If IA ever died.

By Mandalore of the Rings, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

I read this great article a while back and was thinking of how something similar could happen with IA. If IA ever died, we as a community could keep it alive. We could vote on regular, new, fan made units and improve and continue the game indefinitely! Cool article too. Never heard of the card game but I love how the players kept it going for so long.

You could have something like 10 fan made candidate deployment cards and easily survey to vote for the top two to add or something.

I'd rather FFG kept putting new stuff out but if they ever stopped...

It's quite possible. They are doing it with Netrunner at the moment, gathering a design and game-keeper group. I play that swccg game still, competitively. It works fine.

I dare say IA is a little tougher because of the minis, but then again, you could probably find other miniatures that are good enough.

Someone just made some custom 4lom and Zuckuss figures in Canada and with the way 3d printing is going i think the figures may not be as difficult as you think. Deaigning new tiles and maps may be more challenging although by mixing maps from all the packs you could make quite a few interesting maps yet. Imagine mixing core jabba and twin shadows map tiles for a super desert map or the same with forest tiles that come with every pack

Actually if I had to propose a way to make this going forever, I would make an app for the skirmish to keep track of events happening on the board and gather data. This way proper algorithms can rebalance the game dynamically on a daily basis. To do that cards must be replaced by the app. The app should basically keep track of players hand and it should also resolve attacks (roll dice and apply modifiers and surges, etc). This way you can add more cards and those will get balanced by themselves after a while.

yeah, 3D printing is the way to go, and app idea sounds good too! Fans could definitely fix old cards too (Biv?!) and make it fun to play rarely played stuff.

Are there images of those figures ????

As someone who has spent too many hours making skirmish fixes, I will likely spend too many hours making an IA 2.0 skirmish ruleset (and deployment cards for existing figures) if IA is no longer supported by FFG.

Haha! I bought them off of that guy from ebay so I can use them to make a custom campaign when IA dies. I kid you not. They're actually the Star Wars minis figures primed in dark grey.

So ya, when it dies, I fully plan to keep playing. I've only played skirmish really, so campaign will be like a new game for me. And I seriously want to make a custom campaign someday and skirmish maps.

I still maintain that this game is the best valued star wars game available.

He primed star wars minis. I bought a set, but I think he still has another for sale. ebay 4-lom imperial assault.

TBH I don't think we have to worry about IA being discontinued. Campaign is very popular and it moves product I'm sure.

Skirmish support is really what we'd be worried about.

Feels a little early still to be planning the game's funeral.

The game is super healthy and selling well if you ask me. The only thing I could think of is that at some point FFG loses the licence to sell it, like what happened with Netrunner. Otherwise, I'm loving the game right now and am super excited for the next wave. I really think map rotation helps keep internets lists at bay, and promotes a healthy meta.

Just to be clear, I don't think IA is in any imminent danger of dying and I'm not planning a funeral. Maybe it came off sounding like that but my main point was have a read of that cool article about fans keeping a SW game alive for many years even after it "died." I actually am looking forward to lots of new stuff coming out (ToL, JR app update etc), but, if the game ever did die (which once again I don't think will happen soon) it could still be alive and thriving for many years if something similar to that SW card game happened.

I'm actually quite happy with where IA is right now... hope that's clear.

Ya same here. I've been told it was going to die for the last two years...by people who don't play the game. I just don't see it. I remember thinking x-wing would die, so I stopped buying after wave 8 (glad I stopped, as she dead now). I decided to go all in on IA. I have no regrets. It's a better value and to me has a more star wars themed game play. I've barely touched campaign but plan to some day.

The same has been done with Star Wars Miniatures, which Wizards of the Coast discontinued back in 2010 or 2011 or something. Immediately when WotC made the announcement that they weren't going to continue the game, some players from the community started working on the first Virtual Set (aka "V-Set")...and now we're at V-Set number 15 or 16 or something. We use pre-existing minis as proxies for the new creations, we get the cards professionally printed on high quality gloss cardstock, etc. It's totally do-able. And the figures really don't present a problem, since there are so many figures to choose from in our collections.

So yes, there are definitely ways to continue IA, if that ever needs to happen. However, I hope that is YEARS in the future! I was just talking with my son in the car today about how there is still Endor and Rogue One to use, as well as lots of content from the new trilogy. And then yes, I want some Separatist/Republic and Old Republic/Sith Assault too!
