Genesys OGL

By PFElton, in Genesys

I saw a thread about this a while back, but is FFG allowing third party content using the Narrative Dice System yet?

I mean, they've never disallowed it. You can make whatever game setting you want. The only thing you can't do is make money off of it, which is what most people think when they talk about OGL.

What @Swordbreaker said. The OGL is associated with 3rd party products for profit . FFG has never shut down fan-made supplements (they're not Palladium!) as long as you don't charge money for it.

I mean, here's a list of the known fan material made, and I'm sure there's some that we've missed! Go forth, create, share. Don't charge monies.

There's rumors and talk and "maybe, maybe not" from the company from time to time. But as of the moment, nothing really. Which is a shame. My 100% spitball prediction is that if it were to come it wouldn't be until after they get a few settings books out, probably one for each of the settings described in the book.

I've complained (pretty loudly) in the past about not having an OGL day 1, but I can see the wisdom of it. The first thing people were going to do with Genesys was make a 'not-DnD' clone, 'not-Netrunner' clone, and a 'not-TwilightImperium' clone. This allows FFG to make official settings books for their own IP without having to compete with or muddy the market with knock-offs. This may be for the best, as it makes people develop innovative products that can answer the question of "why don't I just play RoT instead?"

I hope we eventually get an OGL, this community has made some absolutely fantastic content so far, I'm really interested to see what they could make with an actual budget and return on investment.

This. As an independent developer I would love to use the Narrative Dice System in a for-profit venture.

Where have they shut down third parties?

That's the thing, they won't clarify their stance. Many who would love to make third party content for Genesys won't, because they don't want to put time and money into a product just to get shut down or sued.

There was a freelancer who had some Genesys content behind his Patreon paywall and FFG told him to take it down since you had to pay to access it.

Individuals at FFG gave him an informal okay, and then had to take it back after entitled keyboard warriors got their undies in a bundle. I guess FFG shouldn't trust freelancers they've worked with professionally to not damage the brand more than any random Tom, Richard-Nixon-because-the-short-version-of-this-name-got-censored, and Harry on these and other forums with a self-righteous sense or fairness and appeals to spite.

I've given up thinking we'll find the bottom of the Internet's pettiness.

Not talking about you, c__beck, AFAIK, which I realized might not be obvious after quoting you.

It's not about trust, it's about setting precedent. Once they let one person it opens the door for others. That dilutes the market, and because it is a market centered on their product they want the first crack at it. Just throwing devs and writers at things doesn't always increase production speed, and often risks a quality vs quantity failure.

I've seen a lot of people with the "i would love to make material for genesys" but they leave off the "If i can get paid for it" part. That makes it work. It might be work you enjoy. It might be work that is very beneficial to others. It might be a lot of things, but when cash exchanges hands it changes the equation. We as gamers have seen this with the 3.x DnD fiasco where overnight there was so much garbage thrown up to sell that anything good and decent got lost in the tidal wave. Or just look at the quality control problems Steam has had over the years with asset flips and the like.

With little to no control, there is little to no control over the quality. With poor quality comes a loss of customer trust and retention. Without customer trust the market dries up. I do hope they find a way to solve that problem, as there are a lot of really great fan made supplements and tools currently. But again, once money is changing hands it changes the equation, sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

Anyone who "Would love to make material for genesys" and "For the love of the game" can already do so. If the possibility of not being able to market a product and make money off of that is preventing them. It isn't "for the love of the game" it's because the work doesn't pay enough. And that is fine. But own it for what it is.
