New Player Questions

By Gimgamgoo, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

New Player Questions - from a single Core Set only - Hopefully the game's age means nothing below is a spoiler to anyone.

1. If an Act card has 2 (per player) on it to advance it, can it be advanced by the two players if one has 3 clues and the other has 1 clue? Or, is it needing exactly 2 clues per player.

2. Similar type of question to above. The Ghoul Priest's health is 5 (per player). Does that mean 10 damage in total will kill it, or does it require 5 damage from each person.

3. The Ghoul Priest spawns in the Hallway. If there is a character there already, is it automatically engaged?

4. Depends on the answer to Q3. If the strongest player is in the attic and the weaker player in the Hallway. Will the Ghoul Priest get the weaker person in the same location, or move to get the stronger opponent?

5. Are tokens replaced back in the Chaos Bag once drawn? Or do they stay out till the bag is empty?

Thanks.

Here I go:

1. If an Act card has 2 (per player) on it to advance it, can it be advanced by the two players if one has 3 clues and the other has 1 clue? Yes you can.

2. Similar type of question to above. The Ghoul Priest's health is 5 (per player). Does that mean 10 damage in total will kill it, or does it require 5 damage from each person. 10 in total.

3. The Ghoul Priest spawns in the Hallway. If there is a character there already, is it automatically engaged? Yes.

4. Depends on the answer to Q3. If the strongest player is in the attic and the weaker player in the Hallway. Will the Ghoul Priest get the weaker person in the same location, or move to get the stronger opponent? In this case weaker person.

5. Are tokens replaced back in the Chaos Bag once drawn? Or do they stay out till the bag is empty? They get put back in by the end of the test. There are some cards that break this rule, but not in the core.

Thanks for the answers. That's helped loads.

I've read through the rules, watched the FFG how to play video and had a try at a solo play through.

I think I've got enough knowledge now for a first smooth playthrough with the wife - That is after she's given me harsh words for buying this game, as well as having collected Netrunner and recently started Legend of the Five Rings.

The per player signifier is to calculate the total number needed in any situation(health, clues, etc..), nothing else. It's sole purpose is to adjust difficulty based on number of players.

The Prey signifier is used to break ties only. If one investigator is closer, an enemy will always target the closer investigator regardless of Prey instructions. Only if an enemy has two equally valid targets and you need to make a decision who they go after will Prey come into effect and tell you which one it should target.

For 3, note that there must be a character in the Hallway already, because act 2 requires clues from investigators there.

If a Prey instruction contains the word "only", the enemy only moves toward and engages the described investigator. As far as that enemy is concerned, the other investigators don't exist (until they deliberately engage it).

I would add to 1: Pay attention to the act card requirements. For example, in Act 2a, the clues have to be spent in the hallway. It doesn't matter which investigator has how many clues, the required amount must be spent in the hallway in one payment. Also mind your action count as some scenarios require spending clues as an action.

I have a few questions, as someone who just bought the core set: Is there an order that the expansions should be played in? Does it really matter? Assuming I wanted to play them in the order they came out, what order is that? I've looked over the product page and I'm not entirely sure I can tell what order stuff was released in.

Thanks in advance!

Any order is fine as long as you stay in a cycle.

The order goes (with Mythos Packs)

Dunwich Legacy --> The Miskatonic Museum --> The Essex County Express --> Blood on the Altar --> Undimensioned and Unseen --> Where Doom Awaits --> Lost in Time and Space

Path to Carcosa --> Echoes of the Past --> The Unspeakable Oath --> A Phantom of Truth --> The Pallid Mask --> Black Star Rises --> Dim Carcosa

Forgotten Age --> Threads of Fate --> The Boundary Beyond --> 4 packs that will be released every month through November.

Then you have the standalone and return to the night of the Zealot which all have dropped in the middle of other cycles. I think Night of the Rogarou came out before Dunwich Legacy.

I do recommend reading the Dunwich Horror prior to playing the Dunwich Legacy, although you can play it without doing so.

Just wanted to make sure you understand that there is an assumption you play a cycle in order but each independent cycle can be played in any order.

So say you wanted to start with Dunwich. You should buy the Dunwich box and then each of the Mythos expansions in the order that I listed them above. There are benefits to getting a lot of the Mythos packs at the start as each one contains level zero player cards that you can use to build your starting deck.

Do the expansion boxes (eg Dunwich Legacy) include a playable scenario?

The Dunwich Legacy expansion contains two scenarios that can be played in either order.

To be very clear, all three of the boxed expansions come with two scenarios in them.

I only own The Dunwich Legacy, so I couldn't talk about the other expansions.

If campaigns are not your thing, each mythos pack scenario includes set up instructions for stand alone games. You would be required to own the deluxe expenasion of that particular cycle

So each campaign starts with the deluxe box (the dunwich legacy, the path to carcosa, the forgotten age) regardless of whether or not you chose to play in campaign mode if you wish to play a mythos pack in the respective campaign block as listed above you will need the deluxe box for that cycle as the mythos pack will need the encounter sets from it. In addition if you chose to play in campaign mode the deluxe boxes each include the campaign guide and at the back it will tell you in what order each scenario can be played in, including the mythos packs. Also as has been said, each deluxe pack comes with 2 scenarios to start the campaign as well as all the encounter card sets to be used through out the campaign (not including a few used from the core set) in addition to about 20 ish player cards(2 copies of each), each mythos pack comes with a single scenario and approx 10-15 new player cards (2 copies of each). Reference @Jobu post for the order, the standalones: Curse of the Rouxgarou and Carnevale of Horrors can be played in stand alone mode, in addition you can insert them into your campaign as well, however these scenarios only have the single scenario and a few player cards that are story assets that have to be earned via game play. Labyrinths of Lunacy is standalone mode only. Hopefully this helps
