HK’s vs weequay’s

By Zagnoroth, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hello, I’m going to be using HK’s at gencon and people keep telling my to run weequa’s instead. Can anyone tell me why they are “better” than HK’s

There are several reasons, including but not limited to:

weequays are a point cheaper(8-7)

they have better traits (Smuggler>>>>droid). On the Lam keeps a weequay alive to attack again

more health. 6 probably gets one shot a lot these days, but 5 does pretty much any time.

Easy access to Hidden helps their attack and keeps them a little more defensible also.

In addition, weequays have a built in range of 2 accuracy and can surge for additional accuracy, meaning a hidden weequay will often hit at least 6 spaces away and many times more, whereas a regular HK is only guaranteed 4 range and has no surges for accuracy. Also the weequay has a surge for +2 damage, and the Weequay has green dice which are more consistent than blue or yellow dice (green has 5/6 sides with 2 symbols, blue has half with 1 symbol and half with 2 symbols, and yellow is i think half of them 1 symbol, 2 with 2 symbols, and 1 with three). Often Weequays aren't the ones taking strain for black market (at least earlier rounds), but the fact that they CAN take the strain is another plus. It can't be understated how important on the lam is, and they also can use stuff like "run for cover" to be defensible. Overall, weequays do more for you more consistently and 2 sets of them are 2 points cheaper than 2 sets of HKs.

1 point cheaper, +1 health, better surge abilities, better accuracy, better trait, and greengreen+hidden with those surge abilities is mathematically superior to HKs attacks in average damage because the green dice only have 1 side out of 6 that has only 1 symbol on it, while blue and yellow have 3/6 sides with a single damage or surge symbol.

The most noticeable difference for me is the range, but they’re pretty much just better all around.

It's funny to think that a lot of people completely dismissed the weequays when they came out and was certain they'd never replace the HKs.

HKs look cooler. Honestly if the elite HKs were 8pts they would be fine even without the shoot through ability. Most of the time the accuracy is not a problem do to the reroll. Health and too many small surges instead of the big surge is the main problem and points are a premium in Mercs. They never should have had the Hunter ability in my opinion

I found the biggest problem is that they don't surge for much either which hurts more because you may end up with more surges than you need. I found they were good with Explosive Armaments, but again you're making a squishy unit more expensive. The biggest strength is getting to re-roll one of yours and their dice. But, weequays are definitely better overall.

I also feel like the weaken on HK’s is key for Han Jin and Vader.

It can't be overstated how much green dice are better than blue and yellow dice too, especially with lots of accuracy buffs and a reroll. With their reroll, green dice are almost always going to have 2 symbols per die, whereas blue and yellow dice are often single symbol and have a 50% chance to reroll into a side with a single symbol. Weequays attacks are much more consistent than HKs.

are you saying that HK's shouldn't have hunter trait because it's kind of in their name

He's probably saying Weequays shouldn't have had the hunter trait. They don't really match that description in the movie at least. More like troopers or guardians.

Exactly. Smugglers should smuggle. Weequay acted as troops or guardians in the movie. We wouldnt have to get bland psuedo fixes like Doubt if the weequays didnt have the Hunter trait

on this we agree, i never liked the Weequays having Hunter, i understand they didn't get trooper because FFG probably wanted it to remain an Imp trait in general.
