdom -- but the survivors with the most heart and fire will stagger bloodsoaked and battlescarred into the truly lethal Sinister Side Events, including Vortex (limited, or sealed, tournament), Genocide (race-based combat), and Blitzkrieg (popularly-demanded massively multiplayer action!). Those Heroes who believe they have the mettle to engage in these unique creations should bring with them a single-race "mono" deck (50+-card deck consisting of cards from strictly one race and no neutral cards) & a multiplayer deck that maximizes the group-hosing cards like Hate, Shrine to Nurgle, and Banna of Da Red Sunz (with deck-depletion rules still in effect -- so make 'em big!). For the main event, you'll be allowed an 8-card sideboard. If you're not sure what a sideboard is, just bring all your cards and we'll explain when you get here! Once the war fires have waned from an inferno to a flicker, the endcap event commences with the truly greatest of fanfare...The Battlefield of the Bands!!! 2-4 person groups hit the stage for a war of a different tune -- Rock Band on the Xbox! With amp stacks, mic stands, and giant picture projection, both you and the frenzied spectators will feel like you're in a full-on arena concert. Prizes will be awarded for all events (yes, even The Battlefield of the Bands). Sound too freakishly fun to be anything but a delirium-induced dream? Get this junk. For only 13 bucks cheap, you're signed up for ALL of the non-sealed events. And for only 7 shells more, you can get either a Battle Pack for the sealed event or TWO HOURS of game time on the smoothest and most immersive PC game network in Orlando. Either way you choose, you're getting full product for less than retail cost. Hey, who loves ya, baby? First 8 people in the door and signed up get exclusive Regional Tourney damage & resource tokens, with 8 more sets distributed through a variety of very cool ways and means. The War of Attrition Champion gets a wardaddy Regional Champ trophy capitol board and the Runner-Up scores a can't-get-this-anywhere-else playmat that'll have your opponents acting like they couldn't care less, all the while waiting for you to turn your head for 3 seconds and they're out the door like Kevin Smith on buffet night at the bingo hallpartido_risa.gif. Doors open at 8:30a.m. and registration ends at 9:30a on Saturday, May 15th, with side events running throughout the weekend. The dates had to be shifted one week back from the listing on the venue announcements, but that just gives us another week to make the whole thing sicker fo' ya. And for those travelling from lands far and wide, don't forget that Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure and The Mouse House (Disney) are mere minutes down the highway from us. So even if you get bounced early, you get to bring video back to all your friends of you screaming your fool head off on the Hulk coaster and Duelling Dragonsdemonio.gif! Give us a yell on this thread and let us know how many you're bringing so we can make sure we whip up enough biscuits!

To Arms......

So is there a normal player base at Next Level LAN? I play at Cool Stuff and was surprised to see TWO regionals scheduled for Orlando, not that I'm complaining. However, if there is THAT much interest in Orlando there must be more players somewhere...

Bump

Laz I am another of the Cool Stuff players. Wouldn't mind checking your place out is there a particular night of the week that you guys play?

Wow, I'm pretty freakin' psyched at about this moment, f' sho'. aplauso.gif Guys, we play all days of the week at Next Level! To be perfectly honest, it's inevitable that we're going to become the local hub for Invasion. Not because we're elite or anything, but for just the opposite reason: we're straight with everybody, whether you have all the cards or you split a Core Set with friends. We dig casual and competitive play, we trade HEAVILY, and we're all about a true community. It just so happens that our Grand Opening is this Saturday, April 10, all day. I'll be running a W:I demo from 2:00 on, but I would be stoked to take a break and run some social games with you. There'll also be others there with their decks. We're on University Blvd. next to the BK near Forsyth, about a football throw away from your store. Turn like you're going to BK, but then turn right into the business complex. Our sign in front has a big, orange X in 'Next'. If you read the whole post, you can see that we're not playing the radio with this Regional jazz. This is absolutely going to set the bar for Invasion tourneys going forward. I've done work for a number of game companies, and I can tell ya: if there's anything I learned to do at Origins, GenCon, and DragonCon, it's run an event. We'd be honored and excited to have both of you and anyone else you know who plays pop by on Saturday, and we'll get to rockin'! If you can't make it at all that day, the best days to catch the bulk of us is on Thurs. and Fri. afternoons/evenings. Make sure you introduce yourselves; the rest of the guys will dig meeting folks from the forum!

Thanks for the invite. My gaming is usually limited to one night a week due to family commitments. I shouldn't have a problem getting free for the tournament since I have advance notice. I am committed to be at Cool Stuff next Wednesday night but the following week I should be free to switch to a Thursday night (April 22nd) to come visit.

Crud. Just found out that both Thurs. and Fri. nights are bad for the store starting in May. We're gonna switch to either Tues. or Sat. I'll let you know as soon as we lock it down. Still, if you can swing by this Sat. for even a little bit, we can meet up and get a couple games in, yeah?

Well if my input means anything then I vote you play Tuesday nights. I rarely get time to game on weekends. Not going to make it by tomorrow but best of luck with the Grand Opening.

Reference the tournament, is the "official regional" on Saturday or Sunday?

The War of Attrition, or Main Event, is on Saturday. Any matches not finished that day (God forbid) will be wrapped up on Sunday, along with the bulk of the side events.

And Tuesday seems to be the most attractive day for me as well. I will definitely keep you posted.

Warhammer: Invasion Fortress @ Next Level LAN update:

Brought 5 new regulars into the fray this past week, and we'll be playing throughout the week, centering on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. This means you, RexGator and Brad! We have Skavenblight Threat back in stock, too. So if you're looking for more and you're in or around Orlando, pop in and snag some!

What time are you playing on Tuesday nights?

We start pulling in around 5pm or so, and go until the last man staggers home around 3 or 4 in the morningbabeo.gif. But if we know in advance, I & some others may be able to get there even earlier.

This Tuesday is not going to work for me but at the moment the 27th looks open. Will let you know closer to then.

Brilliant. We can't wait to meet you and introduce you to the scene. cool.gif

not going to make it tonight either. A little irritated with FFG right now because of the sparse tournament rules and the wholly deficient FAQ. it is really diminishing my desire to pick my cards up. Hopefully they will get on the ball and I will be past this grumpy phase soon.gran_risa.gif

Here's the thing, bruthah. For as much of an irritant the meager floor rules have been for folks, it won't impact us here in O-Town hardly at all. I can personally guarantee a smooth event that follows not only the rules but sound reasoning, due partly to my convention experience and partly to my active participation here in the forums. I'm staying as absolutely current on the pulse of the players as possible, reading all the threads that pertain to tournaments and noting the questions/complaints/compliments that folks post. I implore you to not give up on the game this close to Regionals. Like I said in another tourney thread in here, if you pop by Next Level, even for a short time, we can sync up on what to expect and how to prepare for the Regs. I will never let my players go through a single event that I'm responsible for without doing all that I can to make sure they get answers to all their questions and just flat out have a blastgran_risa.gif. Get back to me as soon as possible so we can figure out a time to meet and go over anything at all that you may need to.

And, incidentally, do you know Brad Harrington, the other Orlandoan who posted on this thread? He says he plays at the same store you do.

Bump, I'm one of the Next Level people and want this to suceed!!

Sorry I have been out of pocket the last few days. Brad and I play together at Cool Stuff on Wednesday nights. I missed last week and willmiss this week as well due to other commitments. Brad usually only has Wednesday night open. He is juggling some stuff to open up his schedule for one of the regionals. I am not "giving" up on the game just taking a breath and hoping that FFG gets some things clarified. Arguing over card interpretation is not a positive play experience for me and some of this stuff is still too loosey goosy for me. I will get over to your shop at some point just not sure if it will be before your tournament date. Also not sure I can commit to your tourney. i already committed to the One at Cool Stuff and not sure I can swing a second Saturday. Sounds like a great event and I am sorry if my posts have been negative.

No worries, bro. You're stating your opinions in a reasonable way, and that's right cool. I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of attention to detail as well, but I sort of intuit the intentions of the poorly worded cards and play accordingly. By this point, I've seen so many card games' development that I just go with what seems to be the intended wording until an official ruling counters me, which hasn't happened yet (thank God).serio.gif

What a shame to hear you may not make our tournament! Between our commitment to the players and the completely one-of-a-kind side events, I can promise you, without hesitation, that this would be the most fun and satisfying tournament that you're likely to play in for a very long time, certainly around here. I'll avoid making direct comparisons, but stores in Orlando haven't really shown a lot of proficiency in running events to this point. That's not to say that won't change sometime in the future, but it's highly unlikely to until they're pushed by someone to step it up. And that's what we aims ta do! Trust me, I'm not downing anyone; I used to play there myself two moves ago when they were in that other building across the parking lot, facing the street. I just hope you guys are able to give us a chance to live up to our word!

If you are out of commission this Wednesday, let Brad know that he can join us and still get some games in. Unless, of course, you have other guys that play there that he can get a game with. We're on University near Forsyth down a few doors from the Burger King. Look for the giant, orange 'X'.
