Midwestern Melee 2010! June 11-13

By Kennon, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Stay tuned for updated info. I just wanted to get this out here so people could be thinking.

Details are forthcoming, but I wanted to say I will be attending this event (considering I live here) and my home will be open to anyone that wants to travel here and would like a free place to stay.

Alright guys, more details to be had. Currently this is the schedule we're looking at:

Friday June 11th, 7:00 pm- Cube Draft and meet-n-greet. Hang out and have a good time.

Saturday June 12th, 12:00 pm- Joust Regional Championship. Several Swiss rounds and then a cut to Top X based on attendance. Reg at 11:00

6:00 pm - Tentative start of Top X and multiplayer Legacy Civil War for entertainment

Sunday, June 13th 11:00 am- Melee Regional Championship. Registration starts at 10:00

We've got some great prizes and ideas here on tap and I don't think anyone will walk away disappointed. We're also looking to have good attendance with roughly 12 local players. Who wants to help match that number with out of towners? We should have ample crash space with Dobbler and others so that no one has to waste money on a hotel room.

Prices and pre-registration are forthcoming after a bit of final tweaking. If all goes well, we should have an option for players to register through the Metagames website with a price break for pre-registration.

Josh told me to check this thread out. Perhaps if AY and I dust ourselves off, we might make the trip. I'd love to, especially if he's driving! Miss all you guys!

For those of you that have never participated in a cube draft before, you will not need to provide any cards for this event. I will be providing all of them. However, it is fairly important for me to know who is planning on attending, as it effects the number of cards that I pull and prepare.

A couple of additional notes on the cube draft:

- We will be using all black bordered cards. We have alot of new players in our meta, and this is a chance for them to get to use some of the older stuff

- Each drafting cube will have only 1x of each card. (Except for the 5 plots that everyone will get. Note that these 5 plots will be different from the 5 plots provided in the old draft packs.)

- There are no banned cards in this environment. If you somehow draft the Gathering Storm, enjoy!

- There will be prizes for this event

Also a reminder, if someone is wanting to travel here and needing a place to stay, please contact me as I have a place where multiple people can crash. Several people have already told me they are staying, so please let me know.

Yeah, Matt, you and AY should totally come down! I'd even offer to loan cards if most of the deckworthy stuff that I have wasn't already claimed. But still, I'm sure something can be figured out. I want to see the Midwestern Melee's 4th? year have the best turnout ever.

This is our 4th year, right?

Ok, we have some prices.

Friday night $5 on site and $3 pre-register

Saturday $10 on site, $7 pre-register

Sunday $10 on site $7 pre-register

Entire weekend: $25 on site, $17 pre-register.

Be on the look out for www.mguinc.com soon for the ability to pre-register for those players that aren't yet down here to do so in person. Once it's up, please do take the chance to pre-register and spend less money as well as giving us a better count on players and a better ability to provide prizes.

Poster coming this evening once I'm out of class.

Here you are folks. Sorry if the legibility is a little poor. The forums won't seem to let me post a PDF the way that I wanted, so a smaller JPG will have to do.

No comments even after I spent all that time slaving over a hot laptop?

I meant to comment earlier on how cool this and other posters/ads have been for these regional events. Nice work Kennon!

I had been slow to open this thread. Great flyer and I don't think I've seen that artwork of Stannis before. Is it from an old CCG card?

So, any info you are willing to spill about the custom prizes? I'm curious what you guys will have. Or are you referring to the FFG regionals kit prizes?

Well I'm not sure what prizes Kennon is bringing but I can tell you about the prizes that I'll be bringing down. Over 700 custom power counters! These will be in sets of 20 and they will be glass beads with backgrounds and a felt bottom. Everyone who signs up for a tourney is guaranteed to get a set of Valar Midwestous power counters, with the Valar Midwestous house shield as designed by Kennon. There will also house counters, icon counters, crest counters, etc to be given away as door prizes. And I think the number of counters might get up close to 1000 if we have the time since it looks like some more people are showing up than anticipated.

Yes, I don't want to spill the beans on everything that I have planned, but Staton is taking care of one of the largest. Custom power counters for every attendee and more given away as door prizes. Thanks to Katie and Josh, every player will walk away with something to remember this event by. But that's not all. I have more custom prizes up my sleeve- some for top finishers, some for door prizes, and that's just on top of the great stuff coming from the FFG kit. Trust me, there will be some fat loot available at this event. Come down and help us make the attendance at this year's Midwestern Melee match the unprecedented (down here at least- I'm not trying to slight ChiCon) level of prize support.

For those still thinking of coming (but having not yet committed):

I have opened up my duplex for those that want to stay. Currently, there are 5 out of towners already planning on staying at my place. We can fit more. I have 4 beds, a sectional couch that sleeps two, and an inflatable mattress. And I have plenty of floor space! And if I get confirmation on several more that want to stay with me during the weekend, I will go purchase several more inflatable mattresses.

I will be providing breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning for those staying at my place.

A custom prize just arrived in the mail today, and whooo boy am I excited!

Here we go guys, pricing is up on the MGU website . Check it out for some more info and browse around the site of the great store that is hosting this event for us.

We were hoping to get some method of pre-registration up online for those of you out of state, but it looks like that idea didn't work this time around. Be sure to call the store though and it looks like they may be able to work something out.

Alrighty, talked to a couple of the guys at the store. Looks like they have a pretty nice division of what prizes are going to which players. Lots of ways to get things and not everything has to be won by the champ. I'll see if I can get one of the store guys to post on here with some info on the prize breakdown.

Also, it has been determined that if we hit 20 participants in the Joust, we will have a cut to final 8. But if we draw 19 or less, we will cut to final four. We had to have the cut somewhere, and we want to announce it now, not wait until the regional itself.

And just for the record, there is a decent chance we hit 20.

Also, I was reading some other posts a moment ago and I thought I should remind people that we are following the "Must have been released for one full week to be tournament legal" rule. So that means that Kings of the North has to be officially out in the States by June 5th to be legal for our Joust.

You mean "Lords of Winter" expansion, Kennon? I have not heard of this "Kings of the North".

Yes, Lords of Winter. I keep mixing that up because I expect it to be Kings like the Greyjoy expansion was.

I will be doing everything in my power to make this event. Staton, Katie, and Dobbler have made it very easy for me to attend and it is still up in the air because I need money and a job. At this moment I will totally be there. I can't wait to see everybody again!

Yeah, dude, it should be a total blast of a weekend.

Also another reminder, decklists are required. Make sure you've either got one filled out ahead of time or that you show up for registration in time to fill one out. We will have sheets available.

After the cube draft on Friday night, it looks like there will be at least 8-10 people staying at my place, if not more. So if you are looking for some last minute practice games to tweak your deck or hone your skills, my place is the place to be. I'm sure we will have some people up until 4-5 am working on decks and playing games.

If you plan on eating breakfast and getting a shower, wakeup call will be around 9 am. We will then leave my place around 11 am to head towards the store.
